LIFESITE NEWSBYTES

THE GREAT CANADIAN DICTATORSHIP A book by Globe and Mail columnist Jeffrey Simpson due out in October catalogues the centralization of power in Canada with the Prime Minister and his selected minions. Simpson, saying Chretien wields far more power than a U.S. president, even compares the prime minister to 17th century French King Louis XIV, who was known as the Sun King and who liked to declare “L’etat, c’est moi” (I am the state).  https://home-news.excite.ca/news/r/010821/10/news-canada-dictatorship-col A study has found that breastfeeding a baby for less than three months after birth may negatively affect a child’s intelligence.  https://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/health/newsid_1501000/1501906.stm COMPUTER GAMES HARM […]

UK GOV’TS DISABILITY COMMISSION SAYS ABORTION LAW DISCRIMINATORY

LONDON, Aug 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The British Government’s Disability Rights Commission (DRC) has said that a section of Britain’s 1967 Abortion Act discriminates against those with disabilities. The DRC issued a statement Tuesday noting that Section 1(1)d of the act allows abortion at any time during pregnancy if there is a significant risk of the baby being born seriously disabled, while under normal circumstances abortion is not permitted after 24 weeks gestation. The DRC statement said: “The Section is offensive to many people; it reinforces negative stereotypes of disability and there is substantial support for the view that to […]

STUDY SUGGESTS DECISION TO ABORT IS LINKED TO DEPRESSION

MODENA, Italy, Aug 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A study conducted in Italy has found that an annual peak in elective abortions in summer coincides with an annual peak in female suicides. “The almost complete similarity of the seasonal rhythm of female suicides and that of voluntary abortion furnishes valid support for a strong relationship between the two,” say researchers Angelo Cagnacci and Annibale Volpe at the University of Modena. The study, published in the current issue of the journal Human Reproduction, looked at data on Italian women between 1995 and 1998, following over 500,000 abortions. The results showed a “seasonal […]
