HOUGHTON, Michigan, Aug 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Bishop James H. Garland of the Marquette diocese in Michigan wrote to a Houghton local paper earlier this month to express his disappointment at the opening of a Planned Parenthood office in Houghton. LONDON, Aug 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The British Government’s Disability Rights Commission (DRC) has said that a section of Britain’s 1967 Abortion Act discriminates against those with disabilities. The DRC issued a statement Tuesday noting that Section 1(1)d of the act allows abortion at any time during pregnancy if there is a significant risk of the baby being born seriously disabled, while under normal circumstances abortion is not permitted after 24 weeks gestation. VANCOUVER, Aug 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Notorious Canadian abortionist Ellen Wiebe of Vancouver has been experimenting with the pain relief drug fentanyl. In a study published in the July issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (2001;185:103-7), Wiebe reports that the study aimed “to find out whether intravenous fentanyl was effective in reducing the pain of first-trimester abortion.” According to the write-up, pain “reduction was of questionable clinical significance and was less than desired by the women included in the study.” Last month LifeSite reported that Weibe was experimenting with aromatherapy to reduce anxiety in women undergoing abortions. OTTAWA, Aug 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality (Aug 17, 2001) reports that the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and human papillomavirus are soaring, with teens 15-19 suffering the highest infection rates. Among teenage girls, the chlamydia rate is 1,200 per 100,000, and the rate is 212 per 100,000 for teenage boys, or six times the rate among the general population. MODENA, Italy, Aug 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A study conducted in Italy has found that an annual peak in elective abortions in summer coincides with an annual peak in female suicides. “The almost complete similarity of the seasonal rhythm of female suicides and that of voluntary abortion furnishes valid support for a strong relationship between the two,” say researchers Angelo Cagnacci and Annibale Volpe at the University of Modena.
