Catholic Priest Testifies Against Massachusetts Bill Defining Marriage As Only Between Man and Woman

BOSTON, May 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In his May 16 magazine e-letter, Crisis magazine editor Deal Hudson comments on the surprising testimony of Rev. James F. Keenan, S.J opposing Massachusetts constitutional amendment H.3190 which defines marriage as only between a man and a woman.  Hudson reports that Fr. Keenan,  a professor of moral theology at Western Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, very selectively quoted Catholic documents on homosexuality in his April 28 presentation to a Massachusetts judicial committee.  Keenan quoted Catholic Catechism section 2358 which states, “Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided”.  Hudson notes […]

Florida Judge Orders Abortion Of Six-Month Unborn Baby

MIAMI, May 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Florida judge has ruled that the abortion of an unborn child of a disabled rape victim can proceed, on grounds that the pregnancy could be “life-threatening” to the mother. The child is at 23 weeks gestation—almost 6 months. Late-term abortions are widely acknowledged to be more dangerous for mothers and certainly riskier than childbirth.  Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Arthur Rothenberg “authorized” doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital not only to abort the 6-month unborn child, but to sterilize the young woman, who is severely handicapped but was raped more than once. “I’m glad she won’t […]

Texas House Votes To Define Embryo As A Person

100-1 in support of a Senate bill that under Texas law, life begins at fertilization. The bill defines “an unborn child at every state of gestation from fertilization until birth” as an individual, says a report from the Austin American Statesman.  So called “legal abortions” are exempted from the law. But the law provides for the protection of an unborn child from being killed or injured—and is thus seen as a significant step toward protecting at least some of the unborn.  For local coverage:  https://www.statesman.com/legislature/content/coxnet/texas/legislature/0503/0527fetus.html

‘United Europe’ Constitution Excludes God, Faith

BRUSSELS, May 26, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A draft constitution for a “United Europe” was launched today—one that provides for an elected super-president and a single “foreign minister.” Significantly, the Constitution commits member states to “unreservedly” support a common foreign policy and a legally-binding Charter of Fundamental Rights.  British Conservatives condemned the document. “By supporting incorporation, the Labour Party is signing away Britain’s national interests as the Charter will grossly undermine Britain’s capabilities in the fields of social, employment and cultural policy,” said Timothy Kirkhope, Tory MEP and a Conservative Representative on the Convention. He said: “The British Government is pulling […]

U.S. Senate Rejects Abortion On Military Bases

WASHINGTON, May 26, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The United States Senate overwhelmingly approved a $400 billion defense bill by 98 to 1. Significantly, both the House and Senate narrowly defeated amendments that would have allowed enlisted women to have abortions on military bases, even if they paid for their baby’s abortion themselves. Feminists have long pushed for legitimization of abortions on military bases, a symbolic issue as women have been performing an increasing number of functions in the U.S. military. Last year, the then-Democrat controlled Senate voted to allow abortions on bases but which is now invalidated.  For newswire coverage:  https://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20030522/pl_afp/us_congress_defense_030522234659 […]
