Catholic Priest Testifies Against Massachusetts Bill Defining Marriage As Only Between Man and Woman

BOSTON, May 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In his May 16 magazine e-letter, Crisis magazine editor Deal Hudson comments on the surprising testimony of Rev. James F. Keenan, S.J opposing Massachusetts constitutional amendment H.3190 which defines marriage as only between a man and a woman.  Hudson reports that Fr. Keenan,  a professor of moral theology at Western Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, very selectively quoted Catholic documents on homosexuality in his April 28 presentation to a Massachusetts judicial committee.  Keenan quoted Catholic Catechism section 2358 which states, “Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided”.  Hudson notes […]

Texas House Votes To Define Embryo As A Person

100-1 in support of a Senate bill that under Texas law, life begins at fertilization. The bill defines “an unborn child at every state of gestation from fertilization until birth” as an individual, says a report from the Austin American Statesman.  So called “legal abortions” are exempted from the law. But the law provides for the protection of an unborn child from being killed or injured—and is thus seen as a significant step toward protecting at least some of the unborn.  For local coverage:  https://www.statesman.com/legislature/content/coxnet/texas/legislature/0503/0527fetus.html

Florida Judge Orders Abortion Of Six-Month Unborn Baby

MIAMI, May 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Florida judge has ruled that the abortion of an unborn child of a disabled rape victim can proceed, on grounds that the pregnancy could be “life-threatening” to the mother. The child is at 23 weeks gestation—almost 6 months. Late-term abortions are widely acknowledged to be more dangerous for mothers and certainly riskier than childbirth.  Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Arthur Rothenberg “authorized” doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital not only to abort the 6-month unborn child, but to sterilize the young woman, who is severely handicapped but was raped more than once. “I’m glad she won’t […]

Courts Have No Jurisdiction Over Pregnant Woman, Judge Says

DENVER, May 26, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Colorado Court of Appeals has ruled that the state’s courts have no jurisdiction over a woman’s decisions or actions respecting an unborn child in her womb—even if the woman knowingly uses harmful drugs. The ruling upheld an earlier decision that dismissed Fremont county’s neglect case against a pregnant woman who was taking methamphetamine.  The county had filed a “dependency and neglect petition” in an effort to protect the health of the unborn child. It was worded to say that the child “resided” with the mother, and described the baby as dependent and subject […]
