Diplomatic crisis: Chinese pro-life dissident flees to US Embassy – What will Obama do?

It was the top story on Drudge yesterday morning and is making world headlines today. Word has come out that Chinese pro-life dissident Chen Guangcheng made a daring escape under the cloak of darkness on April 22 to the U.S. embassy in Beijing, where he is now holed up. Chen was previously imprisoned for four years and was currently under house arrest for exposing China's forced sterilization and abortion atrocities. The renewed attention to China's forced one-child policy is certainly an embarrassment to its government. Recall last December actor Christian Bale also brought attention to Chen after being blocked by […]

Nine lawsuits filed against Obama’s mandate: A brief rundown of the arguments

There are now nine lawsuits, including one brought by Priests for Life, which have been filed in federal district courts around the country challenging the Obama administration’s HHS mandate that requires employers to provide coverage for activities that many of them believe people should not do. There is value to having multiple lawsuits, because, having been introduced in different judicial jurisdictions around the country, some may be victorious and others not, hence setting up a federal conflict that the Supreme Court is more likely to address. There are similarities and differences in the legal arguments of the nine lawsuits. First […]

Indeed, the PVS diagnosis was used as one of the deciding factors in whether my sister should live or die. It was the core catalyst in the court ordering the removal of Terri’s food and water. How can we achieve ‘common ground’ if pro-aborts believe the fetus is a ‘parasite’?

Leftist activists speak a lot about the need to achieve “common ground” with their ideological foes. In the abortion debate abortion proponents will often say that they want to make abortion “safe, legal, and rare,” and will point out that even if we can’t all agree on the “legal” part, then we can at least agree on “rare.” Maybe we can’t agree on the ultimate legality of abortion, but at least we can work to “reduce the need” for it, they say. It all sounds good in theory: until the rubber hits the road, and pro-abortion activists launch an all-out […]

Toronto Pride’s pressure on Rob Ford already ramping up

When Toronto mayor Rob Ford skipped Toronto’s Gay Pride Parade last June, he was excoriated by the event’s organizers and the city’s media elites, humiliated by marchers bearing his effigy, and denounced by speakers. Nice way to make someone feel welcome, eh? Yet here they are inviting him back again for the 2012 parade. And like last year he’s waffling, at least publicly. Last year, Ford dissociated himself from the 10-day long festivities by not attending any of the events, and he skipped the parade itself by offering the excuse of a long-held family tradition of spending Canada Day weekend […]

US Bishops: Bloggers play ‘critical role’ in defending the Church

Relations between Catholic bloggers and Church officials have at times been quite strained as the new media has developed in the last couple years. Church leaders have been angered by the penchant of many bloggers to call them out on their failures to expound and defend controversial Catholic teachings on moral issues like contraception, homosexuality, and abortion. The difficulties got to the point that last year the Vatican convened a special conference for bloggers to try to build bridges and […]
