Christian wife’s case of trying to stop atheist husband’s euthanasia may go to Canada’s top court

The Canadian wife could not stop her husband’s euthanasia.

BRIDGEWATER, Nova Scotia, October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews)  Jack Sorenson’s life ended at his request by lethal injection on October 3 against his wife’s wishes. This resulted in troubling legal questions surrounding his death that have yet to be fully addressed.

Lawyers for Sorenson’s wife, Katherine, may seek leave to appeal to Canada’s top court to rule on whether the 83-year-old Nova Scotia man’s euthanasia was lawful.

Katherine, 82, went to court in July to stop her husband’s euthanasia, originally scheduled to take place on August 3.

She contended that Jack, who had Stage III chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other minor health concerns, was not seriously ill or dying, but suffered from anxiety and delusions about his medical condition, and therefore had questionable capacity to consent.

Moreover, he had had conflicting assessments of his eligibility for euthanasia, having been rejected as ineligible in April before being approved in July.

The couple had known each other for 60 years and been married for 48, but after Katherine took legal action, Jack left their home and no longer spoke to his wife.

Katherine did not know he had died at the Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg that Saturday when she got call from the funeral home telling her they had his body, CBC reported.

“When communicating with Katherine, it was sad to learn that she was not informed about her husband’s death until after the funeral home received him,” said Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, which is financing the court challenge.

In the obituary she wrote for Jack, who during his long life had been a music professor, a CBC producer, and restaurateur, Katherine asked for donations to the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition in lieu of flowers.

After weeks of being apart, her husband’s death was not a shock and she was doing “pretty well, considering,” Katherine told CBC.

“I’ve had a wonderful life with Jack. There have been, as with any marriage, lots of varying opinions between the spouses and I thought we did a pretty good job of reconciling two pretty opposite views,” she said, “until this issue came up of end of life.”

Katherine is a Christian and her husband had been an atheist since early adulthood.

Jack Sorenson was euthanized a day after three judges of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal ruled that stopping him from being lethally injected would constitute “significant harm,” and was contrary to his “fundamental right to personal autonomy and medical self-determination, according to the CBC.

Justice Cindy Bourgeois wrote the decision, which ruled that courts should not intervene in assessments made by medical practitioners. (She also clarified that there was no publication ban, even though lower courts had not identified the couple out of privacy concerns.)

(I)t is clear Parliament fully intended,” Bourgeois wrote, “provided it is undertaken in a manner consistent with the law, the determination of MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) eligibility should rest with authorized medical and nursing professionals not with judges.”

The court also ruled Katherine did not have the legal right to contest what her husband was trying to do and that her “feelings do not give her standing to challenge the determination he meets the eligibility criteria for MAID.”

Under Canada’s Bill C-14, individuals age 18 and over who are capable of consent and make a voluntary request for lethal injection can be euthanized if two doctors diagnose them as having a “grievous and irremediable medical condition.”

The law defines this as a serious and incurable illness or disability that results in an advanced state of irreversible decline in capability and causes intolerable physical or psychological suffering, and that natural death is “reasonably foreseeable.”

Katherine’s lawyers pointed out that after Jack was deemed ineligible for euthanasia in April, he then sought another assessment in July from pro-euthanasia doctors, who approved his death.

Hugh Scher, head of Katherine’s legal team, argued that “doctor shopping is a serious concern that must be addressed,” and that court or tribunal oversight are essential in those rare cases where there are multiple conflicting medical reports over the core issue of capacity, which is an essential condition of eligibility for MAID.

However, now that Jack has died, “it does beg the question whether or not the case has moot. And that's being looked at right now: Is there actually still a case?” Schadenberg told LifeSiteNews.

“In fact, the question that we were asking remains valid,” he added.

“The question we were asking is, when you have multiple assessments and you've got a couple of assessments saying, yes, he qualifies for euthanasia and other assessments saying he does not qualify for euthanasia, how then is that property determined?” Schadenberg noted.

“As it is right now, all the law requires is that there are two assessments saying he qualifies.”

Adding to the difficulty, since Parliament resumed in late September after being prorogued in AugustJustin Trudeau’s Liberal government has reintroduced Bill C-7, which will allow individuals who are not terminally ill to be euthanized.

Schadenberg, along with other critics, has warned that if Bill C-7 becomes law, Canada will have the “the most wide-open euthanasia regime in the world.”

Under the proposed Bill C-7an individual who is not dying but is deemed to have unbearable physical or psychological suffering can be lethally injected after a 90-day waiting period, he told LifeSiteNews.

Schadenberg said the EPC is committed to financing Katherine Sorenson’s case.

Those who wish to donate can go to EPCC.ca.

Dutch government set to allow doctors to kill sick children

The country’s Health Minister said doctors have shown there is a ‘need’ to actively terminate the life of ‘suffering’ children.

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – The ruling coalition government of the Netherlands is moving forward on allowing children 12 and younger to legally end their own lives in the form of state-sanctioned assisted suicide.

Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said he will draft legislation to change current rules to allow for kids to legally undergo doctor-assisted suicide with parental consent.

In an October 13 letter he wrote to the Dutch parliament, de Jonge cited a study that “shows that there is a need for active termination of life among doctors and parents of incurably ill children, who are suffering hopelessly and unbearably and will die within the foreseeable future.

DJonge claims the new rules are designed to help a small group of terminally ill children who agonize with no hope, and unbearable suffering.”

The new Dutch rule that de Jonge is drafting will lift possible prosecution doctors could face if they take additional actions, such as sedative euthanasia

NL Times report noted that the Dutch Association of Pediatrics (NVK) was one of the groups pushing for the rule change, with de Jonge saying that as a result of their support, “I want to ensure more legal safeguards for doctors who, on the basis of their professional standard, proceed with life-ending actions of children aged one to 12 years.”

Assisted suicide has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002, allowed under certain conditions such as when the patient’s suffering is unbearable or there is no prospect of improvement, and also when the patient gives consent to die

Children under age one and between the ages of 12 to 15 are already permitted to undergo state-sanctioned assisted suicide as long as the patient is terminally ill and there is parental consent.

Teens ages 16-17 do not need parental consent should they choose doctor-assisted suicide.

Currently, patients under 12 cannot ask for voluntary doctor-assisted euthanasia. Technically, a doctor could assist in the end the life of a child in the 1-12 age bracket if they are diagnosed with uncontrollable and unbearable suffering, and with parental consent, but only by having nutrition withheld to speed up death.

In 2014, Belgium became the first country to legalize assisted suicide for children.

In a Catholic News Agency report from SeptemberDutch cardinal Willem Eijk said that once a society such as his home nation allows for assisted suicide, any safeguards in place for such a law are slowly errored

“Once accepting the termination of life for a certain measure of suffering, one will always be confronted with the question of whether it should not also be allowed in suffering that is only a little bit less,” Eijk said to the CNA.

Jack Fonseca, director of political operations for Canada’s Campaign Life Coalition (CLC)said the news of the Dutch allowing for the state-sanctioned killing of kids shows the nation has lost their “moral compass.”

“What truer indicator of a debased and morally corrupt society could there be than elected lawmakers sanctioning the killing of children under the age of 12,” Fonseca told LifeSiteNews.

“Those in power in the Netherlands have gone mad, as well as the population that is tolerating this evil without so much as a whimper of resistanceThey have so lost their moral compass that they cannot even see how evil this is.”

Fonseca commented to LifeSiteNews that although suffering is a difficult reality of life, “human beings are meant to persevere and always respect the divine spark of our Creator which we see in each one of us.

Fonseca added that we must “resist the urge to snuff” out suffering “especially” when it “comes to children” who are ill.

The new Dutch rule change comes after 12 months of heated debate between the four ruling Dutch parties that form the current government in the Netherlands.

Currently, the Netherlands is governed by the four-party alliance of the Christian Democrat Appeal party, which de Jonge is a member, the more conservative ChristenUnie party, the very liberal Democrats 66 party, and the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).

According to a report in The Guardian, the Christian Democrat Appeal party and the ChristenUnie party were opposed to the new rule changes. The VDD (the party of the nation's current Prime Minister Mark Rutte) and the Democrats 66 party support the liberalizing of assisted suicide rules for young kids.

It is estimated that around 7,000 persons die annually in the Netherlands after allowing themselves to be killed by the state’s medical system.

The procedure typically involves a doctor giving a person an intravenous sedative that is followed by a drug that makes breathing difficult.

The idea of allowing one to take their own life with assistance from the state in the Netherlands has a long history

Nearly 50 years ago, Dutch Supreme Court justice Huib Drion argued in favor of giving people who had reached age 79 the means to be able to kill themselves with a poison pill.

Drion died in his sleep in 2004 at age 86, but his idea of having a poison pill available for the elderly lives on to this day, with the leftist D66 party recently pushing for such a drug

Church tribunal condemns episcopal bishop for rejecting same-sex ‘marriage’

The Episcopal Church introduced same-sex ‘marriage’ as ‘trial rites’ in 2015.

ALBANY, New York, October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — After refusing to conduct same-sex “marriages” in his diocese, William Love, the Episcopal bishop of Albany, New York, was found guilty of violating the “Discipline of the Church” and the Canon Law of the church.

At the 2018 General Convention, the Episcopal Church had made changes to the rites for same-sex “marriage” that were approved as a trial at the 2015 convention.

The new resolution, entitled B012, stripped diocesan bishops of their autonomy to prohibit homosexual “marriage”, yet still characterized such ceremonies as “trial rites.” Now, the “trial rites” only have an “opt out clause,” requiring bishops theologically opposed to same-sex “marriage” to find a bishop who would have the ceremony performed in his diocese.

In November of 2018, Love published an eight-page letter to his faithful, in which he explained that the new law would not be implemented in his diocese, since it would force him “to compromise the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

He further said that the concept of same-sex “marriage” “is in direct conflict and contradiction to God’s intent for the sacrament of marriage as revealed through Holy Scripture.”

“Sexual relations between two men or two women was never part of God’s plan and is a distortion of His design in creation and as such is to be avoided,” the bishop clearly stated. “To engage in sexual intimacy outside of marriage between a man and women [sic], is against God’s will and therefore sinful and needs to be repented of, NOT encouraged or told it is ok.”

As a result, Love was first partially restricted in his ministry in January 2019, then received charges against him in September 2019, and eventually faced a tribunal in June.

Love’s legal team argued that Love had not violated canon law, since resolution B012 was not a revision found in the Book of Common Prayer and as such held no canonical status: “It is clear from the canonical definition of Church Doctrine that no liturgical material outside the Book of Common Prayer can ever revise the Doctrine of the Church, especially when authorized merely for ‘trial use.’”

His defense thus argued that Love had allowed marriages only between a man and a woman, since such was the teaching of the Book of Common Prayer, the Catechism and the rites of Matrimony. Love said that B012 in fact “invited canonical disobedience and nonconformity to the stated Doctrine and Discipline of the Church.”

In response to the recent decision, in which he was unanimously found guilty of “failing to abide by the Discipline and Worship of The Episcopal Church, and thus violating my ordination vows”, Love warned that the result of the case “will severely impact not only me and the ministry entrusted to me as Bishop of Albany, but it will also seriously impact the life and ministry of the Diocese.”

The panel has yet to reconvene and announce what penalties Love will face.

October 14, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – In an interview with LifeSiteNews published today, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò gave his view on the attacks aimed at Judge Amy Coney Barrett because of her faith.

And in a message to Judge Barrett and all true Catholics who would serve in public office, he advised they should “bear witness to the One who shed His Blood for them,” for with that, he said, will come “the necessary graces to carry out their duties in public affairs” and also they will “be an example to their brothers and will merit an eternal reward, which is the only thing that really matters.”

Speaking of the attacks on Barrett’s faith, the former Vatican representative to the United States was not surprised at the “hatred of the world, of which Satan is the prince (Jn 12:31).” He explained: “Those who preach equality and equal rights to the point of giving legitimacy to error and vice, become intolerant when they see their own abusive power is at risk – as soon as a Catholic politician, in the name of equal rights, wants to testify to his or her own Faith in legislating and governing.

He encouraged faithful Catholics to soldier up. “With the unction of Confirmation, a Catholic becomes a soldier of Christ,” he said, warning that a “soldier who does not fight for his King but allies himself with the enemy is a traitor, a renegade, a deserter.

He concluded his response with a line from the Latin chant to Christ the King: “May the rulers of the world publicly honor and extol Thee; May teachers and judges reverence Thee.”

Three questions from John-Henry Westen to Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò

What is your opinon on Fratelli Tutti, particularly its silence regarding abortion, especially in light of what the encyclical defines as the “biggest concerns” for politicians?

Fratelli Tutti, in speaking about the concerns which should motivate the actions of politicians, mentions the “phenomenon of social and economic exclusion, with its baneful consequences: human trafficking, the marketing of human organs and tissues, the sexual exploitation of boys and girls, slave labor, including prostitution, the drug and weapons trade, terrorism and international organized crime.” [1] These are all plagues that need to be denounced, but which I believe are already recognized as such by many people. The focal point, which is much more important from the moral aspect, but not mentioned in the Encyclical, is abortion, which is tragically claimed today as a right. [2]

This deafening silence concerning the most odious crime in the eyes of God – because it is committed upon an innocent and defenseless child depriving it of life – betrays the twisted vision of this ideological manifesto that is in the service of the New World Order. Its slanted vision lays in psychologically prostrated submission to the requests of mainstream thought, while looking at the teachings of the Gospel with the myopic and embarrassed view of those who consider it unthinkable and outdated.

The spiritual and transcendent dimension is completely ignored, as are natural and Catholic morality. But what brotherhood could ever exist between people, if killing an innocent child is considered irrelevant? How can one condemn social exclusion while remaining silent on the most criminal of social exclusions, that of a child who has a right to live, to grow, to be loved and to love, adore and serve God and attain eternal life? What is the point of addressing arms trafficking, if one can be joined in brotherhood with one who dismembers a child in the womb of its mother, one who sucks the child’s brains out the instant before birth? How can one place brotherhood ahead of the horror of those who poison the sick or the elderly, who are denied any chance of participating in Our Lord’s Passion through suffering? What respect for nature can be invoked, when the gender of a person, written into our chromosomes, can be changed, or when a sterile union of two men or two women could be considered a family? Does not the destructive fury of “mother earth” apply to those who, by altering the wonderful work of the Creator, assume the right to modify the DNA of plants, animals, and human beings?

Fratelli Tutti is an encyclical that not only lacks Faith, but also Hope and Charity. The voice of the Divine Shepherd and Physician of souls does not echo in its language, but rather the rapacious wolf’s growl or the mercenary’s deafening silence (Jn 10:10). There is no breath of love either for God or for man, because in order to truly desire the good of modern man it is necessary to wake him out of his hypnotic spell of do-goodery, ecologism, pacifism, ecumenism, and globalism. In order to want the good of sinful and rebellious man, it is necessary to make him understand that by distancing himself from his Creator and Lord he will end up being a slave of Satan and of himself. No sense of brotherhood with other damned souls can remedy enmity towards God. It will not be the world nor philanthropists who will judge him, but Our Lord Himself, who died on the Cross to save him.

I believe that this very sad Fratelli Tutti represents, in a certain way, the emptiness of a withered heart, of a blind man deprived of supernatural sight, who gropingly thinks he can give an answer that he himself first ignores. I recognize that it is a sad and grave statement, but I think that more than asking ourselves about the orthodoxy of this document, we should ask ourselves what is the state of a soul incapable of feeling any surge of Charity, of allowing himself to be touched by a divine ray shining into that gloomy greyness represented by his utopian, transient dream, closed to the Grace of God.

The introit of this Sunday’s Mass sounds a warning for us:

Salus populi ego sum, dicit Dominus: de quacumque tribulatione clamaverint ad me, exaudiam eos: et ero illorum Dominus in perpetuum. Attendite, popule meus, legem meam: inclinate aurem vestram in verba oris mei. [3]

The Lord is the salvation of His people, who shall be heard in tribulation as long as they listen to His law. Our Lord tells us in no uncertain terms: “Without Me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:8). The utopia of the Tower of Babel, no matter how it may update itself and appear under the guise of the United Nations or the New World Order, is destined to collapse stone upon stone, because it is not founded on the Cornerstone who is Christ.

“Behold they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; and nothing that they propose to do will not be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” (Gn 11:4-7).

The globalist and ecumenical pacifism of Fratelli Tutti envisions an earthly paradise that lays its foundations on refusing to recognize the Kingship of Christ over societies and the entire world; on being silent about the scandal of the Cross, considered as a “divisive” rather than the only hope of salvation for humanity; on forgetting that the social injustices and the evil present in the world are consequences of sin, and that only by conforming to the will of God can we hope to foster peace and harmony among men. Human beings can be truly brothers only in Christ, by recognizing together the Fatherhood of God.

The Encyclical lacks Hope, understood as the theological virtue infused by God into the soul by which we desire the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our strength, but on the help of the Grace of the Holy Spirit. [4] Hoping that a horizontal brotherhoodcan guarantee peace and justice has nothing supernatural about it, because it does not look to the Kingdom of Heaven, it is not based on the promises of Christ, and it does not consider Divine Grace necessary, placing its trust in man who is corrupted by original sin and therefore inclined to evil. Anyone who feeds such false hopes – for example by stating that “there is no need to believe in God to go to heaven”[5] – does not perform an act of charity. On the contrary: this encourages the wicked on the path of sin and perdition, making themselves complicit in their damnation and their despair. It contradicts the very words of the Savior: “I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am He, you shall die in your sin” (Jn 8:24).

I add, with great pain, that lately the answer of the Church in the face of evil, death, sickness, suffering and injustices in the world is lacking, if not completely absent. It is as if the Gospel has nothing to say to modern man, or as if what it has to say is outdated: “I don’t want to sell useless recipes, this is the reality.”[6] One’s blood runs cold when reading these words: “God is unjust? Yes, He was unjust with His Son, by sending Him to the cross.”[7] There is no need to refute this statement; it is enough to observe that if we deny that sin is the cause of the suffering and death that afflicts humanity, we inevitably end up placing the responsibility on God, accusing Him of being “unjust” and therefore excluding Him from our very own horizon. From here we understand how the pursuit of human brotherhood is found outlined in the words of the Psalmist: “The kings of the earth rise up, and princes take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed” (Ps 2:2).

Thus the Church – or rather her counterfeit that eclipses her almost entirely – does not offer a Catholic answer anymore to the man who is hopeless and thirsting for Truth, but instead advances the scandal of pain and suffering whose root cause is sin, placing the responsibility on God and blaspheming Him as “unjust.”

Your Excellency, I imagine that you have seen how pro-life leaders in the United States are begging the Bishops to openly declare that abortion is the preeminent question during this presidential election. There have been various Bishops who have said the exact opposite and now use the points discussed in the encyclical of Pope Francis in support of their ideas. What advice would give to your brother Bishops and to the faithful?

Silence on abortion is a terrible sign of the spiritual and moral deviance in that part of the Hierarchy which denies its very own mission because it has denied Christ. And just as in abortion the mother kills her own child, whom she should love, protect, and bring forth into this earthly life, so in the present fraud, the Church, willed by God to bring forth souls to eternal life, is found killing them herself spiritually in her own womb, because of the betrayal of her own Ministers. The hatred of the enemies of Christ does not spare even His Most Holy Mother, whose divine Motherhood is hated by Satan, because through Her the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity became Man to redeem us. If we are friends of the Blessed Virgin, Her enemies are our enemies, according to what has been established by the Lord in the Protoevangelium: “I will put enmity between thee and the Woman, and between your offspring and Hers” (Gen 3:15).

I remind my brother Bishops that they were anointed with the Holy Chrism as athletes of the Faith, not as neutral spectators of the struggle between God and the Adversary. I pray that the few, courageous Pastors who raise their voices to defend the inviolable and non-negotiable principles which the Lord has established in natural law, may be joined by those who today hesitate out of fear, timidity, or a false sense of prudence. You have the “grace of state” to be heard by your flock, who recognizes in you the voice of the Divine Shepherd (Jn 10:2-3). Do not be afraid to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, just as the Apostles and the Bishops who succeeded them did not fear martyrdom.

I ask the faithful, disoriented by the silence of so many fainthearted shepherds, to raise their prayers to Heaven, invoking from the Paraclete those graces which only the Holy Spirit can instill in the most hardened and rebellious hearts: Lava quod est sordidum, riga quod est aridum, sana quod est saucium. Flecte quod est rigidum, fove quod est frigidum, rege quod est devium. Offer your sacrifices, your penances, and your sufferings in sickness for the Church and for your Pastors.

I have recently interviewed the wife of the former nominee for the Supreme Court Robert Bork, who spoke about the lack of support from the Church during her husband’s outrageous hearings; she even hinted to the fact that the attacks against him were led by the “Catholic” Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy. What is your opinion of the attacks against Judge Barrett, particularly because of her faith?

The hatred of the world, of which Satan is the prince (Jn 12:31), is the most evident disavowal of the utopian dream of Fratelli Tutti. There cannot be brotherhood among men, if it excludes the common Fatherhood of the One True God, One and Triune. Those who preach equality and equal rights to the point of giving legitimacy to error and vice, become intolerant when they see their own abusive power is at risk – as soon as a Catholic politician, in the name of equal rights, wants to testify to his or her own Faith in legislating and governing. So, in this way the highly touted “brotherhood” is realized only among the children of darkness, necessarily either excluding the children of light or forcing them to deny their own identity. And it is significant that the only requisite of this brotherhood appears to be always founded on the refusal of Christ, while it is considered impossible to have a true and holy brotherhood in the sacred bond of Charity, “in justice and holiness that proceeds from truth” (Eph 4:24).

With the unction of Confirmation, a Catholic becomes a soldier of Christ. A soldier who does not fight for his King but allies himself with the enemy is a traitor, a renegade, a deserter. Therefore, let Catholic politicians and those who hold institutional positions bear witness the One who shed His Blood for them. Not only will they receive the necessary graces to carry out their duties in public affairs, but they will also be an example to their brothers and will merit an eternal reward, which is the only thing that really matters. “Te nationum praesides honore tollant publico; colant magistri, judices, leges et artes exprimant.” [8]

[2] The only indirect mention of abortion is n. 24 of the Encyclical, in which violence that “forces [women] to abort” is denounced, but without condemning the killing of the unborn itself. The reference to the unborn child in Fratelli Tutti n. 18 is very weak and does not explicitly mention the term “abortion.” Spending just three words on the most abominable crime that involves millions of deaths every year in the world, does not change the evidence that the encyclical is literally obsessed with human solidarity in support to globalist agenda. Besides, in the contest of the US election campaign (concomitant with the publication of the papal document), an explicit condemnation of abortion would openly contradict the democratic candidate, which is strongly in favor of the abortion. I would add that the references to children seems more aimed to the Islamic families, in particular of those of the immigrants, who, according to Bergoglio, represent the demographic future of Europe.

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Twitter’s efforts to suppress a New York Post article about Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden and his son Hunter come with renewed interest over the political biases of its top officials, including a communications officer who previously worked for Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris.

The ongoing debate over free speech on social media took on new urgency Wednesday when Twitter flagged as “potentially harmful” a report in the Post about emails indicating that Hunter Biden introduced his father, then the Vice President of the United States, to Vadym Pozharskyi, a top adviser to the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, less than a year before the elder Biden openly pressured the Ukrainian government to fire a prosecutor tasked with investigating the company.

The Post’s Twitter account has been locked, and numerous accounts have found themselves unable to tweet the link to the report. Those who could were treated to a generic “this link may be unsafe” disclaimer before being able to click through to the report. Facebook communications representative Andy Stone said it was also “reducing its distribution on our platform.”

Stone’s bio reveals that he previously worked for the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee, the pro-Democrat House Majority PAC, and the offices of California Democrats Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Jerry McNerney.

Also noteworthy is Twitter senior communications manager Nick Pacilio, who previously served as press secretary for Harris. Fox News reported that Twitter insists Pacilio has no role in enforcement decisions, but the connection is noteworthy in light of his former boss’ past demands that the company suspend President Donald Trump from its platform.

Stone and Pacilio’s records are consistent with a bevy of information about the prevalent left-wing leanings within Facebook and Twitter.

Two Facebook whistleblowers came forward this summer to attest that the platform aggressively discriminates against conservatives on a global scale for the purpose of influencing election outcomes.

One provided footage of content moderators openly discussing how they would like to delete “every Donald Trump post I see on the timeline” and “delete all Republicans ... for terrorism” if they so much as post a photo “wearing a MAGA hat.” The other described witnessing moderators “deleting on average 300 posts or actioning 300 posts a day” in a way “that just targeted conservatives or favored liberals,” with personnel equating Trump supporters with violent hate groups, while expressly making an exception for overtly-hateful posts by the moderators’ LGBT allies in the name of supporting so-called “pride” month.

Twitter, meanwhile, has restricted multiple Trump tweets since May on a variety of grounds, most recently one in which the president accurately conveyed the latest update on his health from White House doctors after his bout with COVID-19. Twitter also defines referring to people by their actual sex as “hateful conduct.”

In response to the ensuing uproar, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey admitted that the company’s “communication around our actions” was “not great,” and Twitter claimed the report was censored because it contained images that “include personal and private information — like email addresses and phone numbers,” and violated the company’s prohibition on “hacked materials” (the Post denies that the emails were obtained via hacking, and Twitter does not generally suppress stories about illicitly-obtained personal information, such as President Donald Trump’s tax returns).

Various Republican lawmakers have demanded Twitter and Facebook explain themselves under oath, and Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri has called on the Federal Elections Commission to investigate whether their suppression of the story, less than a month before the presidential election, qualifies as an illegal in-kind contribution to the Biden campaign.

Viganò issues grave warning to bishops who are silent on abortion during 2020 US election

'Just as in abortion the mother kills her own child, whom she should love...so in the present fraud, the Church, willed by God to bring forth souls to eternal life, is found killing them herself spiritually in her own womb,' His Excellency says.

October 14, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – “Silence on abortion is a terrible sign of the spiritual and moral deviance in that part of the Hierarchy which denies its very own mission because it has denied Christ,” said Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the former papal representative to the United States, in an interview with LifeSiteNews today.

In a message directed to his brother Bishops in the US, the former papal representative to America says, “I remind my brother Bishops that they were anointed with the Holy Chrism as athletes of the Faith, not as neutral spectators of the struggle between God and the Adversary.” You have the ‘grace of state’, he tells the bishops, “to be heard by your flock, who recognizes in you the voice of the Divine Shepherd (Jn 10:2-3). Do not be afraid to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, just as the Apostles and the Bishops who succeeded them did not fear martyrdom.”

Archbishop Viganò prays that the good example of the few bishops and pastors in America who are speaking out for the unborn during this presidential election are an example to others. “I pray that the few, courageous Pastors who raise their voices to defend the inviolable and non-negotiable principles which the Lord has established in natural law, may be joined by those who today hesitate out of fear, timidity, or a false sense of prudence,” he says.

The archbishop who was apostolic nuncio to the United States till 2016, and worked with many of the bishops active today in the States, gives them this grave warning: “just as in abortion the mother kills her own child, whom she should love, protect, and bring forth into this earthly life, so in the present fraud, the Church, willed by God to bring forth souls to eternal life, is found killing them herself spiritually in her own womb, because of the betrayal of her own Ministers.”

The archbishop concludes by asking the faithful, who he says are “disoriented by the silence of so many fainthearted shepherds, to raise their prayers to Heaven, invoking from the Paraclete those graces which only the Holy Spirit can instill in the most hardened and rebellious heart.”

“Offer your sacrifices, your penances, and your sufferings in sickness for the Church and for your Pastors,” he added.

Viganò on Pope’s ‘brotherhood’ encyclical: ‘A manifesto in the service of the New World Order’

October 14, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) –  In a devastating appraisal of Pope Francis’ latest encyclical Fratelli Tutti (All Brothers), Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò called out its failure to take abortion seriously.

“This deafening silence concerning the most odious crime in the eyes of God – because it is committed upon an innocent and defenseless child depriving it of life – betrays the twisted vision of this ideological manifesto that is in the service of the New World Order,” he said in an interview with LifeSiteNews.

“The globalist and ecumenical pacifism of Fratelli Tutti envisions an earthly paradise that lays its foundations on refusing to recognize the Kingship of Christ over societies and the entire world.”

The former papal representative to the United States also criticizes the encyclical’s call for a brotherhood based on a worldly or ‘horizontal’ brotherhood rather than on the true brotherhood in Christ.

“(W)hat brotherhood could ever exist between people, if killing an innocent child is considered irrelevant? How can one condemn social exclusion while remaining silent on the most criminal of social exclusions, that of a child who has a right to live, to grow, to be loved and to love, adore and serve God and attain eternal life? What is the point of addressing arms trafficking, if one can be joined in brotherhood with one who dismembers a child in the womb of its mother, one who sucks the child’s brains out the instant before birth?”

Archbishop Viganò says that the encyclical’s apparent hope to bring hope to all men of the earth is misguided since, “in order to truly desire the good of modern man it is necessary to wake him out of his hypnotic spell of do-goodery, ecologism, pacifism, ecumenism, and globalism. In order to want the good of sinful and rebellious man, it is necessary to make him understand that by distancing himself from his Creator and Lord he will end up being a slave of Satan and of himself.”

Archbishop Viganò spells out “the only hope to foster peace and harmony among men” is “by conforming to the will of God.”

In the interview, Archbishop Viganò called on faithful Catholics to pray earnestly and offer sacrifices for the Church’s leaders – the hierarchy. Here the Archbishop must mean especially Pope Francis, the author of the encyclical which the Archbishop says, “represents, in a certain way, the emptiness of a withered heart, of a blind man deprived of supernatural sight.”

US bishop: Pro-life is top voting issue…and we’ll make abortion illegal, just like slavery

Bishop Coffey made his comments on ground zero of LeRoy Carharts’ late-term abortion facility in Maryland

BETHESDA, Maryland, October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Shortly before daybreak on Saturday, October 10, Bishop Joseph Coffey and Fr. Stephen Imbarrato began the concelebration of a Mass for some 50 pro-life advocates gathered in a parking lot adjacent to late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart’s facility in Bethesda, Maryland.

In his homily, Bishop Coffey, Auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, stated that each of us is an “unrepeatable, unique work of God’s creation.”  In opposing abortion and abortionists, we should “be kind, be gentle, but be persistent,” he continued.

Bishop Coffey mentioned that he prays for Carhart by name and asked everyone to do the same. He said that he prays for Carhart to experience a “St. Paul-like conversion.”  If the atheist and abortionist Bernard Nathanson, who aborted over 60,000 babies including his own child, could convert to Catholicism, so could Carhart.  It may take a miracle, said the bishop, but Catholics experience a miracle every time they attend Mass and the priest consecrates bread and wine transforming them into the body and blood of Our Lord.

In the upcoming election, the bishop continued, “we have to pray, and work, and vote accordingly.”

“There are always important issues to consider in every election, but the preeminent issue is life,” he stated. He further encouraged everyone to “never give up, never lose hope, never lose courage, and never lose the belief that someday this [abortion] will be illegal and unthinkable, just like slavery.”

At the conclusion of the Mass, the bishop led participants in a Eucharistic procession around the property of the abortion facility and blessed those attending.  He then moved the group to a nearby area where the rosary was said for an end to abortion.

The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is evil in every case.  Cathy Roth, the primary organizer of this 13th monthly ceremonial, said she was moved to do so because an intrinsic evil must be opposed both temporally and spiritually.  To overcome it requires public witness and prayer, and in special circumstances the Mass and Eucharistic processions.

LeRoy Carhart euphemistically calls his business CARE, an acronym for Centers for Abortion & Reproductive Excellence.  The term can easily mislead an angst-filled woman.  He advertises “safe and compassionate” abortions up to 35 weeks gestation.  In 2013, Carhart aborted the 33-week-old unborn child of Jennifer Morbelli.  Just hours after leaving his facility, Morbelli was rushed to the emergency room of a nearby hospital where she died of abortion-related complications.

Bishop Coffey has been an advocate for the unborn for over 45 years.  As a youngster, following the passage of Roe v. Wade, his parents often took their nine children to pro-life demonstrations.  After college, he joined the rescue movement before discerning his priestly vocation.  Now, having served almost 20 years as a military chaplain and being consecrated a bishop, he is once again active in pro-life activities.

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have announced their intent to subpoena Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and possibly Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg so they can explain why bombshell reports of corruption among the Biden family published by the New York Post are being censored on their platforms.

After spending the morning at confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Senators Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley told reporters that they believe Big Tech is “interfering” in the US election by blocking the stories, which purport to show that members of Joe Biden’s family were engaged in shady dealings in Ukraine and China.

The blocking of the stories caused massive outrage on social media. Hundreds of conservative and Republican activists and lawmakers accused Twitter of blatant censorship and even making an “in-kind donation” to the Biden campaign. LifeSite’s account was also barred from sharing the reports.

Some mainstream media figures defended the move, arguing the reports are simply part of a “Russian disinformation” campaign and that Twitter and Facebook were right to ban them.

Senator Hawley, a first-term Senator from Missouri who is seen as a possible presidential candidate in 2024, characterized the decision to block the stories as an “attempt to rig an election … by monopolies.”

“Twitter and Facebook … are both engaged in censorship,” he added. “They should answer to the American people.”

Senator Cruz said Twitter and Facebook are “actively interfering in this election in a way that has no precedent in the history of our country.”

During an appearance on Fox News, Republican Senator Tom Cotton echoed his colleague’s remarks. Speaking with host Maria Bartiromo, Cotton declared that “winter is coming” for “Big Tech oligarchs.”

Today, the official Twitter account of President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign was locked after attempting to share a New York Post article on Biden and allegations of corruption. Previously, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany had been locked out of her account for the same reason.

LifeSite has been covering censorship of pro-life, pro-family, and conservative voices on social media for months. Our original series, Uncensored: Big Tech vs. Free Speech, provides multiple examples of Twitter, Facebook, and others spying, manipulating, and censoring users. Click here to learn more.

Florida bishop: Voting pro-life ‘is not a matter of imposing a belief’

Bishop Felipe Estévez urged his faithful to form their consciences properly before the upcoming election.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida, October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Bishop Felipe Estévez told the faithful of the diocese of St. Augustine, Florida, that voting pro-life doesn’t mean imposing one’s religious convictions on others.

“It is not a matter of imposing a belief, but of being committed to the truth about human life, which, as biological science confirms, begins at conception,” he wrote in a letter dated October 7. “Those who argue otherwise are not committed to reason, but the false belief that there are some human beings not deserving of the protection of our laws.”

“Pope Francis has made it clear that if we fail to protect life, no other rights matter,” he continued. “He also said that abortion is not primarily a Catholic or even a religious issue: it is first and foremost a human rights issue.”

The letter, which all pastors of the diocese will read to their congregations on Sunday, November 1, is meant to help the faithful form their conscience on voting responsibly. Estévez singled out abortion as the preeminent threat to life for voters to consider.

The bishop cited the Declaration of Independence’s affirmation of the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

According to Estévez, the Declaration’s writers placed life first deliberately. “That they were written in this order was no mistake — even the Founding Fathers knew that the right to life surpassed all others in importance: without the right to life, none of the other rights could be protected. The right to life was, and is, preeminent.”

He reminded the faithful that “issues of life are under attack,” mentioning permissive abortion and euthanasia laws that threaten the unborn, the vulnerable, the disabled, and the elderly. These “direct attacks on innocent human life, are all intrinsically evil — always and everywhere profoundly immoral,” he wrote. He proceeded to focus on abortion as the preeminent threat to life, stressing that “it is first and foremost a human rights issue.”

Against those who claim that “the Church is promoting single-issue voting,” he argued, “The Church will always act to promote the dignity and value of every human life from conception to natural death … We seek to promote a Culture of Life through our teaching and our ministries, some of which are threatened by the extreme positions taken by some on issues of life and the family.”

The bishops of Florida have also compiled a Presidential Candidate Comparison chart, showing where Donald Trump and Joe Biden stand on some of the issues that should be important to Catholics. The positions of each candidate on abortion are listed first. Trump’s commitment to putting pro-life justices on the Supreme Court and his 2017 law allowing states to restrict Title X funding to abortion providers is contrasted with Biden’s promise to codify Roe v. Wade and to revoke the 2017 law.

Trump’s COVID advisor: Lockdown architects ‘should be held accountable’

‘History will record the faces of the public health expertise as some of the most sinful, egregious, epic failures in the history of public policy,’ said Dr. Scott Atlas.

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Dr. Scott Atlas, a recently appointed advisor to President Trump’s Coronavirus Task Force, said the architects of the COVID-19 lockdowns “should be held accountable for what they did.”

In a Fox News interview yesterday, Atlas outlined the enormous detriments to public health that result from lockdowns. He criticized those who were advocating for more lockdowns to help prevent the spread of the virus, saying they were “simply out of touch with average Americans.”

“Prolonged lockdowns are a complete disaster,” said Atlas. “People have been killed by people who want prolonged lockdowns.”

Atlas pointed to data regarding the hidden effect of lockdowns upon people’s health.

“Forty-six percent of the most common types of cancers were not diagnosed during the lockdown,” he observed. This means that as a result, “people will present with much later, more widespread disease.”

Out of those scheduled for chemotherapy, only half appeared for their appointments, meaning that “650,000 Americans” missed crucial treatment. The reason for this, Atlas said, is purely “out of the fear instilled by our so-called public health experts.”

Atlas referred to the effect the lockdowns were having on children and young adults. Just as a result of closing the schools, the number of child abuse cases has increased dramatically, with “more than 200,000 cases of child abuse not reported during the two months of spring school closures.”

A CDC report showed that “one out of four young college-aged Americans have contemplated killing themselves during the month of June,” Atlas said. “This is completely off the rails.”

But he was even more scathing with regard to the proponents of lockdowns, whom he accused of having committed crimes against humanity.

“History will record the faces of the public health expertise as some of the most sinful, egregious, epic failures in the history of public policy,” Atlas stated.

“They have killed people with their lack of understanding and their lack of caring about not just the impact of cases of COVID-19, a virus that the overwhelming majority of people do well in.”

The White House advisor distinguished between COVID-19 policies and their actual outcomes. “They never cared to considered the impact of the policy itself,” he said, “and the policy itself has been a complete epic failure, and honestly some people say a crime against humanity — these people should be held accountable for what they did.”

President Donald Trump repeatedly warned about preventative COVID measures being more harmful than the disease itself. In March, the president famously tweeted, “We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself.”

After being discharged from Walter Reed Medical Center earlier this month, where he had received treatment for the virus, Trump urged people not to be afraid: “Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life.”

The Great Barrington Declaration, released on October 4 and already signed by over 500,000 doctors, medical professionals and citizens, warns that “[c]urrent lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health”, with the effects being both physically and mentally damaging to society at large.

Vatican issues coin of mother carrying ‘earth in her womb’ one year after Pachamama scandal

ROME, Italy, October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — The Vatican issued a coin depicting a mother carrying the earth in her womb. The issue of the coin comes almost one year to the day when the idol Pachamama was worshipped in the Vatican gardens in the presence of Pope Francis as part of the opening ceremony of the Amazon synod.

“The Vatican City State Mint will issue a 10 euro silver coin made by Maestro Oldani, depicting a mother carrying the earth in her womb, to whom we owe care and love as if it were a daughter, with long ears of wheat in her hair, in a reference between past and future that becomes timeless, and therefore eternal,” states the official description of the coin.

“The celebration of life on earth is a commitment to take care of the planet, a project to which the Church intends to offer its support, a grandiose and complex work that aims: to promote international action to guarantee everyone a future, the food that is needed, both in quantity and quality, so that economic advancement may be accompanied with social development, without which there is no real progress.”

Various media outlets, including the news website owned by the German bishops, made a connection between the coin and the Pachamama statues used in the context of the Amazon synod last year, even though the appearance of “Mother Earth” on the coin differs from the statues used in 2019.

“The coin recalls the Pachamama statues set up at the Amazon synod in the previous year, which according to the prefect of the Vatican communication dicastery, Paolo Ruffini, ‘stand for life, fertility and mother earth’ and should bring the culture of the Amazon region also objectively to the synod,” wrote katholisch.de.

In the fall of 2019, Alexander Tschugguel, a young Austrian Catholic, had thrown a number of the controversial Pachamama statues into the Tiber in Rome after they had been prominently featured in a church in Rome for days.

Similar statues had also been used in a religious ceremony in the Vatican gardens on October 4, 2019. Even Pope Francis blessed one of the statues. At the ceremony, people were bowing down to the ground worshiping the statue. Additionally, the Pope prayed in front of a Pachamama statue at St. Peter’s Cathedral on October 7 and then accompanied it in procession into the synod hall.

The Pope confirmed later that the statue was called “Pachamama” and apologized for the Pachamama statues being thrown into the Tiber river.

Tschugguel himself tweeted earlier today, “We cannot buy those coins and throw them all in the Tiber, we have to fight this on a spiritual level! And we fight it by publicly opposing this #idolatrousness! #Staycatholic #staytrue #fightevil!”

Tschugguel related recent societal ills to the Pachamama ceremony.

“We are currently going through a terrible year. 2020 is the year of #Corona, #BLM + #ANTIFA riots and violence, #Euthanasia introduced in many countries, #abortion pills made legal or more easy accessible in many countries,” he explained.

“Migration problematics everywhere. This all started or got worse with last years [sic] #Pachamama ‘worship’ in the #Vatican gardens. If you venerate pagan idols no wonder that terrible things are going to happen. We all knew it and still know it! And now the #UFN releases 2 new coins to remember this terrible #heresy? Catholics resist!”

In response to the ceremonies in the Vatican Gardens, Bishop Athanasius Schneider at the time called on all Catholics — bishops, priests and laity — to offer acts of reparation, protest and correction for the use of the Pachamama statues, which he called a “new golden calf.”

In an open letter forcefully condemning the use of the Pachamama statue at the Amazon Synod in the Vatican, Bishop Schneider wrote, “In front of the eyes of the entire world and in the presence of the Pope, there were conducted clear acts of religious adoration of symbols and statues of the pagan, indigenous, South-American religions, the so-called ‘Pachamama.’”

“Such conduct of the highest Church authority which does not only not forbid the symbols of pagan religions and their worship, but, rather, even justifies them, causes a great damage for the salvation of souls, because thereby the First Commandment is being undermined and in practical terms is being rescinded,” Schneider said.

Pope Francis seemed to double down on the claim voiced by a number of Catholics that there was nothing wrong with the statues in section 78 of his post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Querida Amazonia, published earlier this year.

In it, Pope Francis stated that people should “not be quick to describe as superstition or paganism certain religious practices that arise spontaneously from the life of peoples.” In section 79, the Pope continued that it is “possible to take up an indigenous symbol in some way, without necessarily considering it as idolatry,” adding that a “myth charged with spiritual meaning can be used to advantage and not always considered a pagan error.”

Pro-life filmmaker: ‘I wanted to devote my life to defending the vulnerable’

Jason Jones’ new documentary follows Super Bowl champion Benjamin Watson’s journey to find out the truth about abortion.

LOS ANGELES, California, October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Movie to Movement is a non-profit organization using mass media to promote a culture of life, love and beauty. “The most vulnerable members of the human family were abandoned to violence, and so I wanted to devote my life to defending the vulnerable,” Movie to Movement’s founder and president Jason Jones told LifeSiteNews.

A new documentary just released by Movie to Movement endeavors to reunite Americans, following former NFL tight end and Super Bowl champion Benjamin Watson’s journey to find out the truth about abortion.

For more than a decade, the organization has produced pro-life films like Bella (2006) and Crescendo (2011), which encourage viewers to “stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable people in the world.”

“The best way to promote solidarity is through film and storytelling, because, as film critic Roger Ebert said, films are ‘like a machine that generates empathy,’” Jones explained.

Since its founding, the movement has used film to promote solidarity in action. Movie to Movement sent copies of their award-winning film Bella to crisis pregnancy centers to encourage undecided women to choose life for their babies, and potentially place their babies for adoption.

“The women chose life and to give their babies up for adoption because they empathized with the character Nina, and that was something that the pregnancy centers had really been able to gain before,” Jones said.

In a similar vein, Movie to Movement sponsored a red carpet premiere with celebrities for foster children in Hawaii when they released Running for Grace in 2018.

“At first, the kids didn’t know it was for them. They were afraid to step on the red carpet. But, once they walked on the carpet, they were so excited, “Jones shared. “They posed for pictures on the carpet, and they were really enjoying themselves. We wanted to show them that, one day, they can be a pillar in their community.”

Just last month, Movie to Movement released their new documentary, Divided Hearts of America, which “seeks to remind our nation that Black lives matter because Black lives are sacred,” Jones said.

“We set out to make the movie two years ago, and we knew that everything would be ripping apart at the seams when we were ready to release it,” he added.

“[The United States] was founded on the dignity and vision of the human person — that man has certain unalienable rights given to us by God … The republic becomes divided when we fail to live up to that founding principle, and it falls when we deny that principle,” he explained.

Roe v. Wade denied that [founding] principle. Our country can’t stand 40 more years, let alone 3 more years.” Jones further said.

The film endeavors to reunite Americans as it follows Benjamin Watson’s journey to find out the truth about abortion — a heated topic since the Supreme Court issued its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, which decriminalized abortion across the nation.

Divided Hearts of America also attempts to answer the question, “Can the most divisive issue of our time actually bring us back together again?”

Tucker Carlson: Twitter acts ‘exactly as the Chinese government does’ in suppressing news

The suppression of a New York Post article on the Bidens 'was mass censorship on a scale that America has never experienced in 245 years, and it's a threat to all of us.'

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Twitter’s efforts Wednesday to suppress a New York Post article about Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden and his son Hunter mark a “dark moment” for freedom of the press, Fox News host Tucker Carlson declared in his evening monologue.

The ongoing debate over free speech on social media took on new urgency Wednesday when Twitter flagged as “potentially harmful” a report in the Post about emails indicating that Hunter Biden introduced his father, then the Vice President of the United States, to Vadym Pozharskyi, a top adviser to the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, less than a year before the elder Biden openly pressured the Ukranian government to fire a prosecutor tasked with investigating the company.

The Post’s Twitter account has been locked, and numerous accounts have found themselves unable to tweet the link to the report. Those who could were treated to a generic “this link may be unsafe” disclaimer before being able to click through to the report. A Facebook representative said it was also “reducing its distribution on our platform.”

“This was mass censorship on a scale that America has never experienced in 245 years, and it's a threat to all of us,” Carlson said Wednesday evening. “Democracies only function when there is a free exchange of information between citizens. We no longer have that.”

“They didn't apologize for doing this,” Carlson said. “They didn't bother to make up reasonable-sounding justifications for it. They just did it, exactly as the Chinese government does. These are monopolies. They have all the power, you have none. They don't have to care about what you think and they don't.”

“You can see why Facebook and Twitter don't want to allow you to read it,” Carlson continued. “If Joe Biden met with Burisma executives at the request of his son for the profit of his own family, it becomes very clear that Joe Biden's previous denials were lies. Just last year, Joe Biden was telling us he had no idea what his son was doing for Burisma.”

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – A recent Gallup poll analysis suggests a radical difference in the perspectives on the coronavirus between Republicans and Democrats.

The poll was conducted primarily to gauge the difference between men’s and women’s attitudes and behaviors towards coronavirus guidelines, but also shows a growing divide between Republicans and Democrats.

The divide between conservative and liberal voters’ attitudes was noted in the early stages of the crisis, with The Atlantic journal publishing a March 20 article entitled ‘Red and Blue America Aren’t Experiencing the Same Pandemic.

Image
Source: https://news.gallup.com/opinion/gallup/321698/covid-responses-men-women.aspx

A June Pew Research study showed that Republicans and those who lean Republican reported being more comfortable doing everyday activities than their liberal counterparts. North of the border, the Canadian Angus Reid Institute found a similar disparity between Canadian conservatives and liberals.

The greatest gaps between Republicans and Democrats in the most recent Gallup survey analysis are found in attitudes to indoor mask wearing and in readiness to return to normal. Whereas 90% or more of Democrat voters reported always wearing masks indoors when unable to social distance, only 40% of men and 56% of women identifying as Republican reported doing so. Very few liberals reported being ready to return to normal. A mere 5% of male and 3% of female Democrats reported such readiness. In contrast, over half of Republicans, both men and women, would be willing to resume normal activities.

Closing schools hindered herd immunity, could lead to more COVID deaths overall: new study

Lockdown measures, such as closing schools, likely prolonged the epidemic by preventing the virus from naturally moving through low-risk populations and building herd immunity.

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – A recent study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that the closing of schools in response to the novel coronavirus could actually increase overall deaths resulting from the disease.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh reevaluated a model produced by the Imperial College London earlier this year that prompted the extensive government lockdown measures, including the closing of schools, implemented in the U.K., as reported by The Sun.

Considering the question of how such school closings would impact the spread of the virus, the study found that “school closures and isolation of younger people would increase the total number of deaths, albeit postponed to a second and subsequent waves.”

Though the lockdowns were “highly effective at reducing peak demand for intensive care unit (ICU) beds,” the researchers explain, these measures “also prolong the epidemic” by preventing the virus from naturally moving through low-risk populations and building herd immunity which then serves to protect the vulnerable, including the “older age groups.”

To this end, the study also shows that limiting social distancing to those over 70 would be more effective at reducing the number of deaths than the general social distancing of the entire population.

The researchers thus conclude that “the somewhat counterintuitive results that school closures lead to more deaths are a consequence of the addition of some interventions that suppress the first wave and failure to prioritise protection of the most vulnerable people.”

This University of Edinburgh study is published on the heels of the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD) which was authored by three highly qualified epidemiologists from the universities of  Harvard, Oxford and Stanford, and at the time of this writing co-signed by over 9,600 medical and public health scientists, 25,500 medical practitioners and 455,000 concerned citizens.

The Declaration  expresses “grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies” and recommends an approach they refer to as “Focused Protection.”

As supported by the results of the Edinburgh study, the Declaration’s “Focused Protection” calls for allowing “those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk.”

While emphasizing vigilance in protecting the vulnerable, the GBD classifies school closings as “a grave injustice” and asserts that “those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal,” while incorporating “simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick.”

“Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.”

Defending their position on a recent episode of the Ingraham Angle, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford was asked how to respond to those who are “scoffing at the idea of herd immunity” and reaching a level of immunity that allows communities to open-up and return to normal.

Bhattacharya replied “Denying herd immunity is like denying gravity.  Gravity exists and herd immunity exists … The question isn't about herd immunity really, the question is how do you safely get there.  The focused (protection) strategy that we are proposing where you protect the vulnerable and let people live their lives will get us there more quickly with less loss of life and less damage to other aspects of public health that get ignored.”

DALLAS, Texas, October 15, 2020 (NIFLA) — Raven Henson is no stranger to challenges. So, when COVID-19 hit, she was able to make the best of the circumstances.

Raven and her husband Cole recently went through hurdles with the City of Garland, Texas, and their Planning Commission and City Council about the Henson’s decision to transform their house into a pregnancy center, as NIFLA previously reported last year.

The city’s final decision was made on December 3, 2019. Thankfully, it was decided that plans for the center would be allowed to move forward.

Raven said a lot of renovations were needed for the house to become a center. However, prior to the hearing they weren’t able to do any work because the city had not approved the use of the location.

After the December 3 hearing, they were able to complete a sunroom addition to the house, and poured concrete for the seven parking spaces that the City required. They continued to make progress up until February, “and then COVID hit!” Raven said.

Dallas had a mandatory stay-at-home order, so all work towards getting the pregnancy center up and running such as remodeling came to a stop. In Raven’s words, “it just really put everything to a hold.”

Raven and her family wondered what they could do to help their community, because people were afraid to leave their houses, and they live in a low-income suburb of Dallas, so funds were tight for people.

The Hensons reached out to the local food pantry and asked what the needs in the community were. Raven said that many in her community were experiencing job losses, especially because a lot of blue collar and domestic workers like housekeeping trades came to a halt.

Raven also noted that they have seen firsthand the people being impacted, and it’s the poor. “These people are struggling and suffering,” she observed.

Raven’s center had a lot of diapers, wipes, and formula on hand, so they asked the local food pantry if they had a need for any of those items. The center director and her husband got proactive and made a sign and flyers as well as called the local WIC office. Thanks to these efforts, the pregnancy center “became an essential location for diapers, wipes, and formula,” she explained. They also prayed for people and gave out bibles. Raven added that the center served well over 300 families from March through August of this year.

“We’ve really been able to experience the highs and lows of COVID through people,” Raven commented. She also shared that these efforts opened up an opportunity to talk about Jesus, especially with churches shut down. Raven added, “in [a] crisis, people want prayer.”

The people in their community who weren’t already part of a church didn’t have an outlet at all. Raven and her family were grateful they were able to minister to people who had no access to ministry during the pandemic.

Along with their distribution of diapers, wipes, and formula, Raven and her husband also housed a single mother with three children who was expecting her fourth child. She was sleeping in her car and needed a place to stay, so the Hensons decided to take them in.

“For us it seemed like a no-brainer … How could we not do that?” The mother and her children stayed with the family from April to July. “It’s been an interesting year,” Raven noted. “It’s not at all what we thought we’d be doing, this time last year.”

Raven said that they had originally anticipated that their center’s huge renovation project would be done by now. Once the renovations are completed and they can move forward with staffing and administrative work, the facility will finally be ready. The renovation project should be completed in December, and their desire is to hit the ground running in January.

“We are in desperate need of a medical director,” Raven remarked, adding that they need a pro-life physician who has a heart for this work. The center already has an ultrasound machine.

“Things are looking up, we’re excited about getting this project done so we can move forward with that,” Raven said.

The final project that the Hensons need to finish is renovating their garage. The Hensons have been living in the house that will become the center, but the rooms they are staying in now will be converted into clinical rooms. So, the Hensons are moving out of the 100-year-old, 3,000 square foot home, and into the 750 square foot garage. But first, the garage needs work such as plumbing, framing and sheetrock for walls.

NIFLA leadership fully supports Raven Henson and her goal of serving women and children in her community. We will continue to monitor the situation and share updates while providing assistance in any way we can. We would also like to encourage our supporters and friends in the pro-life community to pray for Raven, her family and Living Hope Solutions — especially in the coming months as they prepare for their center’s opening. Please visit www.livinghopesolutions.org to learn more about Raven’s mission and how you can help.

Doctor chillingly reveals how to coerce kids to accept legal killing of sick mom or dad by assisted suicide

To help the children become comfortable with what is going on, the doctor shows them her killing equipment such as syringes and IV supplies), stating that she tells them that she has ‘a tray with the things that I will use to help your loved one die’

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Assisted suicide and euthanasia have been perpetually in the news these past few months. The Irish parliament is considering legalization. The Trudeau government is set to radically expand access to assisted suicide. The Netherlands has been considering permitting those who feel that their lives are “completed” to kill themselves with the assistance of medical professionals. And worse, euthanasia for children between the ages of 1 and 12 will soon be de facto legal in the Netherlands, as well.

Despite the dire nature of these developments, many pro-lifers have a much harder time responding to suicide activists and euthanasia advocates than they do rebutting abortion activists. Abortion kills a helpless human being, pitting the strong against the weak. Assisted suicide is more complicated, because often (although not in the case of infants and children who are euthanized) it involves an explicit request from someone who wants to be killed. In short, the lines between the perpetrator and the victim are far fuzzier with euthanasia and assisted suicide than they are with abortion.

I’ve addressed those arguments many times in this space, and so I won’t relitigate the fundamental issues with consent as a standard for assisted suicide again. But every so often, we are reminded how disturbing all of this is—the government funding and facilitating the suicide of citizens. Recently, I came across a paper published in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of British Columbia, one of Canada’s most prestigious universities. Written by Toronto doctor Susan Woolhouse, it details her advice for “Preparing children for the medically assisted death of a loved one.”

Woolhouse writes that she has “had the privilege of being involved in over 70 assisted deaths” as either “an assessor or provider.” The average age of those being dispatched, she writes, is 72. Most of the time, the doctor kills the patient in the presence of adults, often their grown children or grandchildren. But one day, she says, “I received a referral for a 40-year old man, and I realized how ill prepared I was to support a family with young children through MAID. Yet, instinct told me that involving children in the MAID process of their loved one was possibly one of the most important and therapeutic experiences for a child.”

Let’s pause here for a moment to clarify what she is saying: That having children witness the suicide of a dying parent or relative is “therapeutic.” This is not, as she states later, the same as being present at a deathbed from natural causes. This is being present to witness the life of a loved one being cut short by lethal injection, at their own request. That is fundamentally different.

Through her research, Woolhouse says she has eight “tips” for preparing children for witnessing doctor-assisted suicide. For example, she advises families to have the children present. She also advocates for open conversation about death with children—although she warns that they must be given “honest, compassionate and non-judgemental information about MAID.” In short, suicide must be presented as a good choice. If that is done, she writes, “there is no reason to think that witnessing a medically assisted death cannot be integrated as a normal part of the end of life journey for their loved one. If the adults surrounding them normalize MAID, so will the children.”

In other words: Normalize suicide-by-doctor as a valid death, and children will accept it as normal. Even if it is their loved one who is being killed before their eyes. And make no mistake, this is not simply incendiary rhetoric. That is, quite literally, what is happening when someone receives a doctor’s assistance in committing suicide. Suicide should never be normalized. It is heartbreaking that such an obvious thing needs to be stated.

Woolhouse writes that it is important to explain to children that the two options facing the family member choosing assisted suicide are a painful death or a painless one, which is not true in many instances (and will certainly not be true once the Trudeau government has completed their expansion of Canada’s euthanasia regime.) This, of course, also ignores the fact that in some cases the children and other family members are being robbed of more time with their loved one, something that has already caused great bitterness in those left behind. Consider this gut-wrenching photo in The Guardian of a Dutch woman who chose to be euthanized at 76, lying in an open casket. Pressed tenderly into her lifeless hands was an open letter from her son, written after her death, explaining how upset he was by her decision. He wanted more time with Mom. She left anyway.

Perhaps the most chilling part of Woolhouse’s paper was “Tip 6: Explain exactly what you are going to do and why.” To help the children become comfortable with what is going on, she writes, “[o]ffer to show your equipment (syringes, stethoscope, IV supplies). For example: ‘I have a tray with the things that I will use to help your loved one die. These include medication and syringes. I am going to leave them on the table and if you would like to look at them you can. I will stand beside the table and you can ask me any questions.” Read that over once more and try not to shudder.

And then there is Tip 7: ‘Explain what they will see/hear/feel when the body dies.’:

Use clear language and avoid euphemisms. Remember, children are literal thinkers. Use the terms death, dying, dead and died. If you tell them that their mother is asleep, they might expect her to wake up. Here is what I say: “I am going to give your [loved one] medication over a period of about ten minutes. This medication will make her very look very tired and then she will very quickly go into a coma. This means that she will no longer be able to hear, see or feel any pain. You might hear strange breathing sounds, however these do not cause her any pain. Her skin will get colder and maybe even change colour. She will stop moving her body. Her heart will eventually stop beating and this means that her body has died. When a body dies, it can no longer see, feel pain, or hear. It can’t ever be fixed.” Note that once a person has died, I do not use the loved one’s name when referring to the body so as to help children understand that their loved one is no longer alive. For example: “Your mom was really special to you. I know you are sad that your mom died. Would you like to spend more time with the body?”.

Tip 8 offers Woolhouse’s final advice: “Regardless of whether or not they have been present for MAID, children can be given the option of having time with the body after their loved one has died. Seeing and feeling that their loved one is not breathing and there is no heartbeat can be helpful in order to understand the permanence of death, especially for young children. Children also appreciate being given the opportunity to have ways to say goodbye, and can make crafts for their loved ones to have with them during their assisted death. A great idea given to me by Andrea Warnick, a national leader on children’s grief, was to make a ‘Hug’ to wrap around their loved one as they die.”

That nation after nation is reclassifying suicide as healthcare is horrifying enough. That we are now attempting to normalize the suicide of loved ones for children should force us to realize just how sick we have become. This paper does not simply describe how to walk children through the suicide of their mother or father. It describes the suicide of our terminally sick civilization, which we are all currently witnessing. It tears at the heart to imagine a child toying with the tools the doctor will use to end the life of her parent, asking innocent questions as if this were a “compassionate” thing to do—as if Mom or Dad were a household pet to be put down when suffering. This is a fundamental rejection of our very humanity, and we should flee from it as fast as we can.

Jonathon’s new podcast, The Van Maren Show, is dedicated to telling the stories of the pro-life and pro-family movement. In his latest episode, he interviews Marjorie Dannenfelser from the Susan B. Anthony List who tells Van Maren that this election is crucial for the pro-life movement. Dannenfelser warns listeners that if the Democrats win, it will have a generational impact, as the left will fight to take away the core principles of our nation's founding.

Sorry Netflix, but you don’t get to lecture Americans on moral understanding

The company’s CEO, Ted Sarandos has dug in his heels and refused to apologize for the scandal caused by the Netflix movie 'Cuties', which features pre-teen girls performing grossly sexual dance moves.

October 15, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) —Rather than apologize for the scandal caused by the Netflix movie “Cuties,” the company’s CEO, Ted Sarandos has dug in his heels, blaming American viewers rather than taking responsibility for the content.

As reported by Deadline, Sarandos said, “It’s a little surprising in 2020 America that we’re having a discussion about censoring storytelling. It’s a film that is very misunderstood with some audiences, uniquely within the United States.”

He continued, “The film speaks for itself. It’s a very personal coming-of-age film. It’s the director’s story, and the film has obviously played very well at Sundance without any of this controversy and played in theaters throughout Europe without any of this controversy.”

What a telling statement.

First, Sarandos is surprised that, “in 2020 America,” there is outrage over the sexual exploitation of young girls.

Is this supposed to be something we graduate from? Should our concern for the wellbeing of children dissipate as the decades go by? Does the passing of years lessen our pain when we see young girls gyrating in grossly sexual dance moves? Is this something that should no longer bother enlightened Americans? Should sexual morality be consigned to the Stone Age?

Second, we did not misunderstand the movie.  We get the fact that the movie speaks against the sexual exploitation of children. But, as we have stated repeatedly, you do not sexually exploit children to convey the message that sexually exploiting children is wrong.

As I wrote on September 18, “The Babylon Bee headline is satirical, but, based on the logic of Netflix, it might as well be true: ‘New Netflix Movie Actually Murders Puppies To Teach That Murdering Puppies Is Bad.’ Or, to move from satire to reality and create our own headline, ‘New Netflix Movie Actually Exploits Young Girls Sexually To Teach That Sexually Exploiting Young Girls Is Wrong.’” (For my previous articles on the movie, see here and here.)

Third, the fact that the movie played well at Sundance, which no one points to as a bastion of high moral standards, is totally immaterial. As Indie Wire noted (and I previously cited), “The Sundance Film Festival has been shocking audiences — and launching careers — for years.” An early Sundance winner was the 1989 movie “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.”

So much for “Cuties” provoking no such controversy at Sundance. That would be like saying, “The Zombie Film Festival watched the latest episodes of ‘The Walking Dead,’ and really enjoyed the shows. No one said a word about the violence and the gore.”

Third, it is instructive that Sarandos compared the reaction to “Cuties” in Europe to the reaction in the United States.

Thank God that we still have a conscience about these things. Thank God that we’re still disturbed by the thought of young girls being taught these dance moves, let alone filming them in front of an audience as well as being involved in other, inappropriate scenes.

For several decades now, total nudity has been on full and open display in different countries in Europe. This includes grocery and department stores, where porn magazines adorn some of the checkout racks.

As bad as things are here in America, and as much as we export porn worldwide, there is still a shred of public decency that we cling to.

I’m glad that our reaction to “Cuties” is different here than in Europe.

Interestingly, Sarandos didn’t compare the reaction of American viewers to that of viewers in other countries where Netflix airs. I wonder what Muslim viewers think of the movie in countries like Jordan and Egypt? (Oh wait. Perhaps it’s not airing there. After all, the movie takes a swipe at religious Muslims too.)

And how big a screening is the movie getting in the continent of Africa? How are the viewers enjoying it in countries like Cameroon and Sierra Leone? What kind of reception is it getting in Singapore and Hong Kong? And how about a more conservative European country like Hungary?

I don’t have definitive answers to all of these questions, but I have some educated guesses. That’s why Bloomberg announced on September 13, “Netflix Won’t Cancel ‘Cuties’ at Home, But Might Have to Abroad.”

As the article by Lucas Shaw explained, “Netflix has delayed the release of the movie in Turkey, and has yet to provide a new date.”

“As Netflix has introduced its service to more than 190 countries, it has said people all over the world watch the same kinds of shows,” he continues.

But Shaw goes on to note that “Governments in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Vietnam and Germany have all asked Netflix to take programs down due to objectionable content.”

It looks like Sarandos was quite selective in his comments, comparing the American response to “Cuties” to the response in Europe, as if Americans of all people worldwide have a problem with the content. The reality is that the movie could not even air in some other parts of the world.

Either way, Sarandos actually paid us Americans an unintended compliment. We still know how to blush. That’s a badge of honor that we should wear proudly.
