POPE’S FIRST INTERNET DOCUMENT CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF THE UNBORN

VATICAN CITY, November 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Pope John Paul II included a call for the defence of the unborn in the first document he has ever personally posted on the Internet. The pro-life message came in a document that summed up the themes of a synod of bishops from Oceania held in the Vatican in 1998. The Pope wrote: “In the more secularized and affluent societies of Oceania, the right to life is the one most under threat. There is a profound contradiction in this, for these are often societies which speak insistently about human rights while denying the […]

Policy Worse Than Feared OTTAWA, November 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Stockwell Day, Leader of the Opposition, rebuked the recently revised military policy banning military chaplains from using specifically Christian references in public worship services. In comments in the House of Commons Wednesday, the Canadian Alliance leader called the new policy “political correctness gone crazy.” He explained that “it is not the role of government to promote a particular religion nor is it the role of government to stand against a particular religion.” Day said, “This continues a disturbing trend we saw at the Swissair memorial, where the government said the […]

Yesterday’s Globe and Mail reports, “Anti-abortion groups, which can organize large numbers of people, were credited with a large role in helping Stockwell Day win the Canadian Alliance leadership.” Again on November 17 the Globe explained why the media were focusing on abortion, and questioning all Conservative leadership candidates on the issue. “This issue has importance in the Tory leadership race because some of the groups that could deliver large numbers […]

EVES’ HENCHMEN THREATEN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL TUITION TAX CREDIT

TORONTO, November 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Ontario MPPs who have declared their support for Ernie Eves in the Ontario Conservative leadership race, are attacking the Equity in Education Tax Credit designed to assist parents who send their children to independent schools. These families often bear a considerable financial burden for this choice while saving taxpayers thousands of dollars per pupil who would otherwise have been an expense to the public system. In addition to providing real education choices to families, it is also argued that private schools provide much-needed competition to the monolithic public system and its powerful teachers’ unions. After being questioned on the issue by the media Witmer said, “I believe it is up to each individual, and I respect the decision that each woman will make in this regard.” Liberal MPP George Smitherman attempted to paint Witmer as wavering on abortion as he put out a press release claiming “Elizabeth Witmer wants to kick-start a divisive, province-wide debate on abortion.” Smitherman is stretching the truth since such a […]

ONTARIO RETAINS BAN ON PEDOPHILIA FILM AFTER APPEAL

TORONTO, November 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) – An Ontario Film Review Board (OFRB) ban on Fat Girl, a controversial film screened at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival has survived an appeal by the film’s distributors backed by leading Canadian filmmakers. The ban was placed on the film since the distributors refuse to cut scenes showing a 13-year-old and 15-year-old in nude sex scenes. The ruling by an expanded panel of the board was 3-2 against the film, with the two dissenters taking the unprecedented step of filing public dissents. JUDGE EXTENDS BLOCK OF ATTORNEY GENERAL’S MOVE AGAINST OREGON ASSISTED SUICIDE A federal judge extended a court order Tuesday that blocks an attempt by Attorney General John Ashcroft to dismantle Oregon’s one-of-a-kind law allowing physician-assisted suicides. U.S. District Judge Robert Jones extended his Nov. 8 temporary restraining order and gave the state and the Justice Department up to five months to prepare their arguments. The judge stressed that his order “nullifies giving any legal effect’’ to Ashcroft’s directive—in other words, doctors should not fear legal repercussions if they follow the Oregon law.  https://library.northernlight.com/EB20011121310000021.html?cb=0&dx=1006&sc=0#doc COURT UPHOLDS KEVORKIAN CONVICTION The Michigan Court […]
