Huge Los Angeles Religious Ed. Congress Again Features Gay-Promoting Priests, Dissenters

Huge Los Angeles Religious Ed. Congress Again Features Gay-Promoting Priests, Dissenters by LifeSiteNews.com By Hilary White LOS ANGELES, February 27, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – March 1-4, the Los Angeles Catholic archdiocese is hosting its annual Religious Education Congress, the largest such event in the US and one that has for years drawn criticism from Catholics around the world. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the weekend Congress is regularly picketed by Catholics concerned that the Congress draws heavily for speakers from the ranks of well-known dissenters from Catholic teaching, especially on matters of sexual morality. As many as 10,000 young […]

Cardinal Mahony’s Cathedral Guards Remove and Threaten Pro-life Youth During Honours for Pro-abort M by LifeSiteNews.com LOS ANGELES, July 5, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Faithful Catholics were outraged last week, when a group of young pro-life Catholics were removed and threatened with arrest at the Los Angeles Cathedral where notoriously liberal Roger Cardinal Mahony was “celebrating” a pro-abortion politician. On July 1, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was holding inauguration ceremonies for Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor-elect of Los Angeles, who is pro-abortion and yet claims to be Catholic. Court: No Opt-out of Homosexual Indoctrination in Class for Massachusetts Parents

Court: No Opt-out of Homosexual Indoctrination in Class for Massachusetts Parents by LifeSiteNews.com By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman BOSTON, MA, February 4, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A federal appeals court panel has upheld a Massachusetts policy of indoctrinating elementary school students with pro-homosexual attitudes without their parents consent. The three judge panel ruled that a lower court decision was correct when it denied parents the right to remove their children from such classes, while admitting that the purpose of the literature to which their children were being exposed was to influence children to “tolerate” gay marriage. “It is a fair inference that […]

UK Catholic Aid Agency Promotes Condoms for AIDS

UK Catholic Aid Agency Promotes Condoms for AIDS by LifeSiteNews.com September 28, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Now that the homosexual crisis in the Catholic Church has become public, it is becoming apparent that it has affected not only parishes and dioceses but organizations that control Catholic charitable efforts as well. In the UK, the official aid agency associated with the Catholic bishops’ conference, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), has come under scrutiny for its endorsement of the use of condoms, in contravention of Catholic moral teaching, for the prevention of AIDS. Belgian doctors looking for disabled patients to be euthanized, donate organs

It’s sackcloth and ashes time.  Belgium is really gearing up its euthanasia followed by organ harvesting regime–and apparently the transplant medical community has no moral qualms. In fact, it has become so morally ho-hum, that it was the subject of discussion at the 21st European Conference on General Thoracic Surgery held in the UK in May. It’s all just peachy keen. From the Abstract (0-099) of “Lung Transplantation with Grafts Recovered From Euthanasia Donors: January 2007 and December 2012, 47/350 (13.4%) patients received pulmonary grafts from controlled DCDs [donation after cardiac death], including 6 (1.7%) after euthanasia in accordance with state legislation and […]

Saving the 1%: Pro-life bills lose the rape/incest exception

Set aside the spin and snarkiness, and the August 27 New Republic article, “Pro-lifers aren’t even trying to make abortion restrictions sound nice anymore,” contains exciting news:     The year 2011 was “The Year of Abortion Restrictions,” when states enacted more new laws narrowing abortion rights than in any other year since Roe v. Wade….     The era of warm and fuzzy-sounding abortion laws, though, may be behind us. The success they saw in 2011, and 2012 – another unprecedented year for abortion restrictions – have galvanized pro-lifers to undo a set of rights that they had previously left well […]

Slate writer: You are a bad person for keeping your child out of public schools

August 30, 2013 (Acton Institute) – However misguided their aims, there was one a time when progressives worked to protect the welfare and improve the lot of the individual. Today, the goal of many progressives is to protect the welfare and improve the lot of public bureaucracies. A prime — and stunningly inane — example of this tendency is found Allison Benedikt’s “manifesto” in Slate titled, “If You Send Your Kid to Private School, You Are a Bad Person“: You are a bad person if you send your children to private school. Not bad like murderer bad—but bad like ruining-one-of-our-nation’s-most-essential-institutions-in-order-to-get-what’s-best-for-your-kid bad. So, pretty bad. I […]

Two weeks ago, after I testified at a committee hearing, a female Democrat from Pontiac, MI asked to be added as a sponsor! It was unexpected and we were all pleased. However, the rest of the Democrats in the County Commission were very upset by this resolution and so, she was a no-show today so that she wouldn’t be in a position of having to vote against her caucus. Upon my arrival, I was immediately told by the […]

‘How to convince a girl to get an abortion’: the article you wish was satire, but isn’t

When a colleague sent me an article titled How To Convince A Girl To Get An Abortion, I was pretty sure it was satire. I mean, abortion activists have been increasingly less apologetic about their penchant for feticide, academics have been kowtowing to the idea of “forced fatherhood,” and “abortion contracts” may become “a thing,” but seriously? Surely no guy is willing to brazenly confess what I routinely accuse them of: That they are quite simply willing to satiate their sexual appetites regardless of who gets killed in the process. Well, no longer. A writer for the ironically titled website Return of Kings is willing to come out waving his […]

Fetuses remember! Proof of fetal ‘personhood?’

I reject personhood theory that requires an organism to have certain conscious capacities to attain moral value. I believe that being human is the primary question. But what are personhood theorists to make of a new study demonstrating that fetuses hear words in the womb–and what’s more, remember them? From the AAAS story: Be careful what you say around a pregnant woman. As a fetus grows inside a mother’s belly, it can hear sounds from the outside world—and can understand them well enough to retain memories of them after birth, according to new research. Prior studies of babies showed that they […]

Only 15 percent found abortion morally acceptable and 23 percent felt it was not a moral issue. Religion was a strong predictor of abortion attitudes. White Evangelicals were the religious group most opposed to abortion — with 75 percent indicating they found abortion immoral. Catholics were also statistically more likely to consider abortion immoral. Refuting the false claim that babies don’t survive abortions

RH Reality Check’s Andrea Grimes wrote a piece last week deeming it a “myth” that babies survive abortions: Gosnell was, in fact, a rogue provider, and that there is no evidence of a pattern of infants being “born alive” after an abortion, much less of doctors killing infants in those circumstances…. [T]his notion – that there are multiple cases of fetuses surviving an abortion, only to be killed by a doctor – is a confection of the anti-choice camp, designed to replace fact-based arguments with the lowest form of fear-mongering…. Canada.com reported Ambrose to have said: “All of us think about the issue because we have elderly grandparents and elderly parents, and it’s on the minds of many because Quebec has introduced their legislation,” The Calgary Herald reported Ambrose as saying: “This is an issue that is very emotional for a lot of people — […]

Over-the-Counter Abortion Pills Lead to Menstrual Complications

Over-the-Counter Abortion Pills Lead to Menstrual Complications by LifeSiteNews.com By Patrick B. Craine August 4, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Unsupervised, over-the-counter use of ’emergency’ contraceptive and abortive pills is leading to menstrual problems, reports The Times of India. The paper reports that gynaecologists are encountering increased incidents of menstrual problems among young women who are arbitrarily and repeatedly using these pills as regular forms of contraception. “They check dosage on the internet, do their own calculations. Not understanding the consequences, they land up with incomplete abortions. They are scared about the uncontrollable bleeding, or not getting their periods,” said Dr. Shilpi […]

Abortion Pill not ‘Safe’ Despite Media Spin – Study Suggests Pill as Dangerous As Surgical Abortion by LifeSiteNews.com WASHINGTON, August 16, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Misleading conclusions are being drawn in news stories based on a study that has indicated that the RU486 abortion drug is no more dangerous than surgical abortions. Misleading major media headlines include: Time magazine’s “Study Finds Abortion Pill Safe,” the Chicago Tribune’s “Study: Abortion Pill Doesn’t Increase Risks” and the New York Post’s “Abortion Pill Gets all Clear.” “Reporters are drawing the erroneous conclusion that this study means RU486 is completely safe. Activist thrilled aborting mothers can return home to tuck in their other children

Over at “Bill to allow non-physicians to perform certain first-trimester abortions advancing in California,” I talked about the “progress” pro-abortionists are making in “improving abortion access.” In this case they are not talking about so-called “webcam abortions,” but a bill–AB 154–which would hugely increase the range of non-physicians allowed to do a first-trimester “aspiration abortion.” As I took my latest look at the bill, I ran across a post by Renee Bracey Sherman (described as an “Abortion Access Activist”) at rhrealitycheck.org. There’s a lot of preface all to make the point how difficult it supposedly is to access abortion, a […]

Poor Planned Parenthood against those evil, greedy whistleblowers

Poor Planned Parenthood, with its piddly one billion dollar annual income. It’s just no match for evil, greedy whistleblowers, at least according to pro-abort “reporter” Carolyn Jones at The Guardian: Whistleblowers are the good guys, right? They cry foul on charlatans and overreaching governments. But what if your urge to disclose is lubricated by the promise of a whopping pile of cash? What if powerful lobby groups are standing by to give you first-rate legal representation? And what if your inside knowledge relates to one of America’s most bitter cultural conflicts? Well, if the prospect of a hefty legal settlement helps persuade […]

Killing the blessings

Every once in a while, I read something that surprises me with its impact. On Tuesday, I stumbled across an article posted on the “Gender Focus” website just a few minutes before—the opening sentence was: “This afternoon I had an abortion.” The word “abortion” doesn’t lose its power when you see what it looks like every day, and when the focus of your week is exposing the public to literature depicting what the Toronto Star called “bloodied, tiny bodies” a few days ago. It’s a word that hides, not reveals. It represents the passing of a human being, forced from […]

Australia Greens announce plan to legalize euthanasia

The Australian Greens announced today their intention of legalizing euthanasia, if elected, in the upcoming federal election. A one-sided article that was published in the Australian Times stated: Greens Senator Richard Di Natale outlined the plan earlier today at a press conference in Sydney. He said that the Greens would base their euthanasia policy on a bill proposed by federal Greens candidate Cate Faehrmann in New South Wales earlier this year. The article continued: Dr Di Natale said that it was unlikely Ms Faehrmann’s legislation would be implemented as it currently stands, claiming that it would provide a basis for […]

World Medical Association reaffirms its strong opposition to euthanasia

The World Medical Association has reiterated its strong opposition to euthanasia. From the WMO Resolution on Euthanasia: Euthanasia, that is the act of deliberately ending the life of a patient, even at the patient’s own request or at the request of close relatives, is unethical. This does not prevent the physician from respecting the desire of a patient to allow the natural process of death to follow its course in the terminal phase of sickness. The WMO similarly opposes assisted suicide: Physicians-assisted suicide, like euthanasia, is unethical and must be condemned by the medical profession. Where the assistance of the physician […]

Michigan woman wants to commit assisted suicide, donate organs

I have been warning against coupling assisted suicide with organ harvesting since 1993, when I wrote my first anti-assisted suicide column in Newsweek. From, “The Whispers of Strangers:” Life is action and reaction, the proverbial pebble thrown into the pond. We don’t get to the Brave New World in one giant leap. Rather, the descent to depravity is reached by small steps. First, suicide is promoted as a virtue. Vulnerable people like Frances become early casualties. Then follows mercy killing of the terminally ill. From there, it’s a hop, skip and a jump to killing people who don’t have a good “quality” […]

The Washington Post gets it mostly right on abortion polling

Earlier this month, on the Washington Post’s The Fix blog, Aaron Blake published a thoughtful analysis of recent polling data on 20-week abortion bans. He states that “Democrats are sure to use the new proposed restrictions to feed the narrative of Republicans’ ‘war on women’” However, Blake points out that there is a growing body of evidence showing that women are actually more likely than men to support such a ban. Blake cites four recent national polls which show that women are anywhere from 4 to10 percentage points more likely than men to support banning abortion after 20 weeks. Blake also […]

California Governor Jerry Brown has vetoed AB 926–against which I warned last May–that would have permitted biotech companies to buy eggs from women and embryos from IVF companies. From his veto message:     Not everything in life is for sale nor should it be.     This bill would legalize the payment of money in exchange for women submitting to invasive procedures to stimulate, extract and harvest her eggs for scientific research…     In medical procedures of this kind, genuinely informed consent is difficult because the long term risks are not adequately known. J.R.R Tolkien and the Nazis

Pretty much everyone knows that JRR Tolkien was the pre-eminent fantasy writer of the past century, if not all time. His writing contains uniquely invented languages, epic back stories, and creatures that could only have proceeded from his imagination. Far from the nihilistic and often crude work of the so-called “American Tolkien” George R.R. Martin of “Game of Thrones” fame, Tolkien’s work was full of beauty, whimsy and hidden truth. What most people probably don’t know is that the Nazis were a pretty big fan of Tolkien, too. The Nazis were (as historian Heather Pringle lays out brilliantly in her […]

Besides, I believe in reading differing opinions from my own. As I get him, Bruni is mostly a social liberal–and thus it comes as a sadness–but hardly a surprise–that he supports assisted suicide and uses his huge advocacy platform to push the death agenda. (I think liberals should be adamantly opposed to assisted suicide, but then, liberalism has changed since my day when its primary purpose was protecting […]

By telling the stories of these burials and having memorial services at each of these sites, the public is brought to a deeper awareness of the humanity of the unborn and the inhumanity of abortion. Moreover, this occasion can lead those who have lost children to abortion to a greater measure of healing. This is how far the culture of death has come.  I reported earlier about the controversy in Canada in which a family wants a nursing home to stop spoon feeding their mother because she would not want to be kept alive with Alzheimer’s. But no one has the right to be starved. They have the right to refuse medical treatment–for example when sustenance has to be provided by tube. But “artificial nutrition and hydration” may be medical treatment under the law–I would prefer it weren’t–but spoon feeding is humane care that should never be denied.  But don’t tell that to the family. They are suing because […]

Does legalizing prostitution reduce child sex slavery?

Would legalizing adult prostitution decrease the demand for child sex slaves? That’s the curious argument made by one of my favorite libertarian economist. Donald J. Boudreaux , a professor of economics at George Mason University, recently wrote: If men can legally buy sex from women 18 years of age or older, men will have less demand to patronize children. And sex entrepreneurs will have less incentive to ‘supply’ children. With all prostitution being illegal, those who demand as well as those who supply commercial sex are subject to prosecution regardless of the age of the women they patronize or employ. […]

However, this week Pew Research Center released an informative poll that breaks down abortion attitudes by geographic region. Unsurprisingly, it finds that areas in the South and Midwest are […]
