Doctors baffled at fewer babies being born prematurely during COVID restrictions

The recent trend that has resulted in more healthy full-term births is proving to be a worldwide phenomenon.

TORONTO, August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Since the COVID-19 outbreak, a new trend among pregnant women has developed, puzzling doctors worldwide and causing a group of Canadian scientists to investigate its cause.

On August 8, CTV reported that a group of Canadian scientists will investigate the recent decrease in babies being born prematurely. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, many Canadian hospitals have noted a significant decrease in the number of mothers giving birth to premature babies, resulting in more babies being born healthy and at full term, between 39 and 40 weeks.

Every year, on average, 3,100 babies in Canada are born prematurely, before the 37th week. Premature babies are at a higher risk of cerebral palsy, vision loss and hearing impairments; they often require immediate and extensive care after birth. Preterm birth is one of the leading causes of infant mortality worldwide, not counting abortion.

During the first months of the pandemic, Calgary reported a 37 percent drop in the number of premature births, Edmonton noted a 20 percent decline, Ottawa reported a drop of approximately 30 percent, and Halifax reported an incredible 80 percent drop.

Dr. Jon Dorling, a neonatologist at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, told CTV News, “It is definitely surprising. We would have expected that the increased stress from the pandemic (…) would have made it worse rather than better.”

This trend is also developing outside of Canada, with Denmark reporting a decrease of nearly 90 percent, Ireland noting a 70 percent decrease, and the United States and Australia reporting lower numbers than usual.

A group of researchers working with the University of Manitoba, hoping to learn the reason for the decrease of premature births, is launching an international study. The group plans to survey 19 countries and enlist dozens of doctors to research birthing statistics.

Merilee Brockway and Meghan Azad, researchers at the University of Manitoba, explained that their team is examining potential links to COVID-19. For example, reduced air pollution and reduced exposure to other infections may have led to better health for the mothers. They also believe that, because of the lockdown, many expectant mothers stayed home and may have experienced less physical stress.

“We are hoping to have the high-level analysis, to essentially answer this question and describe preterm birth rates internationally done by late fall,” Brockway told CTV News.

In 2019, 39 babies were born prematurely in Calgary between March and mid-June. However, this year that number dropped to 20.

Dr. Belal Alshaikh, a neonatologist with South Calgary Campus and Foothills Hospital, expressed surprise at the low number of babies born prematurely.

“Initially,” he said, “we thought it's just the usual variation we see during the year. However, the number continued to be low. In April, and then in May, when we start realizing it's not our usual to have this lower number during this period of the year.”

Dr. Dorling said he suspects the sudden lifestyle change due to COVID-19 may be the cause, since “people have not been trying to cram as much into their daily lives as they would normally, so perhaps just a slower work and life pattern might have helped.”

Another study, led by Dr. Prakesh Shah with Mount Sinai Hospital, will examine all babies born in Ontario between March and June and then compare those births to cases from the past 10 to 15 years.

“If this provides an opportunity that these are the reasons (for premature birth) … it would be a great public health importance,” Shah said.

There’s hope that the Canadian research team’s discoveries will reveal the causes behind premature births, leading to more babies born healthy and at term.

The explosion in Beirut on August 4 left the city in ruins with at least 220 deaths, 7,000 injuries and an estimated 300,000 people homeless. However, from the ruins come stories of heroes.

In a hospital in Beirut, Saint George Hospital University Medical Center, an unidentified nurse rescued three premature babies from the neonatal intensive care unit, carrying them to safety. She was pictured speaking on a hospital phone while holding the three premature babies.

The photographer, Bilal Jawich, told CNN Arabic that he was “amazed when I saw the nurse holding three newborns. I noticed the nurse’s calm, which contrasted the surrounding atmosphere just one meter away.”

“However, the nurse looked like she possessed a hidden force that gave her self-control and the ability to save those children,” he continued. “People stand out amidst these violent and dark and evil circumstances and this nurse was up to the task.”

Jawich related that the nurse later told him that she had been in the maternity ward when the blast hit. She said she had been knocked unconscious and came around to find herself “carrying these three children.”

The blast destroyed hospitals when they were needed most, leaving two so ravaged that they were forced to shut down completely. The New York Times reported that four nurses and at least 13 patients were killed by the explosion at Saint George Hospital University Medical Center, and at Hopital des Soeurs du Rosaire, one nurse was killed and another nurse’s legs were broken. 

“All the lifts are broken, all the respirators, all the monitors, all the doors — everything is destroyed,” said Dr. Joseph Elias, the head of the cardiology department at Hopital des Soeurs du Rosaire.

“We were barely functioning before and now we are underground, below zero,” said Tony Toufic, an engineer at Saint George Hospital who had little hope of aid from Lebanon’s dysfunctional government.

As power failures put lights and elevators out of commission, patients and hospital staff were forced to make their way through debris down staircases in darkness, some coming down from as high as nine floors.

Patients were moved to undamaged hospitals elsewhere, and the seriously injured were treated in corridors and parking lots. Hospitals were forced to turn many away.

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — LifeSite’s petition encouraging the break-up of Big Tech — because of censorship of conservatives, Christians, and libertarians — has surged past 82,000 signatures in less than two weeks.

“This petition shows no sign of slowing down,” said Scott Schittl, one of LifeSite’s campaign coordinators. “Conservatives and freedom-loving people are sending a clear message to the government about Big Tech censorship: use your power to protect free speech and democracy from these giant, power-hungry monopolies!”

This petition was inspired because of policies at Google, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube that attempt to smother the voices of a variety of conservative and libertarian pundits and news outlets.

Certain topics are almost certain to incur Big Tech censorship, including but not limited to the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19; the danger of vaccines and medical freedom generally; the dangers of the homosexual/LGBT “lifestyle”; the appalling nature of abortion; and the fact that abortion is not health care and never medically necessary.

Big Tech companies commonly censor conservative content in one of two ways. They can directly ban content or users from their platforms, like when a video is removed from YouTube or when Twitter freezes a user’s account or deplatforms him. The other way Big Tech can censor conservatives is by manipulating search results so links to conservative sources are pushed far enough down the list of results that the average person will stop his search or decide to look at one of the proposed links instead.

The effect that these forms of banning and manipulation have is to make it appear that the only voices speaking about certain issues are liberal, pro-LGBT, and pro–mandatory vaccine.

As such, these Big Tech policies of banning and manipulating legitimate news and opinion are seriously undermining free speech and democracy.

This petition, therefore, calls for the government to use existing antitrust laws to break up the Big Tech monopolies — including Facebook, Twitter, and Google (owner of YouTube) — which have grown enormously over the past two decades.

“Of course, we believe that people are capable of sorting through opinion and news themselves. However, we cannot accept Big Tech stepping in to censor what opinion and news is available,” said Schittl. “Regrettably, Big Tech must now be broken up if legitimate free speech is going to survive and continue to thrive on the internet.”

The competition of ideas is essential for democracy. Big Tech cannot remain as the self-appointed arbiter of what ideas are or are not acceptable for public consumption.

The thing is, most people actually agree.

A recent Pew poll reported that 75% of Americans believe that Big Tech companies have too much influence, and there is an overwhelming support for breaking up the Big Tech monopolies.

President Trump took a step in the right direction in late May with his executive order to combat social media censorship through more regulation.

But much more can and should be done right now.

This petition calls on policymakers to use existing laws against monopolies to start the process of breaking up Big Tech.

California pastor faces jail time for defying restraining order, holding in-person worship service

NEWBURY PARK, California, August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – A pastor and churchgoers of a megachurch in California are facing a contempt of court charge and possible fines and jail time after defying a coronavirus-based restraining order and holding in-person worship services with thousands of worshipers in attendance.

Godspeak Calvary Chapel in Newbury Park is now facing a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, where “the county will ask the Ventura County Superior Court to hold the contempt hearing on Friday,” according to the Ventura County Star.

Failing to obey a court’s restraining order technically amounts to contempt of court and could be sanctioned with fines or even jail time.

“The county is also seeking a court order to beef up its temporary restraining order to allow Ventura County sheriff’s deputies to enter (Pastor Rob) McCoy’s Godspeak Calvary Chapel and ‘immediately take all actions reasonable and necessary to close the property to prevent any further indoor worship services … until further order of court,’” the Ventura County Star reported.

Liberty Counsel, a law firm defending religious freedom, recounted that “Superior Court Judge Matthew Guasco issued a temporary restraining order last Friday to McCoy, the Church, and Does 1-1000, along with anyone ‘acting in concert with them’ who might attend worship in the future.”

The reference to “Does 1-1000” simply means that the first 1,000 people to show up at the church were supposed to be cited.

In his sermon, McCoy said, “And the powers that were given this nation were the first three words of the preamble of that Constitution, ‘We the People.’ And you have freedom to worship your God. It’s between you and Him and you’re accountable to God. And no man is allowed to take that.”

Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, which does not represent Godspeak Calvary Chapel in court, explained, “The First Amendment draws a red line that the state may not cross. That red line has been crossed by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s no worship orders. Gov. Newsom has clearly favored some speech, like the current wave of protests, while disfavoring religious speech. This, he cannot do.”

Amid a surge in new cases of COVID-19, Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom in July had once again banned worship services inside churches in dozens of counties. During a press conference, he even hinted that some of the new restrictions might stay in place until a vaccine is developed.

“We’re seeing an increase in the spread of the virus, so that’s why it’s incumbent upon all of us to recognize soberly that COVID-19 is not going away any time soon until there is a vaccine or an effective therapy,” he said.

Newsom ordered all counties in California to close indoor operations for dine-in restaurants, movie theaters, zoos, museums, as well as places like bowling alleys. “Additionally, bars, brewpubs, breweries, and pubs must close all operations both indoor and outdoor statewide, unless they are offering sit-down, outdoor dine-in meals. Alcohol can only be sold in the same transaction as a meal.”

Counties on what is called the County Monitoring List are required to stop indoor worship services. Currently, more than 35 counties are on that list, including Ventura County, where Godspeak Calvary Chapel is located.

California has a population of almost 40 million. Less than 11,000 people have died of COVID-19 since the outbreak. Seventy-five percent of deaths were people 65 years and older.

In Ventura County itself, with a population of roughly 850,000, less than 9,000 total cases were reported since the outbreak. Only 92 people officially died from the coronavirus, which is far less than one person per day. Still, worship services are prohibited.

In May, the U.S. Supreme Court had rejected a California church’s request to block the Golden State from limiting the number of people attending religious services.

Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed by Republican President George W. Bush, sided with the liberals and explained, “Although California’s guidelines place restrictions on places of worship, those restrictions appear consistent with the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.”

“Similar or more severe restrictions apply to comparable secular gatherings, including lectures, concerts, movie showings, spectator sports, and theatrical performances, where large groups of people gather in close proximity for extended periods of time,” he added.

Roberts did not take into account that the First Amendment does not specifically protect concerts or spectator sports, but the “free exercise” of religion.

UNITED STATES, August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Bill Gates has described President Donald Trump as a vaccine skeptic and said that the president has encouraged him to meet with prominent vaccine critic Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

In an interview with Wired, Gates said that he hasn’t spoken to Trump directly since March 2018, but claimed he has spoken with both Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an attempt to lobby them to provide U.S. funding “to procure the [coronavirus] vaccine for the developing countries.”

“It’s very important to be able to tell the vaccine companies to build extra factories for the billions of doses,” Gates said. 

Gates also said that in previous meetings Trump has encouraged him to meet with Kennedy.

“Every meeting I have with him he is like, ‘Hey, I don’t know about vaccines, and you have to meet with this guy Robert Kennedy Jr. who hates vaccines and spreads crazy stuff about them,’” Gates said.

Trump announced last month that his administration is “all set to march when it comes to the [coronavirus] vaccine,” with a military general overseeing the logistics of delivering the still-in-development product. He has previously stated that a future coronavirus vaccine will be voluntary. In a White House interview given last month Trump said that if he had a choice between vaccines and therapeutics, he would choose therapeutics every time.

Wired has published both an audio and written text version of the interview, both of which they say are edited and which have some notable differences. The comments about Kennedy appear in the text and not in the audio version of the interview.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., nephew of former U.S. president John F. Kennedy and an American environmental attorney and author, has been outspoken in outlining reasons for concern about various vaccine projects, including those that receive funding from Gates. Kennedy has been raising awareness about children injured by vaccines since before the coronavirus outbreak.

In an April 9, 2020 article, Kennedy wrote: “Vaccines, for Bill Gates, are a strategic philanthropy that feed his many vaccine-related businesses (including Microsoft’s ambition to control a global vaccination ID enterprise) and give him dictatorial control of global health policy.”

A December 2019 article in Scientific American described the vision of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers for embedding vaccine records “directly into the skin” of children.

“Along with the vaccine, a child would be injected with a bit of dye that is invisible to the naked eye but easily seen with a special cell-phone filter, combined with an app that shines near-infrared light onto the skin. The dye would be expected to last up to five years, according to tests on pig and rat skin and human skin in a dish.”

The development of this idea, which the article proudly noted avoids using “iris scans” that might violate privacy, was “funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.” It “came about because of a direct request from Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates himself, who has been supporting efforts to wipe out diseases such as polio and measles across the world.”

Longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and one of Trump’s top pandemic advisors, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said in April 2020 he thought it was “possible” that one day Americans may have to carry certificates showing they are immune to the coronavirus.

“I think it might actually have some merit under certain circumstances,” he said.

Also in April 2020, Gates speculated, “Eventually we will have some digital certificates to show who has recovered or been tested recently or when we have a vaccine who has received it.”

In the same month Gates told the Financial Times that  “normalcy only returns when we’ve largely vaccinated the entire global population.” During the interview Gates interrupted his own reflections on the wide-ranging impacts of the coronavirus crisis, saying “you don’t have a choice,” although it is unclear exactly what he meant by the comment.

In a recent online debate on mandatory vaccinations Kennedy pointed out that a significant percentage of participants in a recent trial for a leading coronavirus vaccine have been hospitalized. 

Kennedy also noted that several of the coronavirus vaccine developers, a number of which have received funding from Gates, have been forced to pay billions of dollars in criminal penalties related to their medical products.

“It requires a cognitive dissonance for people who understand the criminal corporate cultures of these four companies to believe that they’re doing this in every other product that they have, but they’re not doing it with vaccines,” Kennedy said.

The Wired interview hosts dismiss as “misinformation” by “conspiracy theorists” the idea that Gates is involved with any plans to link coronavirus vaccines with digital identification and microchips proving vaccination status.

Without directly referencing digital IDs or microchips, Gates remarked “well, strangely, I’m involved in almost everything that anti-science is fighting. I’m involved with climate change, GMOs, and vaccines.” 

He went on to generally describe anti-vaccine criticism as a “kind of titillating, over simplistic explanation of, ‘OK, there’s just an evil person, and that explains all of this.’”

A number of leading global figures, such as former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, have called for the creation of digital IDs to track “disease status” as part of the plans for responding to the coronavirus crisis.

At the conclusion of the interview, Gates said that by the time things had got back to normal that “at least ten years of progress in forcing people to do things in a digital way will have happened in a two year period.” 

Asked by interviewer Steven Levy when he anticipated that things would get back to normal, Gates responded: “sometime by the end of 2021 for the rich countries and by the end of 2022 for the world at large.”

“But will it be the normal we knew before?” Levy asked.

“Well in the sense that you won’t have to worry about dying of [COVID], yes. In the sense that at least ten years of progress in forcing people to do things in a digital way will have happened in a two year period,” Gates replied. He predicted advances in telemedicine and “e-commerce” and changes in business travel and commercial office space.

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – A coronavirus vaccine should be mandatory, and tax penalties, higher insurance premiums, and denial of many government and private services ought to be considered for those refusing the shot, two doctors and an attorney argued in USA Today on Thursday.

“[W]hile the measures that will be necessary to defeat the coronavirus will seem draconian, even anti-American to some, we believe that there is no alternative. Simply put, getting vaccinated is going to be our patriotic duty,” wrote Dr. Michael Lederman, Dr. Stuart Youngner, and Maxwell J. Mehlman.

There is no “alternative to vaccine-induced herd immunity in a pandemic,” they argued. “Broad induction of immunity in the population by immunization will be necessary to end this pandemic.”

The USA Today article, published August 6, is titled “Defeat COVID-19 by requiring vaccination for all. It's not un-American, it's patriotic.” Its original subhead (see screenshot below) read, “Make vaccines free, don't allow religious or personal objections, and punish those who won't be vaccinated. They are threatening the lives of others.” It has since been changed to “Make vaccines free, don't allow religious or personal objections, and create disincentives for those who refuse vaccines shown to be safe and effective.”

“When a vaccine is ready,” the doctors wrote, it must be free and exemptions must only be made for people with “medical contraindications to immunization.” 

But “medical conditions that prohibit all COVID-19 vaccines will be rare,” they claimed. No religious or personal objections to receiving the shot or shots should be honored, they wrote, and harsh penalties should be adopted by important sectors of society to pressure the populace to comply. 

The physicians proposed, “Private businesses could refuse to employ or serve unvaccinated individuals. Schools could refuse to allow unimmunized children to attend classes. Public and commercial transit companies — airlines, trains and buses — could exclude refusers. Public and private auditoriums could require evidence of immunization for entry.”

They then outlined how a “registry of immunization will be needed with names entered after immunization is completed.” People who receive the vaccine should be issued “certification cards” with expiration dates (“the durability of protection by different vaccines may vary and may require periodic booster immunizations”).

The concept of “immunization cards” or digital vaccine records was floated shortly before the coronavirus outbreak and since the virus has spread.

Lederman, Mehlman, and Youngner concluded by comparing Americans’ fight against the coronavirus to World War I and World War II. Around 37 million casualties can be attributed to World War I, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. World War II was even deadlier, with 70 million to 85 million deaths – including those due to famine, the Holocaust, disease, and other war-related factors – being attributable to it. 

As of press time, worldwide, there have been 20,383,417 million reported coronavirus cases but only 741,707 reported deaths. 13,281,928 people have contracted the virus and recovered. These numbers may not be accurate due to the unreliability of COVID-19 tests and reporting systems in the United States – which has seen people who were never even tested for the virus receive positive results, the governor of Ohio receiving both positive and negative test results on the same day, and at least one person who died in a motorcycle crash coded as a COVID-19 death – and the likelihood of communist China, where the virus originated, downplaying its infection and death rates.

During World War I and World War II, “Everyone contributed, no one was allowed to opt out merely because it conflicted with a sense of autonomy, and draft dodgers who refused to serve were subject to penalties,” the doctors wrote. “True, conscientious objectors could refuse to use weapons for religious reasons, but they were obligated to help out in other ways, serving in noncombatant roles. There are no such alternatives for vaccination.”

In a recent online debate on mandatory vaccinations, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pointed out that a significant percentage of participants in a recent trial for a leading coronavirus vaccine have been hospitalized. 

Kennedy, a liberal environmental attorney and member of the Kennedy political dynasty, also noted that several of the coronavirus vaccine developers, a number of which have received funding from Bill Gates, have been forced to pay billions of dollars in criminal penalties related to their medical products.

“It requires a cognitive dissonance for people who understand the criminal corporate cultures of these four companies to believe that they’re doing this in every other product that they have, but they’re not doing it with vaccines,” Kennedy said.

In an April 9 article, Kennedy wrote: “Vaccines, for Bill Gates, are a strategic philanthropy that feed his many vaccine-related businesses (including Microsoft’s ambition to control a global vaccination ID enterprise) and give him dictatorial control of global health policy.”

Kennedy has been raising awareness about those injured by vaccines since before the coronavirus outbreak and has now emerged as one of the strongest voices against a forced COVID-19 vaccine.

Many immunizations are made from cell lines of aborted babies, and a number of the coronavirus vaccines being developed are also using immorally obtained fetal cell lines. 

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today that his country has approved the world’s first coronavirus vaccine and that one of his daughters received both doses of it. “Questions over its [the vaccine’s] safety remain,” noted one CNN headline, with another asking, “ … would you take a vaccine from Vladimir Putin?”

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Former Vice President Joe Biden has named Sen. Kamala Harris of California as his partner on the Democrat presidential ticket, doubling down on his allegiance with his party’s most vehemently pro-abortion elements.

Biden made the announcement Tuesday afternoon, calling Harris a “fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants”:

“By ‘little guy’ you obviously don’t mean the preborn baby,” retorted Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America (SFLA).

As a black woman, Harris satisfies left-wing activists’ demands for female and minority representation, while the campaign may be counting on her background as a prosecutor to appeal to voters who lean left on policy but aren’t on board with the wave of anti-police sentiment promoted by Black Lives Matter. But on abortion, LGBT issues, and religious freedom, Harris is fully in sync with the far left.

During her time as Attorney General of California, Harris played a key role in defending Planned Parenthood over its sale of aborted baby parts (which violated multiple federal laws, according to undercover video of abortion industry personnel). Most of the footage was taken in California, yet Harris announced she would investigate the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) journalists rather than Planned Parenthood, and went on to raid the home of CMP head David Daleiden while accepting the abortion giant’s donations for her Senate run. 

Numerous pro-life organizations called on Harris to resign over the apparent conflict of interest, and Daleiden’s attorneys cited leaked emails that showed Harris’ office coordinating with Planned Parenthood on drafts of legislation that would criminalize undercover investigations like CMP’s.

As a Senate candidate, she bragged about forcing religiously-owned companies and pro-life pregnancy centers to violate their consciences. During Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, Harris tried to get him to call the Obergefell ruling that forced states to recognize same-sex “marriage” one of the “great moments in the history of the Supreme Court.” In December 2018, she suggested Trump judicial nominee Brian Buescher’s membership in the Catholic fraternal organization Knights of Columbus was problematic because of its pro-life, pro-marriage stances.

During her own presidential run, Harris proposed a plan under which states with a “pattern of violating Roe v. Wade” would not be able to enforce any new duly enacted pro-life measure “until [the Justice Department] determines it comports with the standards laid out by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, as applied in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, and the Women’s Health Protection Act.” Those conditions would destroy states’ ability to enact even the mildest of abortion restrictions.

Harris’s stance perfectly aligns with that of Biden, who supports “codifying” Roe in federal law; repealing the Hyde Amendment (which bars direct public funding of most abortions); forcing states to accept Medicare funding for Planned Parenthood; reversing the Mexico City Policy (which bars federal funds from supporting abortion overseas); and directing the Justice Department to “do everything in its power” to block virtually all state pro-life laws, including parental notification requirements, ultrasound laws, and waiting periods.

Laurie Rubiner, a former vice president of public policy for Planned Parenthood, said of Harris’ abortion plans in 2019 to Vox, “What is different about this is that she’s really going on the offense.” 

“That’s what we’re afraid of and what every American should balk at,” said Hawkins. “Sen. Kamala Harris has already proved that she will use any legal authority available to her to target pro-life Americans, and, in plans announced during her presidential run, she was direct in saying she wanted more power. Abortion was always going to be an issue in this election, but the stakes just got higher. The choice for anyone who...rejects abortion at any point in pregnancy and with taxpayer funds is crystal clear.”

Kamala Harris is an extremist who supports abortion on demand through birth, paid for by taxpayers, and even infanticide – an agenda rejected by the overwhelming majority of Americans, including millions of Independents and rank-and-file Democrats,” added Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser. “As attorney general of California, Harris conspired with the abortion industry to launch a politically-motivated shakedown of brave citizen journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s role in the harvest and sale of aborted baby parts for profit.”

Court awards pro-life group damages after city refuses to fly flag showing unborn baby

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, August 11, 2020 (Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms) — The Justice Centre commented on the decision of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal released yesterday in the case of Prince Albert Right to Life Association v. City of Prince Albert. This case concerns the City’s refusal to allow a pro-life flag to fly on its courtesy flagpole in 2017, while allowing numerous other political, religious, social and cultural groups to fly their flags on the courtesy flagpole.

In its decision, the Court of Appeal upheld an award of costs against the City for its misconduct in handling PARLA’s application to fly its flag, but declined to issue a declaration that the City violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the unique circumstances of the case.

For years, the City of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan maintained a courtesy flagpole in Memorial Square at City Hall and permitted groups or organizations to fly the flag “to help increase public awareness of their programs and activities.”

A wide variety of groups were permitted to fly their commemorative flags on the pole, from cultural and seniors’ organizations to LGBTQ Pride.

The Prince Albert Right to Life Association (PARLA) is a non-profit organization, comprised of Prince Albert and area residents, which seeks to promote the sanctity of life at all stages of development. PARLA’s work includes hosting events such as “Celebrate Life Week” and “Life Chain”, as well as providing aid to women and families with unplanned pregnancies.

As explained in the filed affidavit of Valerie Hettrick, PARLA had been permitted to raise a flag on the City’s courtesy flag pole for “Celebrate Life Week” for the past 20 years. Since 2007, PARLA used the same pink and white flag with a logo of “Umbert the Unborn”, a cartoon fetus. The phrases “Celebrate Life Week” and “Please Let Me Live” also appear on the flag.

Despite allowing numerous other groups to fly their flag on the pole in 2017, the City refused to allow PARLA to fly its flag. The City failed to give PARLA any reasons for its refusal, but rather gave a statement to the media that PARLA’s flag, used since 2007, would never again fly at City Hall.

On behalf of PARLA, the Justice Centre filed a court application against the City of Prince Albert for its refusal to fly PARLA’s flag. The court application sought a declaration that the decision to refuse to raise PARLA’s flag violated the group’s freedom of expression, protected by section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Prior to the court hearing, the City changed its policy to end the practice of allowing access to a courtesy flagpole.

The Court of Queen’s Bench heard the application on September 25, 2018 in Prince Albert. In its decision, the Court rebuked the City for its “mishandling of the application tendered by PARLA,” noting: “It is evident that the City did not follow its own Policy or proceed in a procedurally fair manner.” The Court ordered $6,000 in costs against the City of Prince Albert. The lower court however dismissed PARLA’s application, concluding that since the City no longer gave community groups access to the flagpole, a decision in the case would have no practical effect.

The Justice Centre filed a narrow appeal to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal on behalf of PARLA on the basis that the lower court should have issued a declaration that the City violated PARLA’s Charter freedom of expression. The City cross-appealed against the court order that it pay PARLA $6,000.00 in costs.

The hearing took place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

The Court of Appeal declined to issue a declaration that the City violated the Charter, but affirmed the award of costs against the City stating at paragraph 93 of its decision: “PARLA, after making the application, was stonewalled by the City until it became impossible to fly the flag as had been done in past years. Members of the community are entitled to better treatment than this from public officials.” The Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s ruling that, since the City had entirely rescinded its policy allowing community groups to use the flagpole, the matter could not be referred back to the City to reconsider its decision and a declaration of a Charter infringement in such circumstances would ultimately be meaningless.

Charter freedoms need to be defended or they will be lost,” states Marty Moore, Justice Centre staff lawyer. “When a municipality violates citizens’ rights, the Charter tasks our courts with the responsibility of vindicating citizens’ rights and providing a just and appropriate remedy for the violation, which may be a court declaration.”

“We appreciate the Court’s recognition that our clients were ‘stonewalled by the City until it became impossible to fly the flag’, but believe it is necessary for courts to expressly uphold citizens’ Charter rights against unreasonable infringement by government,” continues Moore.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – A Catholic priest who openly admits that he’s “gay” is praising same-sex couples raising children as “holy families.” He demanded that Catholic show respect for “LGBTQ families as communities of love.”

Fr. Bryan Massingale, in an August 6, 2020 article that appeared in U.S. Catholic, also told Catholic parishes that to have “credibility as the church of Jesus Christ” means to offer “extravagant welcome” to “LGBTQ Catholics.”

Massingale is a priest in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, led by Archbishop Jerome Listecki, and is a professor at Fordham University in New York. Massingale writes regularly for U.S. Catholic Magazine, as well as for well-known dissident publication National Catholic Reporter.

“Speaking of love: Respect LGBTQ families as communities of love who struggle to love as any other family does,” Massingale wrote in his most recent article. “Many among us are raising children who provide both delight and challenge.”

“These families are also ‘holy families’—imperfectly yet truly holy—like every other family in a parish,” he claimed, thereby comparing people in objectively sinful relationships to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

“Even if you disapprove of or do not understand the love that binds a couple together, respect this ‘domestic church’ as an incubator of faith and love,” Massingale continued.

Not surprisingly, pro-homosexual Jesuit priest Fr. James Martin praised Massingale for his article. “This article is a great resource for pastors and parishioners hoping to take the first steps in reaching out to #LGBTQ Catholics,” Martin tweeted.

The Catholic Church condemns homosexual acts.

“Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’ They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved,” states the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Catechism is equally clear on what constitutes a family, stating, “A man and a woman united in marriage, together with their children, form a family. This institution is prior to any recognition by public authority, which has an obligation to recognize it.”

The term “domestic church” is merely another word for family, the Catechism adds.

Massingale, however, is unfazed by Catholic doctrine.

In 2019, he began one of his talks with the words, “I come to this conversation as a black, gay priest and theologian. I am informed not only by my sexuality, my faith, and my study of the Church’s ethical beliefs, but also by the traditions of black freedom struggles in the US, struggles which, at their core, are matters of the soul and the spirit.”

“Our knowledge about human sexuality is dynamic and evolving,” Massingale wrote in his recent article. “We are discovering that human sexuality is more complex than we ever realized. So we have to commit ourselves and our parishes to ongoing education about human sexuality.”

“Some Catholics may feel uneasy, concerned that new discoveries may unsettle previous certainties,” he admitted. “Here we need to recall a fundamental Catholic conviction: Reason and faith are not contradictory.”

For Massingale, this essentially means that faith has to adapt to the newest sexual trends. Massingale did not acknowledge that moral truths of the faith, for instance pertaining to marriage and sexuality, do not change or adapt to various times and places. 

The theology professor also discouraged faithful Catholics from attempting to tell the truth to people attracted to members of the same sex.

“Finally, what if parishes or ministers decide that, in conscience, they cannot adapt such a pastoral orientation?” he asked, referring to his proposal of essentially embracing homosexuality and gender ideology as part of Church teaching.

“They should be upfront and say that this is not the place for us,” he responded.

“I realize that some might object, believing that LGBTQ Catholics need ‘the truth’ to save their souls,” he added. “I invite such persons to consider this painful truth: After such zealous counsel, many LGBTQ Catholics have endured dark depression, abandoned religion altogether, engaged in self-harm, and tragically even taken their lives. Are these really risks worth taking out of the belief that you are the appointed agent to save a soul?”

He did not acknowledge that the same risk is also there if they aren’t told the truth.

LifeSiteNews reached out to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, asking for comment on Massingale’s most recent article. The Archdiocese did not respond.

According to a recent profile in The Revealer, Massingale attended Saint Francis Seminary in Milwaukee from 1979 until 1983.

At the time, practicing homosexual Archbishop Rembert Weakland led the archdiocese. Weakland was eventually found to have mishandled allegations of sexual abuse, shredding reports about guilty priests and allowing those priests to stay active in parish ministry.

During his time at the seminary, Massingale “began to deal with questions of his sexual identity and how to unite his faith, race, sexuality, and aspirations for social justice,” The Revealer wrote.

The priest said, “I realized at some deep place that I wasn’t even consciously aware of that I didn’t see how God could be imaged as black or as gay, and certainly not both simultaneously.”

“That’s when it first dawned on me: The problem is not from God’s side of the equation. The problem is with the Church,” he added, failing to mention that the problem might also be with sinful human beings.

“Prior to his ordination, he had shared that he was gay only with close friends, his spiritual director, and the seminary psychologist,” The Revealer stated.

“In the early 2000s, when same-sex marriage was still not a legal option in most states, Massingale went against the guidance given by the Wisconsin Catholic Conference of Bishops and argued that a person could support same-sex marriage and still be a good Catholic.”

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – U.S. toymaker Hasbro has pulled a doll made for girls after a viral video made by a furious mom revealed the doll to have a secret button between the legs that when pushed made sexual-like sounds such as giggling and gasping. 

The video has been seen nearly 2.5 million times combined via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. A petition calling for the manufacturer to remove the dolls from store shelves and internet retailers has quickly garnered nearly a half-million signatures. 

The doll at the center of the social media firestorm is Hasbro’s “Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy” doll, based on the popular animated movie franchise.  

A concerned mom, Jamie Cornaby, recorded a 3-minute-long explanatory video after her 2-year-old daughter received one of the dolls as a birthday present.

“Ok, I wanted to do a quick video, because I find this disturbing and I find it's something that needs to be shared. As you all know, stuff that's been going on in the world about the sex trafficking [of] kids and things that are thrown in our kids faces to kind of groom them and make them kind of a little bit more oblivious to things that are really happening,” she said. 

Continued the mom: “You touch her tummy, and she makes little singing sounds and she's super cute. Well, I was showing her to my husband and I heard some other sounds that I'd never heard before.  And if you look down here ––I figured a video was the way–– so I just touched her tummy and she's going to sing for a minute. But down here is a button, right here on her privates, and if you push those, she makes these sounds.  Like a gasping sound.”

“And I know some of you might not, like, think this is a big deal, but especially since I've had kids: This is wrong.”

Cornaby related that nothing was said of the button between the legs on the box.  

“Nothing. It's just, it's just there. And it makes a gasping sound when you touch her privates. And to me, it's just like sexual sounds and it's so disturbing.”


Hasbro has attempted to explain away the troubling location of the button, telling multiple media outlets that the button was “designed to react when the doll was seated, but we recognize the placement of the sensor may be perceived as inappropriate."

A petition to remove the doll from stores was signed by hundreds of thousands. 

“Our society is conditioning our children to think pedophilia is ok,” begins the petition, aimed at five major retailers ––Target, Walmart, amazon, Dollar General, and Family Dollar Stores.  

The petition continues:

This Trolls World Tour doll named Poppy has a button on her private area under her skirt. When you push this button on the doll's private she gasps and giggles.  This is not okay for a child's toy! This toy needs to be removed from our stores.”

What will this toy make our innocent, impressionable children think? That it’s fun when someone touches your private area? That pedophilia and child molestation are ok? It’s not ok! It’s not fun! It’s damaging and has long term [e]ffects on a child’s mental/physical health!

As word of the doll with an ill-advised button placement circulated on social media, more red flags were raised about the doll’s appearance, its packaging, and purpose.

“Is Hasbro normalizing grooming & facilitating child abuse?” asked former Senate candidate Sam Parker in a Tweet.

Parker didn’t stop there. 

“Here is a hypothetical equivalent product for boys,” offered Parker at the beginning of a series of follow up Tweets.  His Tweet showed a Power Ranger with the action figure’s crotch circled.  

“Now imagine a button right here on an action figure for boys that made sounds like, ‘mmmmm,’ or ‘ahhhhh,’ but the package didn’t say anything about it,” he said. 

“Hasbro, why would you put out a doll with a genital button? And why would you also not say anything about it on the packaging?” asked Parker of the toy manufacturing giant.  

“Looks doubly bad,” he declared.  

Parker noted an eerie correlation between the colors of the doll’s hair and clothing: 

“The doll's hair & skirt resemble the Trans & Minor-Attracted Person Flags, respectively,” he pointed out, providing illustrations of both the “Trans” and “Minor-Attracted Person” flags.  

“Then there's the Rainbow packaging,” he added. 

“Between this, the button's location & sounds, & the lack of info about it on the packaging, it's hard to call any of this a coincidence,” he added. 

Fact-checking site Lead Stories claims it has debunked the criticisms and warnings, attributing the social media whirlwind to hyper-vigilant moms.  

“There is no evidence, beyond the fears of some mothers, that the button is part of a secret strategy by the toymaker to prep kids for sex trafficking,” asserted Lead Stories.  

Hasbro has said that it will discontinue production of the doll and Walmart has already deleted it from its website.

Mother’s death triggers calls for state investigation of Alabama abortion center

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama, August 11, 2020 (Operation Rescue) — When a woman was helped out of the West Alabama Women’s Center (WAWC) abortion facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on May 7, 2020, pro-life activists on the scene suspected something had gone very wrong with an abortion.

Later, clinic workers informed a local pro-life activist that the unidentified woman had in fact died.

That launched efforts by a coalition of pro-life groups, including Operation Rescue, CEC for Life, Life Legal Defense Foundation, and other Alabama pro-life groups to learn more about this incident.

The pro-life groups discovered that the clinic never called 911 for help, even though witnesses said the woman looked unwell, struggled to walk, and needed the support of another person to make it the few feet from the facility to the parking lot and into a private vehicle. 

Response to complaints

Complaints were filed with the Alabama Department of Public Health, which oversees abortion facilities in Alabama, and the Board of Medical Examiners, which has jurisdiction over physicians.

The Alabama Department of Public Health responded that it will not investigate this woman’s death, claiming it is outside their jurisdiction since someone other than an ambulance crew drove her to the hospital where she died later that same day.

The abortionist at the time was Louis Payne, 81, who conveniently retired at the end of July. A medical board investigation is underway into his actions that may have contributed to the woman’s death, but because of Payne’s retirement, its outcome will have no effect on the abortion facility or its staff.


Payne was replaced just days ago by Utah abortionist Leah Torres, who was recently fired from a previous job after posting controversial remarks while trolling pro-life activists on Twitter.

Sale of WAWC

The WAWC made headlines in May 2020, when the Yellowhammer Fund purchased it from long-time owner Gloria Gray.

The Yellowhammer Fund was a small organization founded in 2016, to provide financial assistance to women seeking abortions in Alabama. All that changed when the state passed the Alabama Human Life Protection Act last year, which would have essentially ended the vast majority of abortions had it not been blocked by a court order. Suddenly, those who favored abortions, including several celebrities, started donating to the Yellowhammer Fund, and through the use of social media, encouraged others to do so.

According to one news report, the fund went from having less than $5,000 in the bank to having over $2 million. Soon, Amanda Reyes, a LGBTQ activist and former abortion clinic escort who served as the fund’s founder and director, came under fire from Alabama abortion businesses and supporters who questioned the way the money was being spent.



Reyes, who had no experience running an abortion facility, took over administration of the WAWC — reportedly on the same day in May when one of their first patients died.

Licensing regulations not followed

Now enter the Alabama Department of Health. 

It has allowed the WAWC to continue operating under the old facility license issued during Gray’s ownership, in violation of Alabama Administrative Code Chapter 420-5-1, which requires the issuance of a new license upon change of ownership. 

The clinic was not inspected since Reyes took control. It was last inspected in January 2019 — 19 months ago. The lack of an inspection and the ADPH’s reluctance to follow their own licensing laws has left pro-life activists disappointed and angry at the ADPH’s reluctance to follow their own rules.

Fr. Terry Gensemer, director of CEC For Life, comments, “ADPH’s refusal to investigate this clinic is unconscionable. To our knowledge, this clinic has not been inspected in over a year; it has also recently changed ownership, hired a doctor with a questionable reputation, and a patient seen leaving their clinic died shortly after. According to its own regulations, and just plain decency and respect for a woman’s death, an inspection is the very least ADPH could do.”

Ellie Hermann, a registered nurse who often stands outside of WAWC to offer women life-affirming alternatives, reports, “One or two women per month are rushed from here to DCH Regional Medical, usually in passenger cars driven by employees of the clinic. Imagine just being dropped off at the curb in an unstable condition, possibly hemorrhaging or groggy from medication — how can the ADPH pretend that kind of care deserves a license?”

Ashley Wright, a representative for the Alabama chapters of Students for Life of America, comments, “The abortion industry targets millennials with an astounding 46 percent of abortions committed on college age women. SFLA, including the group at University of Alabama, works to make the safety of women a priority and to ensure that women can have their baby and get their education. SFLA is calling for a full investigation of West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, following the tragic loss of life reported.”

Autopsy Report anticipated

The woman that died underwent an autopsy. The autopsy report has been requested and is expected soon. That should answer more questions about the woman’s death just hours after leaving the WAWC on May 7.

“We have reported on abortion-related maternal deaths far too often. Each one represents an avoidable double tragedy — the loss of a mother and the loss of a baby. This has a ripple effect of grief on the family, friends, and community,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “Abortion is not safe, no matter what the Abortion Cartel says, and the state ignoring patient deaths only makes abortion businesses more dangerous, because they become emboldened with the understanding that there will never be consequences, even when a woman dies. Those attitudes are unacceptable and must change to prevent endangering human lives.”

Alabama State Senator Gerald Allen will join the pro-life coalition of state and national groups for a press conference on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. outside the West Alabama Women’s Center to call for an immediate investigation into the woman’s death and the reportedly substandard clinic conditions that have existed since Reyes has assumed control of the abortion facility. 

Operation Rescue will continue its own investigation and will report updates as they become available.

NEW YORK, August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, has identified the Black Lives Matter movement as a threat “to the health and safety of black Americans today.”

“One of the greatest threats to the health and safety of black Americans today is not the police. It is Black Lives Matter. The facts are incontrovertible,” Donohue said in a statement released Monday.

He referred to a recent Gallup poll, according to which 81 percent of black Americans want the same or more police presence in their area, not less.

Donohue focused his criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement on the most vocal organization claiming to represent the interest of black Americans, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Global Network Foundation.

“On the website of Black Lives Matter there is a petition calling for ‘a national defunding of police.’ While others are also calling to defund the police, Black Lives Matter is front and center,” Donohue said.

He pointed out that one of BLM Global Network Foundation’s three co-founders in a recent interview has called for getting rid of not only police, but also the prison system — a goal echoed by the organization’s Chicago chapter.

“We say #DefundThePolice and #DefundDepOfCorrections because they work in tandem,” Black Lives Matter Chicago wrote on Twitter. “The rise of mass incarceration occurred alongside the rise of militarized and mass policing. They must be abolished as a system. #DefundTheCarceralSystem.”

Donohue emphasized he wasn’t simply blaming misguided black people for advancing these objectives. “One reason why we have gotten to this absurd stage is because of the white ‘allies’ of Black Lives Matter,” he explained.

“To be specific, legions of young affluent white men and women have been intellectually seduced by their ideologically corrupt professors,” Donohue continued. “They sincerely believe that the cops are the enemy and the prisons are evil. They need a reality check.”

Donohue spelled out the disastrous consequences for regular Americans, if police and the prison system were abolished.

“Black Lives Matter officials will be unaffected, as will their white allies; they live in comfortable neighborhoods,” the Catholic League’s president admitted. However, “[i]t will be innocent black men, women and children who will pay the price for their insanity. It doesn’t get any more perverse than this. Indeed, the Klan could not improve on their agenda.”

While Donohue did not comment on BLM Global Network Foundation’s anti-family agenda, most Catholic critics have focused on two points in the organization’s mission statement.

Outspoken Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas on Twitter linked to the movement’s website and commented, “Please educate yourself on this!”

He pointed out that Black Lives Matter’s statement of belief mentions two points “that are contrary to FAITH...#1 opposing the nuclear family (where is dad?) and #2 opposing God’s plan for sex as a union of male & female.”

“This agenda is DANGEROUS!” Strickland concluded.

Black Lives Matter, according to its own website, wants to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.”

The term “villages” likely refers to Hillary Clinton’s book It Takes a Village, the title of which was based on the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child.” Clinton argued for society’s shared responsibility for successful childrearing. Catholic senator Rick Santorum eventually wrote a rebuttal titled It Takes a Family.

In addition to wanting to “disrupt” the traditional family, Black Lives Matter fosters “a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).”

The website’s section on “What We Believe” mentions transgenderism in several other places. “We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead,” the movement stresses. “We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.”

The term “cisgender” is intended to denote a person who considers himself a member of his own true biological sex.

The Black Lives Matter movement claims that liberation movements for black people “in this country have created room, space, and leadership mostly for Black heterosexual, cisgender men — leaving women, queer and transgender people, and others either out of the movement or in the background to move the work forward with little or no recognition.”

Alicia Garza, one of the founders, openly admits to being a homosexual. She claims that her “leadership and work challenge the misconception that only cisgender Black men encounter police and state violence.” Accordingly, in order to “truly understand how devastating and widespread this type of violence is in Black America, we must view this epidemic through a lens of race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.”

For a while, the umbrella group that provides tax-exempt financial status to the Black Lives Matter organization, one of the group’s “projects,” had a convicted terrorist on its board. BLM Global Network Foundation has since changed its provider for fiscal sponsorship. It is now part of Tides Center, which in turn is part of Tides Nexus, “a collection of related left-of-center grantmaking, fiscal sponsorship, and advocacy nonprofits headquartered in San Francisco, California,” according to Influence Watch.

Donors to the Tides Center include “the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and George Soros’s Open Society Foundations,” Influence Watch found. Tides Nexus, the parent organization, spent more than $517 million on left-wing causes in 2018.

August 11, 2020 (American Thinker) — I have written many times that those on the left, because they believe they are on the side of all that is right and just, are willing to commit any depravity and injustice to gain the power they need to remake America.

Most Americans, however, do not understand this about the Democrats. People believe that all Americans have only the best intentions and would never deliberately harm the nation and its citizenry merely to obtain political power.

Therefore, people can only look on with incredulity as Democrats blatantly strive to keep Democrat-controlled state economies on lockdown — and, with the help of teacher unions, keep most schools closed in an attempt to deliberately immiserate Americans and their families in the hopes that their suffering can be used against Trump.

With schools closed, it's been estimated that as many as 20 million workers will not be able to return to employment because they lack childcare, not to mention the irreparable damage the children will suffer. Combined with the lockdowns, this will only aid in ensuring a hobbled economy with which they can blame and batter President Trump to deny him a second term as president.

And now, the Democrats are deliberately backing a candidate with not only obvious diminished mental capacity, but also clear signs of dementia, despite the danger a senile president might present to the country, the world, and humanity.

The Democratic Party platform ardently adopted by "Aphasic" Joe Biden would entail an abrogation of the Constitution; a gaming of the voting system and the addition of new states (D.C. & Puerto Rico) to guarantee the Democrats perennial electoral victory; and a complete revision of America's capitalist economy, transforming it into one based on the tenets of socialism as the stout pillars of a society ruled by critical theory.

These are positions a non-diminished Joe Biden might have considered not only anathema, but also political suicide.

Yet today, out-of-control Democrats are willing to do all this damage to a more than 200-year-old nation and its people because they believe they are on the right side of history. Leftists consider their laudable goals as in service of the betterment of humanity and believe that victory "by any means necessary" is justified. When you throw off the restraint inherent in our constitutional republic, no actions are off the table.

The left's plan has many stages. Keeping economies on lockdown and schools closed may not be enough. After failing so many times in the last few years to depose President Trump, leftists are leaving nothing to chance.

The past is prelude, and the Floyd riots (or the 1619 riots, if you prefer) were merely practice sessions, war-gaming, if you will, for what will come in the weeks preceding the election.

The rioting, arson, looting, and violence, now seemingly on the wane, will be redeployed by the left with ardor in the weeks running up to November's election. If the left is to be believed, rioters are immune to COVID, allowing the Democrats to marshal Antifa, the paramilitary arm of the party, and BLM, the ideological backbone of the party, into the streets, hoping the violence will frighten away Trump voters.

In a reverse of Trump's 2016 strategy to campaign strongly in battleground states, Antifa can be expected to turn those states into actual battlegrounds by massing at every polling place in these states to threaten Trump voters and prevent them from voting.

Media, the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party, will sell it 24/7 as "mostly peaceful" organic protests expressing the will of the people.

Still, even all that might not be enough to turn the tide against the president.

Recently, a group of Democrat grandees called the Transition Integrity Project convened to war-game the election. John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's former presidential campaign chair, acted as Joe Biden in a scenario where Trump wins re-election. In this scenario, Biden refuses to concede the election.

California, Oregon, and Washington then threatened to secede from the United States if Mr. Trump took office as planned. The House named Mr. Biden president; the Senate and White House stuck with Mr. Trump. At that point in the scenario, the nation stopped looking to the media for cues, and waited to see what the military would do.

You can also expect Antifa to play a prominent part in the aftermath of a Trump victory, only with a heavier emphasis on violence.

We know what will happen with a Biden victory: either an acquiescence of Americans to a "fundamental transformation of the United States of America" or a civil war.

We need only look at what is happening today, and what Democrats are already hinting, almost 90 days out, at what they intend to do when Trump wins.

At this point, an apocalypse is probably unavoidable.

The Democrats want it that way.

August 11, 2020 ( — When I read the news headline it suddenly all seemed clear. The story reported that new positive Covid tests were attributed to “community spread.” Well of course! That’s how contagious diseases are contracted, right? They spread through the community.

But this is the first time, in our long history of fighting diseases, that we have sought to stop the spread of a contagious disease by abolishing the community.

The phenomena of social distancing, of wearing masks, of viewing every passing neighbor as a threat, of closing down shops and schools and churches — all these steps have been destructive to our communal life. But most Americans have been willing to accept the draconian terms of the lockdown, with our opinion-makers exhorting us to accommodate ourselves to a “new normal.” Why is that? I suggest that in the Western world today many people, especially among the elites, are quite willing to forfeit community life, while others are actively working to destroy it. We are witnessing — perhaps even unthinkingly participating in — the suicide of our culture.

Very early on in the course of this pandemic, Michael Pakaluk made the acute observation that the people most enthusiastic about the shutdown were, disproportionately, the same people who believe that mankind is ruining the ecosystem, that population control is an imperative, that our economic system is driven by greed, that the government is more reliable than the individual, and — above all — that staying alive and healthy is the greatest possible good. With those core beliefs already locked into their thought processes, they were quick to embrace the plan to shut down our economy, our schools and churches, our social lives. They were slow to notice the enormous social and economic costs of the shutdown, because to their way of thinking those costs could actually be benefits.

So now millions of people are unemployed and millions more are desperately lonely and bored and depressed; the rates of suicide and drug abuse and domestic violence have soared; diseases other than Covid are being undiagnosed and untreated; riots are spreading through the cities; and the social life of an entire society — the family gatherings, the children playing, the young couples dating and marrying, the parties and games and concerts — is on hold indefinitely. All this is unfortunate by any reckoning. But it may seem less tragic — it may even seem a price worth paying — if you have no love for our society’s economic and social life, no love for our culture.

Pope John Paul II was the great diagnostician of the “culture of death.” He showed us how the uglier trends in the Western world — the legalization of abortion, the breakdown in marriages, the trend toward euthanasia, the acceptance of aberrant sexuality — were produced by a steady erosion of respect for human life. By embracing contraception and divorce, our society first severed the link between sex and procreation, then invented the fiction that a permanent union can be broken without disastrous consequences. More or less deliberately, we lost the sense that we are related to our great-great-grandparents and our great-great grandchildren — that we owe something to both the ancestors we never met and the progeny we will never see.

“May you see your children’s children!” says the psalmist (128:6). The force of that joyful wish — preserved in the beautiful blessing for a Catholic wedding ceremony — is lost on a culture that thinks of children as incidental to marriage (they may or may not come, may or may not be welcome), and has trouble sorting out, after two or three generations of mix-and-match unions, which children belong to which lineage. When you no longer feel that your children are a part of you, and you are a part of your parents, you become an autonomous individual.

The culture of death has exalted that autonomy, elevating individual choice to become society’s highest value. A person’s choice is prized more highly than truth, and so a man is allowed to proclaim that he is a woman, despite the clear scientific evidence to the contrary. Choice ranks higher than life itself, and so the law now sanctions a man’s choice to end his own life. Justice Anthony Kennedy (who, by the way, identified himself as Catholic) gave full voice to this attitude, and elevated it to the level of Constitutional principle, in the 1992 Casey decision, writing: “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.”

Is that the ultimate goal in life: to be a free-floating individual, making up one’s own reality? If so, then there can be no tragedy worse than being deprived of the opportunity to make my own choices. I must be free to break any commitments, to alter any circumstances, that hold me back. I cannot acknowledge any debt to society or even to my family. I must be free.

And one more thing: I must be healthy. I cannot tolerate the risk of disease. So when an epidemic strikes (as epidemics occasionally do, from time to time through history) I must do everything possible — and you must do everything possible, too — to protect me. There is nothing more important, to me and to you, than staying alive.

That notion would be foreign to our ancestors, who had little choice but to accept the risk of illness and early death. It would be foreign, too, to all the people we regard as heroes, who willingly accepted greater risks for greater causes. In fact it is foreign to something fundamental in human nature. We take on risks every day; to risk nothing is to accomplish nothing.

So why, when this epidemic broke out, did we so quickly accept the notion that the normal functioning of our society was not worth the risk? The answer to that question has gradually become clear to me.

The first clue came when Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief arbiter of acceptable risk (and another Catholic) declined to condemn anonymous sexual encounters, even at the height of the pandemic. “You know, that’s tough,” he said, when asked about the hookup culture, “because that’s what’s called relative risk.” A “relative risk” for the sake of fleeting gratification — for an individual’s irresponsible choice — was somehow less dangerous to the public weal than a normal business transaction or a family funeral.

The next clue, a much more conclusive one, came when Dr. Fauci refused to label the massive “Black Lives Matter” protests as a threat to public health, and mayors who had banned other public meetings welcomed demonstrators to their cities. These were clear and obvious violations of “social distancing” rules and quarantine regulations, yet they were tolerated and even applauded. Why?

Now look at what those demonstrations accomplished. When they were peaceful, they were rhetorical attacks on our society’s history. When they were violent (as they often were), they resulted in the destruction of private property and public monuments. In other words, one way or another, they tore down what our society has built up.

The public meetings that build up our culture — the concerts and parades and lectures and religious rituals — are still banned or tightly restricted. The public events that tend to destroy that culture are allowed, even in flagrant disregard for the reigning emergency regulations. As Yeats put it in “The Second Coming,” (a poem that might have been written about current events):

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

By pulling down statues of explorers and war heroes, violent leftists show their contempt for our history. But they will not stop there, because the veneration of historical figures, while it is a noble display of pietas, is not the ultimate basis for a healthy culture. Far more important is the cult itself: the veneration of almighty God. So it should be no surprise that, having first taken aim at Civil War monuments, the vandals next set their sights on churches — specifically Catholic churches. If your most cherished objective is to be free of all restraints — if your battle cry is “Non serviam!” — you have ample reason to see the Church as your foe.

The question that remains is whether the Church, the People of God, will recognize the danger and mobilize before the active persecution begins and our culture is “cancelled.”

Planned Parenthood spearheading ‘pornographic’ sex ed worldwide with UN’s help

August 11, 2020 (Daily Signal) — Parents in America and around the world are waking up to the disturbing reality that their children are being subjected to a new woke form of radical sex ed called Comprehensive Sexuality Education.

Systematic sexual indoctrination would be a better description of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education programs being dished up — sometimes daily — to children in countries as diverse as Namibia, Nepal, and Nauru, and in U.S. states from Montana to Michigan to Maine.

Minnesota state Rep. Kathy Lohmer, a Republican, calls CSE “pornography,” saying: “It is something even some of my colleagues, men especially, on the House floor did not want to look at. We couldn’t show this on the 10 [o’clock] news, yet we want our fourth-grade children to be looking at this.”  

And don’t think for a minute that your state is exempt from radical Comprehensive Sexuality Education. The federal government is using your tax dollars to give Planned Parenthood organizations and their partners a total of $101 million in grants annually to implement radical, sexually graphic, abortion rights–promoting CSE programs.

“I am deeply concerned about Comprehensive Sexuality Education, or CSE, for four reasons,” says Dr. Michelle Cretella, executive director of the American College of Pediatricians, in the documentary “The War on Children: The Comprehensive Sexuality Education Agenda.

Cretella warns: “First, it sexualizes children; second, it threatens children’s health; third, it promotes a very dangerous gender ideology; and fourth, it undermines the parent/child relationship, which violates parental rights.”

The website exposes multiple egregious examples of harmful Comprehensive Sexuality Education curricula distributed both internationally and in the U.S.

The U.S. House of Representatives also is seeking to impose dangerous gender ideology on children in schools through the Equality Act. This House-passed legislation could lead to federally mandated curricula as well as controversial policies that threaten students’ safety and privacy and fairness in girls sports. Several senators are trying to pass the bill as well.

At the international level, United Nations agencies have been pushing Comprehensive Sexuality Education worldwide, especially in developing countries.

During one U.N. negotiation session, a representative of the tiny island nation of Nauru bravely protested:

UNFPA [the United Nations Population Fund] has tried to convince my country to change our positions on issues such as reproductive rights and comprehensive sexuality education. Harassing my capital or going through UNFPA’s regional office in the Pacific will not change my country’s position

In 2018, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS);  UNFPA; and the World Health Organization came out of the proverbial closet with a publication titled “International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education.”

This radical “guidance” redefines abstinence to mean not just abstaining from sex but also “deciding when and with whom to have sex.”

The International Planned Parenthood Federation is the largest provider of CSE programs worldwide, and its affiliate, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, is the largest CSE provider in the U.S.

Planned Parenthood’s international group has 65,000 service points in 170 countries, and the sexualization of children increases the flow of money to their coffers. The more that Comprehensive Sexuality Education is adopted, the more kids become customers for condoms, contraceptives, abortions, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV), and now, cross-sex hormones.

Many CSE programs that were analyzed according to the 15 Harmful CSE Elements Analysis Tool actually refer children to Planned Parenthood clinics at some point in the program, as this one for does.

Pro-lifers, listen up! Comprehensive Sexuality Education is the No. 1 tool for advancing abortion worldwide by indoctrinating the next generation in abortion and sexual rights ideology and advocacy.

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — One of the best known stories in the Bible is the incident of Jesus feeding a huge crowd with only five loaves of bread and two fish. This miraculous demonstration of love and creative power has been represented in everything from stained glass windows to Hollywood special effects.

It’s also a favorite bit of Christian imagery for atheists to debunk in their endless attempts to prove that religion is false.

“There’s nothing miraculous about it,” naysayers will insist. “Obviously, what happened was that people responded to a need of the moment. Those who had packed food for their day in the country listening to Jesus speak shared it with those who hadn’t brought along anything to eat. It may have been a nice moment of human kindness, but there was nothing supernatural about it.”

This is the sort of materialist view dismissed by Pope Pius X in his encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis (1907), in which he condemned such interpretations as a heresy he called “Modernism.”

The story is also frequently offered as evidence that Christianity is essentially a spiritual version of socialism. People who hold to that idea will say, “See? Jesus wants us to share everything we have with those less fortunate than ourselves, just as the folks in the story shared their food. That’s why government should provide for everyone’s needs.”

Coming to such conclusions requires one to make some wild leaps in logic. But due to widespread confusion about the true nature of compassion, people often make them.

Setting aside the miraculous element of Jesus’s act, if people did share their food, this would have been a matter of charity. They would have been acting voluntarily to help fellow human beings. No government was taking their goods in order to redistribute them, which is the way socialism works.

Christian charity is the antithesis of socialism. We gain merit when we take what’s ours and offer it, out of compassion, to someone in need. There is absolutely no merit in advocating that government redistribute what it acquires through taxes, confiscation, or collectivization (which are the only ways government can acquire wealth).

The Bible tells us (Genesis 3), “You will earn your food by the sweat of your brow.” St. Paul specifically makes the point (2 Thessalonians 3) that “[h]e who does no work should not eat.”

It says these things because God wishes us to work. He calls upon us to be productive, to make the world better by using our hands and our minds. And he wants us to understand that we are most gratified by the things we accomplish for ourselves, that these give meaning to life.

Yet, certain ideas, whose roots are in socialism — such as free college tuition, government-provided health care, a guaranteed minimum income (not dependent on work), and others — have gained wide acceptance, especially among the young.

Such ideas are presented as expressions of compassion. The argument is made that adopting them is a matter of basic human entitlement, of social justice, which is the only compassion socialism recognizes.

Moreover, such benefits can only be provided by society as a whole, which is to say, by government. Thus, private charitable acts, admirable as they might be, actually contradict social justice and so impede its accomplishment.

They may be meritorious in the eyes of God, but they do nothing to advance collective social action. Therefore, they are inherently anti-social.

Thus, socialism robs life of its meaning. That’s why it’s ultimately antithetical to the Gospel.

Socialism’s fruits can be seen in such countries as Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. These were all once thriving Catholic nations. Now they’re struggling (in the case of Venezuela, actually starving), bereft of freedom and hope.

Their tragic destruction should serve as a warning to us in this time, when socialist ideas and policies are being promoted aggressively (even violently) by various groups. We must speak the truth, especially to our young people. As believers, we can start by clearly conveying the lessons of the Gospel.

Those five loaves and two fish were symbols of Christ’s true compassion, not the false compassion of socialism. That was the real miracle.

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Despite insanity coming from Rome and elsewhere in the Church, hope continues as brave prelates have openly chastised and challenged their brother bishops.

With Pope Francis’s Vatican showing its hand on the matter of denying the faithful Holy Communion on the tongue, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has released a scathing warning.

On top of that, in the face of the U.K. bishops’ insistence that Catholics have a duty to take a vaccine for the coronavirus, even one tainted with abortion, U.S. bishop Joseph Strickland has reiterated that Catholics must “reject any vaccine that is developed using aborted children.”

Argentinian bishop Eduardo Taussig has announced the upcoming closure of his nation’s only orthodox Catholic seminary because the rector and other priests associated with it would not refuse seminarians and other faithful Holy Communion kneeling and on the tongue.

As LifeSite correspondent Dorothy Cummings McLean reports, Bishop Taussig, contrary to Church teaching, had demanded that priests refuse to administer Holy Communion to faithful who refuse to receive Our Lord in their unconsecrated hands and insist on their right to receive Him on the tongue.

The diocese announced that the seminary is being closed by order of the pope’s Congregation for Clergy. 

Father José Antonio Álvarez said: “In accordance with instructions from the Holy See, it has been decided to close the seminary.”

“The measure taken by the Congregation for the Clergy, which is just the dicastery of the Holy Father that has jurisdictions over these cases, takes into consideration that due to the undisciplined reaction of a good portion of the clergy of the diocese, at this moment, this diocese is not able to put together a group of teachers who will conform to the church’s discipline,” Álvarez stated, speaking of the priests continuing to permit the seminarians and other faithful to receive Holy Communion on the tongue.

A source known to LifeSiteNews told a reporter that there were 40 “good and well-formed” seminarians who now are unsure what they will do. He called the closing of the San Rafael seminary a “real disaster,” as he believes it to be “the last really Catholic seminary in Catholic Argentina.” 

Taussig, a descendant of Czech immigrants to Argentina, was appointed bishop of San Rafael by St. John Paul II in 2004. He was co-consecrated by the primate of Argentina of the time, Cardinal-Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis), and a number of other bishops.  

Reacting to the ruling with an open letter to Bishop Taussig, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, with biting sarcasm, wrote the following:

This decision is said to have been adopted, at your zealous insistence, by the Congregation for the Clergy, which considered inadmissible the refusal on the part of clerics under your jurisdiction to administer and receive the Most Holy Eucharist on the hand rather than on the tongue. I imagined that the laudable and coherent behavior of the priests, clerics, and faithful of San Rafael offered you an excellent excuse to close the largest seminary in Argentina and to disperse the seminarians in order to re-educate them elsewhere, in seminaries that are so exemplary that now they are empty.

Calling out Bishop Taussig as a modernist, Archbishop Viganò continued:

I can understand your disappointment in seeing that, despite the relentless work of ultra-modernist indoctrination that has been carried out in the past few decades, there are still courageous priests and clerics who do not place the obeisance of the episcopal court ahead of the respect that is owed to the Blessed Sacrament; and I can imagine your vexation in seeing that the lay faithful and even entire families… are following the good shepherds, of whom the Gospel says “the sheep recognize his voice,” and not the mercenaries who have “no concern for the sheep” (Jn 10: 4,13).

Pointing out that Bishop Taussig’s chosen coat of arms uses the moniker “Paternal and Fraternal Charity,” Archbishop Viganò reprimands him, saying:

I see nothing paternal about punishing priests who do not want to profane the Sacred Host, nor any form of true charity towards those who have disobeyed an inadmissible order. Charity is exercised in service of the Good and the True: if it has error as its origin and evil as its end, it can only be a grotesque parody of the virtue. A bishop who, instead of defending the honor owed to the King of Kings and praising those who strive for this noble purpose, even goes so far as to close a flourishing seminary and to publicly reprimand his clerics is not performing an act of charity but rather a deplorable abuse, for which he will be called to respond before the judgment seat of God.

Archbishop Viganò ends his letter, saying:

Together with the clerics and laity of your diocese, whom you have unjustly punished and seriously offended, I pray for you, Your Excellency, for the officials of the Holy See.


We pray for your conversion, a conversion to which we are all called, but that should no longer be deferred by those who are working not for the glory of God but against the good of souls and the honor of the Church.

Let us all pray for the seminarians and faithful of San Rafael, on whom you, Your Excellency, have declared war.

Meanwhile, LifeSite’s London correspondent Paul Smeaton reports that in the United Kingdom the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has stated that Catholics have a “duty to be vaccinated,” even if the shots are made using aborted babies.

“The Catholic Church strongly supports vaccination and regards Catholics as having a prima facie duty to be vaccinated, not only for the sake of their own health but also out of solidarity with others, especially the most vulnerable,” the letter released Thursday, July 30 states.

“We believe that there is a moral obligation to guarantee the vaccination coverage necessary for the safety of others. This is especially important for the discovery of a vaccine against COVID-19,” the bishops continue.

While the letter notes that “[t]he Church is opposed to the production of vaccines using tissue derived from aborted foetuses,” it also states that “the Church teaches that the paramount importance of the health of a child and other vulnerable persons could permit parents to use a vaccine which was in the past developed using these diploid cell lines.”

The bishops then briefly mention the 2005 Pontifical Academy for Life document “Moral reflections on vaccines prepared from cells derived from aborted human foetuses” before quoting a separate 2017 Pontifical Academy for Life statement, which asserts that “all clinically recommended vaccinations can be used with a clear conscience and that the use of such vaccines does not signify some sort of cooperation with voluntary abortion.” 

U.K. Catholic Deacon Nick Donnelly told Church Militant that “one of the cell lines being exploited in the production of the COVID-19 vaccine at Oxford University is from a healthy baby girl murdered through abortion in 1972 in the Netherlands.”

“Her kidney cells were harvested for medical research and given the dehumanizing label HEK-293. She’d probably be a 40-year-old mother with her own family by now,” Donnelly said.

“I don’t know how CBCEW can say it’s okay for Catholics to use vaccines incorporating cell lines from babies murdered through abortion,” he continued. 

“Instead, the bishops are saying not only is it morally permissible to benefit from her murder through abortion, but that its a moral obligation for the greater good.”

In an open letter published in May, Catholic clergy and laity led by former papal nuncio Archbishop Viganò and Cardinals Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Joseph Zen, and Janis Pujats said that “for Catholics it is morally unacceptable to develop or use vaccines derived from material from aborted fetuses.”

This weekend, Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas reiterated his opposition to vaccines created using cell lines from aborted babies.

“I renew my call that we reject any vaccine that is developed using aborted children,” Strickland tweeted. 

“Even if it originated decades ago it still means a child’s life was ended before it was born & then their body was used as spare parts. We will never end abortion if we do not END THIS EVIL!”

These condemned criminals accepted ‘inadmissible’ death penalty and became saints

Bishop Athanasius Schneider calls to mind some of the saints who earned their salvation through humble acceptance of the death penalty.

August 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — In the bestselling interview of Bishop Athanasius Schneider conducted by Diane Montagna, Christus Vincit: Christ’s Triumph over the Darkness of the Age (Angelico Press, 2019), His Excellency says the following about ruling out the death penalty absolutely:

Those who deny the death penalty in principle implicitly or explicitly absolutize the corporal and temporal life of man. They also deny to some extent the consequences of original sin. Those who deny the legitimacy of the death penalty also implicitly or explicitly deny the need and value of expiation and penance for sins, and especially for monstrous crimes still in this earthly life. The “good thief” who was crucified next to Our Lord is one of the most eloquent witnesses to the expiatory value of the death penalty, since through the acceptance of his own death sentence he gained eternal life and became in some sense the first canonized saint of the Church. Indeed, Our Lord said to him, “Today you will be with Me in paradise” (Lk 23:43). (p. 188)

Bishop Schneider draws our attention to a most important aspect of the discussion — an aspect, note well, that progressive or liberal opponents of capital punishment consistently ignore: its expiatory value in making reparation for sin. The neglect of this truth is perfectly consistent with the neglect of many other divinely revealed and constantly taught truths of Catholicism, such as the fact that all of our earthly sufferings are the result of sin, original and personal, and that God, as providential Lord, wills physical evils for our just punishment and especially for our conversion and purification.

His Excellency reminds us of this crucial dimension when he continues:

There are plenty of moving examples of executed evildoers and criminals who, through the acceptance of the death penalty, saved the life of their soul for all eternity. St. Joseph Cafasso is the patron of men condemned to death; his biography provides us with astonishing examples of conversions of such men. All of these examples bore witness to the truth that the short temporal life of the body is disproportionate to eternal life in heaven. (Ibid.)

Ms. Montagna asks if the bishop thinks more criminals would convert if they were allowed to live out long prison sentences rather than being put to death. His response is striking:

We have the example of a “good thief” of the twentieth century in the case of Claude Newman, a murderer who in 1943 was put on death row in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Initially an unbeliever and non-Catholic, he experienced a conversion to the Catholic faith through the power of the Miraculous Medal. He died a holy death as a devout Catholic. He bore witness to the legitimacy and to the expiatory value of the death penalty.

One can mention also the case of the Servant of God Jacques Fesch (1930–1957), a murderer who spent more than three years in solitary confinement. He experienced a profound conversion before his execution by guillotine in Paris. He left spiritually edifying notes and letters. Two months before his execution, he wrote: “Here is where the Cross and its mystery of suffering make their appearance. The whole of life has this piece of wood as its center[.] ... Don’t you think that, whatever you set out to do in the short time that is yours on earth, everything worthwhile is marked with this seal of suffering? There are no more illusions: you know with certainty that all this world has to offer is as false and deceptive as the most fantastic dreams of a six-year-old girl. Then despair invades you, and you try to avoid the suffering that dogs your heels and licks at you with its flames, but every means of doing so is only a rejection of the Cross. We can have no genuine hope of peace and salvation apart from Christ crucified! Happy the man who understands this.” On October 1, 1957, at 5:30 am, he climbs to the scaffold. “May my blood that is going to flow be accepted by God as a whole sacrifice, that every drop,” he writes, “serves to erase a mortal sin.” In his last journal entry, he wrote, “In five hours, I shall look upon Jesus!” (p. 189)

It is true that not every criminal will admit his sins and seek repentance and forgiveness from God; but it is no less true that, as Dr. Samuel Johnson famously quipped, “Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.” There is something more humane about confronting a murderer with the gravity of his crimes: “You have unjustly taken these lives, and now your life is justly required of you. You have two weeks in which to repent and prepare yourself to meet the divine Judge, of whom the earthly judge is only a faint echo.” With a ten-, twenty-, or thirty-year prison sentence, many temptations and evils are spread out in a seemingly endless stretch in front of prisoners, who can end up morally worse, or at any rate not morally better, than when they entered. Is this more humane? Only if the worst evil is physical death — which it certainly is not.

In Christus Vincit, Bishop Schneider proceeds to remind us of an episode in the life of the Little Flower:

We also know from the life of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus that, as a young girl, she adopted her “first sinner,” the murderer Pranzini, who in 1887 was sentenced to death. The saint writes in her autobiography, The Story of a Soul: “The day after his execution I hastily opened the paper and what did I see? Tears betrayed my emotion; I was obliged to run out of the room. Pranzini had mounted the scaffold without confessing or receiving absolution, and ... turned around, seized the crucifix which the priest was offering to him, and kissed Our Lord’s Sacred Wounds three times. I had obtained the sign I asked for, and to me it was especially sweet. Was it not when I saw the Precious Blood flowing from the Wounds of Jesus that the thirst for souls first took possession of me? (p. 189–90)

Pranzini was a hardened criminal who had no interest in the “consolations of religion,” but thanks to the prayers of a nun and the ministrations of a faithful priest who did not leave his side, he welcomed God’s grace at the last moment and died having repented of his evil. Even as it can be a false mercy to want to keep someone alive who sinned against the very foundations of social life, it can be a true mercy to give a criminal a radical choice between repentance and hardness, so that the seriousness of what he has done and the need to set his conscience in a right condition before death will be apparent.

The examples narrated by Bishop Athanasius Schneider also show us in the most vivid way how important prison ministry is, which offers to convicts again and again the opportunity to be reconciled to God, against whom every sin is directed (cf. Ps 50:6); it shows us that the prayer of the righteous man availeth much (cf. Jas 5:16).
