Vatican Cardinal: Damage to the Church from the Dissent on Paul VI Contraception Doc Continues Today

By John-Henry Westen VATICAN, July 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Today, on the 40th anniversary of the signing of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae (HV), one of the highest ranking Americans in the Vatican has written an eye-opening and deeply personal retrospective on the world-shaking events which took place in the wake of the document’s publication.  The deadliest thing to hit the Catholic in the last 40 years, he says, was not the encyclical which reiterated the Church’s stand against contraception – but the dissent from it.  Cardinal James F. Stafford, Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary – the head […]

Lawsuit: Wayne State University Denied Funds, Access to Pro-life Student Group

DETROIT, MI, July 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Alliance Defense Fund attorneys filed suit Wednesday after officials of Wayne State University refused to allow a pro-life student group the same access to student fees and facilities that other student groups have. “Student groups shouldn’t be discriminated against for their beliefs,” said ADF Litigation Staff Counsel Joseph Martins.  “Access for these groups to funding and facilities must be provided without regard to the group’s viewpoint.  When a public university enforces a viewpoint-discriminatory policy, the school violates the Constitution.” The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the school’s student fee policy, which precludes student […]

Letter to the Editor for Friday, July 25, 2008

Dear Editor, Order of Canada recipients who renounce their award are twice blessed. Initially they were honoured for a contribution to the country and then they are honoured again by refusing to be associated with a serial killer. Ironically, when they return the snowflake they prove how much they deserved it in the first place. German Government must Recognise “Sex-Change” of Married “Transsexuals”

By Hilary White KARLSRUHE, Germany, July 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A German high court has ruled that those who have undergone “gender reassignment” therapy can now change their legal name and sex while they are still in legal marriages. Previously, the law only allowed the recognition of “sex-changes” if the person was unmarried. Married “transsexuals” who wanted to change their designations on birth certificates and other official documentation had to first obtain a divorce.   The case was brought by a man, not named in the press, who underwent “sex-change” surgery in 2002, but who says he did not want to […]

By Thaddeus M. Baklinski OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A statement from the Monarchist League of Canada regarding the appointment of Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada has led one officer of the League to resign his membership after he was dismissed from his position of Niagara Regional Chair. Calvin Arnt, of St. Catherines, Ontario, objected to the Monarchist League issuing the statement which, though cautiously worded, seemed to be an endorsement of Morgentaler’s appointment to the Order of Canada. The statement quoted the citation accompanying the announcement of Dr. Morgentaler’s appointment: “For his commitment to increased […]

Humanae Vitae

Honored Brothers and Dear Sons, Health and Apostolic Benediction. The transmission of human life is a most serious role in which married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator. It has always been a source of great joy to them, even though it sometimes entails many difficulties and hardships. The fulfillment of this duty has always posed problems to the conscience of married people, but the recent course of human society and the concomitant changes have provoked new questions. The Church cannot ignore these questions, for they concern matters intimately connected with the life and happiness of human […]

Appeals Court Approves City Council Ban on Prayer ‘In Jesus’ Name’

WASHINGTON, July 24, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals today ruled that the city council of Fredericksburg, Virginia had proper authority to require “non-sectarian” prayer content and exclude council-member Rev. Hashmel Turner from the prayer rotation because he prayed “in Jesus’ name.” Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, writing the decision, said: “The restriction that prayers be nonsectarian in nature is designed to make the prayers accessible to people who come from a variety of backgrounds, not to exclude or disparage a particular faith.” Ironically, she admitted Turner was excluded from participating solely because of the […]
