CHINESE COUPLE GETS MAXIMUM SENTENCE FOR HAVING A THIRD CHILD

BEIJING, People’s Republic of China, September 11, 2002 (LSN.ca) – A couple in eastern China has been fined $51,000 (six times their annual income) for having a third child in violation Beijing’s one-child policy—in what is being described as a “record” warning to others.  Mr. and Mrs. Zhang (only their surname is available) already have a son and a daughter. Reforms that took effect on Sept. 1 allow certain sectors of society, particularly in rural areas, to have a second child if the firstborn is a girl. Ethnic minorities, too, may have two or even three children because of their […]

SWISS ABANDON ALOOFNESS, JOIN UNITED NATIONS

GENEVA, September 10, 2002 (LSN.ca) – One of the last genuinely democratic hold-outs against liberal internationalist ideology has given up. Switzerland, where 75% of an earlier generation of voters rejected UN membership in a 1986 plebiscite, today became the 190th member of the United Nations. Unlike most people, however, the Swiss were able to approve the capitulation in another plebiscite in March, by a vote of 55 percent to 45.  Switzerland’s membership changes little in practice, but is of major symbolic importance since it marks the abandonment of the traditional robust sense of independence uniquely cherished by the Swiss for […]

LIFESITE INSPIRATION

The struggle to defend life and family can frequently be overwhelming for those involved with the various organizations.  Most are quite ordinary, family people who often wonder how it is that they became so involved in this. They often ask, “Why don’t others see what I see?” And also, “how much longer can this go on?”  Exhaustion is common and the temptation to become discouraged frequent. Most disheartening can be active opposition or lack of any useful support from those we would most expect to be on our side.  As well, there seems to be a perpetual shortage of dedicated, […]
