CALGARY BISHOP REBUKES CHRETIEN AND CLARK AS “SCANDALOUS”

CALGARY, Feb 26, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Alberta’s Catholic Bishop Fred Henry, surprised pro-lifers today with a column published in the Calgary Sun chastising Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark for their “pro-choice” stance on abortion. Both leaders profess to be Catholic themselves, although, as Bishop Henry noted, “no Catholic can responsibly take a ‘pro-choice’ stand when the ‘choice’ in question involves the taking of innocent human life.” The column came as a surprise because of Bishop Henry’s recent hostility to pro-lifers over the March of Women. He was a strong advocate of Catholic participation in the […]

US NEWS ROUNDUP

* Many people today hope that genetic research will increasingly link behaviour to a person’s genetic make-up rather than to moral choice decision-making. Craig Venter, president of Celera Genomics, which is mapping the human genome, however, recently commented that, “those who are looking for forgiveness of responsibility for their own lives in the genetic code will be very disappointed.” (reported in the Federalist Digest) * Dan Martino is sometimes the only pro-lifer standing outside Florida’s Supreme Court protesting abortion, but he’s been there almost every day since 1989. When asked if he gets discouraged when he’s standing there by himself, […]

NEW DISCOVERY ERODES RATIONALE FOR USING EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS

SCOTLAND, Feb 26, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Those who support the use of embryonic stem cells for research (killing the unborn child in the process) are rapidly losing their justification for continuing this practise. BBC reported Friday that the company which cloned the infamous “Dolly” sheep has announced a new discovery which could make the use of adult stem cells an even more viable alternative than it already is. The American subsidiary of Edinburgh-based PPL Therapeutics has succeeded in converting skin tissue from cows into beating heart cells. This was done by ‘re-winding’ the genetic clock of the skin cells so […]

MAGAZINE CALLS FOR EXCOMMUNICATION OF HEALTH MINISTER ALLAN ROCK

TORONTO, Feb 23, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Catholic Insight magazine, March edition, is calling for the excommunication of federal Health Minister Allan Rock by the Catholic Church. “Politically, Catholics like Rock do as they please,” the magazine says; “it’s about time the Church do as she must.”  The magazine points out that Catholics who directly participate in causing an abortion, are excommunicated automatically. All others commit lesser sins according to the extent and degree of their participation. The latter is called “material cooperation.” Catholic Insight insists that Rock, a Catholic, “has reached the highest degree of material cooperation” since he not […]
