Federal Judge Thwarts Mississippi Law Illegalising Abortion after 13 Weeks

JACKSON, July 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A federal judge overturned Friday a new Mississippi law that would have made abortions performed after 13 weeks gestation illegal. The new legislation made abortions illegal after 13 weeks except when committed at hospitals or ambulatory surgical clinics—neither of which perform abortions in the state.  U.S. District Judge Tom S. Lee upheld a temporary injunction issued on July 2, after one of the two state abortuaries, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, challenged the law that came into effect July 1. The Jackson Women’s Health Organization is trying to attain the status of a ambulatory […]

Priest to Deliver Invocation to DNC in Boston- Archbishop Planned to be Out of Town

BOSTON, July 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Paulist priest who regularly gives Kerry communion will give the opening blessing to the Democratic National Convention. Ardis, director of the Paulist Center, will be giving an ‘invocation,’ to the delegates. Ardis has made himself a central figure in the public row over the reception of communion for publicly pro-abortion Catholics. Kerry and his wife, who live nearby, attend services at the Paulist Center in Boston. Ardis said that he had received the sanction […]

France to Boost Payment for Abortions by 29%; Allows RU-486 at Home

PARIS, July 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) –  France’s Health Ministry announced Friday that the government would increase payments for individual abortions by 29%.  In addition, the measure signed by Health Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy allows for the abortion drug RU-486 to be doled out by family physicians rather than in hospitals only, thus making for home abortions with the deadly drug.  The action comes in response to lobbying by pro-abortion groups which complained that private abortuaries would close since abortion in not profitable enough.  See local coverage (in French only):  https://www.leparisien.fr/home/info/vivremieux/article.htm?articleid=241090957 https://actu.voila.fr/Depeche/depeche_sante_040723143147.wjmgcm4s.html   jhw

Florida Court Holds There Is No Right to Transsexual Marriage

LAKELAND, July 23, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Today, Florida’s Second District Court of Appeals issued a unanimous opinion holding that Florida does not recognize transsexual marriage. Liberty Counsel represented Linda Kantaras in her appeal of an 809-page ruling issued by lower court Judge O’Brien in Pasco County, Florida, which held that gender was primarily a state of mind. The lower court ruled that “Michael” Kantaras (formerly known as Margo) (“MK”), who was born female, desires to be a man and therefore, the “marriage” between MK and Linda did not violate Florida’s Defense of Marriage Act, which limits marriage to only one […]

Federal Appeals Court Backs Florida Ban on Homosexual Adoption

ORLANDO, July 23, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, sitting as a full court of twelve judges, refused yesterday to reverse its earlier opinion upholding Florida’s ban on same-sex adoptions. The Eleventh Circuit’s earlier opinion, which remains in effect as a result of today’s decision, holds that the Florida legislature properly made a policy judgment that it is not in the best interests of its displaced children to be adopted by individuals who engage in current, voluntary homosexual activity. The Court stated that, “[W]e have found nothing in the Constitution that forbids this policy judgment. Thus, any […]

U.S. House Passes Measure Ensuring States not Forced to Recognize Homosexual ‘Marriage’

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Yesterday the Marriage Protection Act, passed the House by a vote of 233-194. The Marriage Protection Act is designed to remove from all federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the authority to force states to recognize homosexual ‘marriages’ from other jurisdictions.  Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family commented on the passage saying, “While this legislation will not protect marriage across the nation, it will prevent unelected rogue judges in federal courts from overturning the will of the people.”  He added, “Before the institution of marriage is fully out of reach of […]

Pharmaceutical tries again for FDA Approval of Morning After Pill Without Prescription

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – This May, the Food and Drug Administration rejected nonprescription sales of emergency contraception, in the midst of controversy. Now the manufacturer of the abortifacient drug is again pressuring the US government to allow its sale without a prescription. The FDA decision left a loophole when they said they might reconsider if the company, Barr Pharmaceuticals, could show some way of guaranteeing that the drug will only be sold without prescription to girls and women over 16. In their letter to Barr, the FDA said that there would have to be some means of selling […]

Reality Show to Feature 1000 Men Competing to Impregnate Woman without Sex

LONDON, July 23, 2004 (LifeSitenews.com) – A proposed television reality show has pushed the boundaries of offence by offering a program in which a thousand men compete for the chance to impregnate a woman by IVF. It is unlikely that the production company, Brighter Pictures, will find a market in the UK; a spokesman for the BBC has already said, “It is absolutely not for the BBC.” In its coverage of the intended program, called Make Me A Mum, The Daily Mail has called the idea “sick” and “depraved.” The idea has been greeted with public expressions of revulsion from […]
