DUBLIN, July 4 (LSN.ca) – A split in the Church of Ireland will become apparent this week as a delegation from the church speaks to a government hearing on abortion. The Sunday Times reported that a recommendation from the church’s medical ethics committee that abortion be legalized in certain circumstances has been withdrawn after opposition from the church’s hierarchy and membership. Pro-Life Infonet reports that a national Islamic advocacy group has sharply condemned the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a state law banning partial-birth abortions is unconstitutional. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the ruling amounts to legal approval for infanticide, an act specifically prohibited by Islam. In a 54-41 vote the U.S. Senate approved an amendment to a Labour, and Education Appropriations bill Friday that would stop school-based health clinics from giving out abortifacient “emergency contraception” to minors. MELBOURNE, July 4 (LSN.ca) – Australia is embroiled in the abortion debate with a hospital having suspended three senior doctors for having committed a late-term abortion for a woman whose baby had dwarfism. Today results of a survey indicated that 78% of doctors would kill children at 13 weeks gestation if it was discovered that they were dwarfs. However, support for aborting babies with dwarfism at 24 weeks dropped from 78 per cent to 14 per cent. UNITED NATIONS, July 4 (LSN.ca) – United Nations talks defining the rules and definitions of crimes and prosecution for the International Criminal Court came to a close Friday. Negotiations will continue in November. US efforts to ensure that Americans would not be prosecuted by the court were denied. Delegates from over 100 countries reaffirmed that the court would have universal jurisdiction to try individuals from countries which have agreed to the statute and those which have not. Renegade Bishop Pulled as Speaker at Pride Event ROME, July 4 (LSN.ca) – Organizers of World Gay Pride in Rome had scheduled a controversial French bishop to speak at the event. Bishop Jacques Gaillot, who was removed from the Diocese of Evreux, France in 1995 because of his unorthodox public stands, was scheduled to speak on “homosexuality and religion.” However, Gaillot backed out of the appearance after receiving a call from the president of the French bishop’s conference.
