US SUPREME COURT WEAKENS LAW AGAINST CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

WASHINGTON, April 17, 2002 (LSN.ca) – On Tuesday the US Supreme Court struck down two provisions of a law against child pornography. Two sections of the 1996 Child Pornography Prevention Act, one banning computer-generated “virtual child pornography” and another prohibiting sexually explicit images promoted as involving minors, were declared unconstitutional since they were found to be overly broad and thus hampering free speech. The votes on striking down the provisions were 7-2 on the first and 6-3 on the second. Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Justice Antonin Scalia dissented. Attorney General John Ashcroft was outraged by the decision and moved […]

PORTLAND, April 17, 2002 (LSN.ca) – U.S. District Judge Robert Jones ruled today that the US Justice Department may not use its authority over the federal Controlled Substances Act to quash Oregon’s practice of legal physician-assisted suicide. Judge Jones slammed Attorney General John Ashcroft accusing him of attempting to “stifle an ongoing, earnest and profound debate in the various states concerning physician-assisted suicide.”“The citizens of Oregon, through their democratic initiative process, have chosen to resolve the moral, legal and ethical debate on physician-assisted suicide for themselves by voting – not once, but twice – in favor of the Oregon act,” […]

CANADIAN ALLIANCE CONVENTION DISCUSSES STEM CELL POLICY

EDMONTON, April 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A motion at the Canadian Alliance National Convention held April 4-6 discussed the current major controversy of stem cell research. Alliance MP Jason Kenney spoke advocating a ban on destructive research on human embryos. Kenney noted that such research is unethical since it destroys human life and that considering the amazing results of adult stem cell research, experimentation on human embryos cannot be excused. Prior to an amendment which would have suggested a moratorium on such research rather than a ban, one of the delegates to the meeting asked that the motion be tabled. […]

Supremacy of Parliament replaced With Supremacy of the Charter OTTAWA, April 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Canadians are currently being inundated with media propaganda celebrating 20 years of implementation of Pierre Trudeau’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
