SELECTIVE MEDIA COVERAGE OF KALOPSIS’ ALLIANCE EXIT STORY

OTTAWA, July 11, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Another example of selective mainstream media coverage on the rupture within the Canadian Alliance occurred this week with news reports about Alliance party co-president Ken Kalopsis resigning from the executive committee of the Alliance National Caucus. Media reports gave the impression that Kalposis’ July 9 resignation was another unexpected and serious loss to the Day led Alliance. Almost all reports failed to mention that Kalopsis was about to be voted off the Alliance Executive and that his resignation conveniently pre-empted the action. Kalopsis and wife Nancy Branscombe have been known to be strong Day […]

UNITED NATIONS, July 12, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Speaking yesterday on the occasion of World Population Day, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan made a thinly veiled call for abortion rights while promoting “an integrated approach to… slowing population growth.” Annan appealed to the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development to justify his endorsement of population control, which he tied to reducing poverty and protecting the environment. Annan said that “Among the requirements for achieving these related goals are universal access to …reproductive health care and family planning… Women… are often denied the right to…control their own fertility. Enhancing women’s opportunities […]

WASHINGTON, July 12, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The media has come out as one of the strongest lobbyists in favour of funding research involving the destructive use of human embryos. US NEWS ROUNDUP

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Food and Drug Administration has clamped down on fertility clinics practicing a new technique using DNA from three parents, saying that the government needed to give approval to any procedures that involve human cloning and other forms of genetic engineering. The targeted technique, “ooplasmic transfer,” combines the eggs of two different women and is generally used when an older woman is trying to conceive. New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim McGreevey is demonstrating religious intolerance towards his Republican opponent Bret Schundler. Schundler a pro-life Catholic, is being attacked for his uncompromising pro-life stand. […]

MADISON, Wis., July 11, 2001 (LSN.ca) – On Tuesday the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that a man who owed $25,000 in child support could be ordered not to father anymore children as a condition of probation. AP reports that if David Oakley, who already has had nine children with four women, fails to abide by the condition, he faces 8 years in prison. The decision by the justices was split along gender lines as all three female justices dissented from the ruling saying having children is a basic human right guaranteed by the Constitution.
