7 reasons why the current marriage debate is nothing like the debate on interracial marriage

Is opposition to same-sex marriage at all like opposition to interracial marriage? One refrain in debates over marriage policy is that laws defining marriage as the union of male and female are today’s equivalent of bans on interracial marriage. Some further argue that protecting the freedom to act publicly on the basis of a religious belief that marriage is the union of a man and woman is like legally enforcing race-based segregation. This leads some people to think that the government is right to fine a New York family farm $13,000 for declining to host a lesbian wedding in their barn. These […]

If we treat soybeans, microchips, and human beings all the same -- that is, as products to bring to market -- then we’ve lost our humanity.

St. Petersburg court rules Russian gay advocacy group is a ‘foreign agent’

Citing the Russian laws against homosexual propaganda, and rules governing NGOs that receive foreign funding, a St. Petersburg court has ruled that the Russian LGBT advocacy group called Vykhod (Coming Out) must register itself as a “foreign agent.” The group is a member of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is linked with the LGBT Network based in Scotland. According to Vykhod's Facebook page, Judge Naidyonova of the Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg ruled the group is a foreign agent because it is “engaged in political activities on behalf of foreign countries,” and […]

Give grannies your ‘v-card’: Planned Parenthood, LGBT group compare voting to sex in raunchy new ad (video)

(Note: The video appears to have been removed since we first posted it.)  A new television ad encouraging people in Barack Obama's home state to vote compares voting to losing your virginity. A husky-voiced female announcer introduces Doris and Betty, two senior women who fluff their hair and wink at the camera as two young men approach a mysterious looking building together. “They know what you want to do. It's probably your first time,” she says through a smoky voice. “They wonder if you have your v-card.” Having a “v-card” is a slang term for someone who is a virgin. “Yours […]

Gay “Marriage” — the Chicken or the Egg?

An ever-increasing number of states adopting some form of legalized homosexual “marriage” is the contemporary revival of the age-old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?”  The modern version of this question is, “are states legalizing gay marriage because more Americans are in favor of it, or, are more Americans in favor of it because states are legalizing it?” With state after state in the USA adopting some form of legalized homosexual marriage it would be easy to reach the conclusion that times are changing and American values are shifting in the direction of acceptance of homosexual union. The Arabic writing on the wall: Europe learns the hard way

It takes courage to speak out against the threatening presence of Islam in today’s world. And it takes courage to defend those who have the courage to speak out. Eight years ago, after Benedict XVI gave his controversial Regensburg address, most European commentators were shamefully timid in their response. Most refused to raise their heads above the parapet, preferring the coward’s option of not making any response at all. In the light of this continuing cowardly silence, it is timely to remind ourselves of the ugly face of Islamic fundamentalism. At the darkened heart of radical Islam is what Bishop […]

Cardinal blasts ‘unjust’ new restrictions on pro-life speech in Massachusetts

Cardinal Sean O'Malley issued a statement late last week denouncing Massachusetts' new law restricting the activities of pro-life sidewalk counselors as “unjust” and “a misguided use of civil law.” In a statement posted Friday on the Archdiocese of Boston's website – and later on the Cardinal's own blog – Cardinal O'Malley said “the Massachusetts legislature acted with unseemly haste to establish what amounts to a new buffer zone of 25 feet.” “The effect again is to make it very difficult for citizens seeking to offer alternatives to women contemplating an abortion,” he wrote. The new regulations, signed into law by […]
