DISTURBING DEVELOPMENTS OVER US CATHOLIC HEALTH DIRECTIVES

WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (LSN.ca) – Catholic bishops in the US were urged by the Vatican to tighten regulations governing Catholic hospitals. This followed after several acquisitions and mergers in the US led to Catholic and Catholic-affiliated hospitals providing sterilization, abortifacient contraception and morning-after pills.* However, the November 15 discussion of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (ERDs) document seems to have weakened the directives rather than strengthened them. Tragically, the Catholic Health Association (CHA) in the US has been at loggerheads with the Vatican over the directives. The CHA, under president and CEO Rev. Michael Place, […]

The All Party Committee report looking at abortion in Ireland was published yesterday. SPUC reports that the 700 page document outlines three options. The first option, favoured by the Fine Gael party, would be to retain the current constitutional and legal situation. The second option, favoured by the Labour party, would be to introduce legislation with the effect of protecting current medical practice [abortions to save the life of the woman] and underpinning the situation since the Supreme Court’s 1992 X-case decision [whereby abortions were allowed when the mother was considered to be at risk of suicide]. POPE TO EUROPE’S LEADERS: RIGHT TO LIFE IS MOST BASIC RIGHT

VATICAN, Nov 6 (LSN.ca) – In an address to delegates to the ministerial conference of the Council of Europe Friday, Pope John Paul II reminded the politicians that “the right to life” is the “most basic” right of all. During his talk he noted the modern problems of separating human rights from the true nature of the human person and the problem of interpreting rights solely from an individualistic perspective, with little consideration of the role of the family as “the fundamental unit of society”. The pope called it a “paradox that, on the one hand, the need to respect […]

London CA member accuses her of “sleazy, backroom double-dealing” LONDON, Ontario Nov 6 (LSN.ca) – LifeSite has rarely encountered such intense hostility directed towards a Canadian Alliance candidate as that which has developed around Nancy Branscombe. The controversy developed during her Oct. 21 failed Peterborough nomination bid and her subsequent Oct. 26 instant win of the London-North-Centre riding. The most severe criticism has come from other Alliance supporters who see her as bringing the worst of old party, power-at-any-cost politics into the Alliance. Nancy Branscombe was not successful as the Reform candidate for Peterborough during the 1997 federal election. In […]

MONTREAL, Nov 6 (LSN.ca) – Rumours that suggested Prime Minister Jean Chretien would make the election about abortion and run a “state vs church” campaign seem to be verified with yet another attack by Chretien on Stockwell Day’s pro-life convictions. Speaking to a Quebec Liberal women’s group he said, “There was a decision in 1988 of the Supreme Court [striking down Canada’s abortion law]. We have had social peace in Canada on the question of abortion,” he added. “Mr. Day is proposing to have a referendum on that. I think I don’t agree. I [don’t] think that the women will […]

The program falsely claims that all CPC’s provide misleading information on abortion. LifeSite does not yet know whether or not the W-F program reveals the names of the CPC’s investigated. Interestingly, a Canadian Press article published today does not, indicating that at least some media personnel are sufficiently fearful about the integrity of the material that they want to avoid potential lawsuits for spreading […]
