EDMONTON, Alberta, June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – Internal party angst is growing against the “hypocrisy” of Alberta Premier Jason Kenney after he allegedly broke the same COVID-19 rules he has fiercely enforced for more than a year.

Last Wednesday, photos emerged showing Kenney and eight other people, including Health Minister Tyler Shandro, House Leader and Environment Minister Jason Nixon, and Finance Minister Travis Toews, appear to be violating COVID-19 guidelines while engaging in a patio dinner on the rooftop of a government building last week.

Photos of the dinner, which took place on June 1, were sent to multiple media outlets from an “anonymous” individual who took the photos from a nearby building.

The photos of Kenney and his minister’s rooftop dinner show attendees in close proximity to each other, as well as people walking in and out of the building, with none of them wearing masks, although they are not mandatory outdoors.

According to Alberta’s COVID-19 rules, since June 1 outdoor social gatherings are limited to 10 people who are mandated to be “physically distanced” at all times if they are from “different households.” Indoor social gatherings are not allowed.

Dining in an outdoor patio is only allowed for up to four people from the same household.

After news spread of the dinner, members of Kenney’s United Conservative Party (UCP), Independent MLAs and those from the opposition NDP blasted the event for its “hypocrisy.”

“Looking at these photos it seems clear to me that several health restrictions were violated. Much of the public concern about this incident has been about the hypocrisy of senior officials breaking their own rules. I can certainly understand these concerns,” wrote Airdrie-East UCP MLA Angela Pitt, who is also the deputy speaker of the legislature, on her Facebook page.

“The Premier had a restaurant dinner on his patio with seven friends, and it remains unclear to Albertans why a restaurant owner can't have larger groups on their patio. I am calling on the Premier today to make the rules more consistent, to give businesses fairness, and to allow restaurants to safely operate in the same fashion in which the Premier just portrayed.”

Shortly after Pitt’s statement, Independent Alberta MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat Drew Barnes, who was booted from Kenney’s governing UCP in May along with MLA Todd Loewen, said Kenney needs to resign because of the rooftop dinner.

“Like Todd Loewen, this is another example of a principled, hardworking constituency conservative MLA hearing overwhelmingly from Albertans that Jason Kenney’s entitlement, hypocrisy and refusal to listen have reached a breaking point,” said Barnes, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat.

“Kenney needs to resign, and all Albertans need to get back to building a free, prosperous Alberta for our communities, families and children.”

Over the weekend, two of Kenney’s cabinet ministers -- Leela Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women, and Minister of Community and Social Services Rajan Sawhney -- demanded that Kenney apologize for the rooftop dinner.
In a press conference today, Kenney offered an apology for his rooftop meal.

“I regret the perception this has created. I truly regret it. I take full responsibility,” said Kenney.

Peter McCaffrey, president of the Alberta Institute, said he has no problem with Kenney dining. It’s just that as leader of the province he was the one who enacted the laws that businesses were forced to follow.

“Kenney's defence essentially boils down to him thinking what he was doing made sense and was safe. I agree, it did! The problem is, the laws he's imposing on businesses and restaurants around the province *don't* make sense,” tweeted McCaffrey.

Photos of the dining event also sparked online ridicule and outrage, as many businesses have been forced to close due to severe COVID-19 lockdowns that have kept Alberta under lock and key for more than six months.

“While they send out the police to arrest pastors and seize church properties, they ignore the very rules they punish others for questioning. It’s over, @jkenney. Open up everything now and leave people alone. #cdnpoli #EndTheLockdowns,” tweeted Independent MP Derek Sloan.

The dining event took place in the penthouse suite of the old Federal building in Edmonton, Alberta, which is used as a government office.

In 2014, the top floor suite was nicknamed the “Sky Palace” due to then-conservative Alberta Premier Alison Redford attempting to convert it into a high-end suite complete with bedrooms and lavish furnishings.

After Redford was found out, the 11th floor suite became a symbol of political excess, and her plans were halted. It now is used as a boardroom area, but it is licensed to serve alcohol and cater food.

Last Thursday, Kenney claimed that no rules were broken and that he was fully compliant with the recently relaxed COVID-19 rules that came into effect last Tuesday, allowing for up to 10 people to gather outdoors.

In the Alberta Legislature last week in response to a question from the NDP opposition about the rooftop dining event, Kenney claimed that a large bottle of whiskey photographed on the table was a “budget” liquor, despite the fact such a bottle goes for about $50.

“It’s a nice Irish whiskey, but it's not the finest,” said Kenney, adding “It’s a budget liquor.”

According to a spokesperson for Kenney, the dining event was a “working dinner” and came at no taxpayer expense.

A “Fact Check” report from the Alberta publication the Western Standard found that Kenney and the other attendees of rooftop dinner potentially violated 18 of their “own regulations, and eight counts of violating their own guidelines.”

The Western Standard reported that while the meeting would be most likely classified by Alberta Health Services (AHS) as an “outdoor patio dining,” which means it would have been illegal due to their being more than four people there, the government could say it was an “outdoor social gathering.

“Even if it was an outdoor social gathering, the event would still break a ream of the government’s own COVID-19 restrictions. This includes: Eight guideline violations for having members of different households. Eight legal regulatory violations for not physically distancing, and eight legal regulatory violations forming in and out of doors,” says the Western Standard “Fact Check” report.

Kenney’s COVID-19 restrictions have been met with opposition from many caucus members within his party. He has promised to remove all COVID-19 restrictions “if 70 percent of Albertans get at least one COVID-19 jab."

Recently, in an unprecedented political move, 17 UCP MLAs blasted their party leader and premier for taking the province back into a severe COVID-19 lockdown.

Under Kenney, three Christian pastors have been jailed — the only ones in Canada — because they defied COVID-19 health rules regarding church services that limit congregation size. Alberta currently allows only 15 percent capacity of the building and mandates physical distancing and mask wearing.

In a recent extraordinary move, the board of a Constituency Association (CA) of UCP for Barnes voted 90 percent in favor of demanding that the province’s Premier reinstate him.

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – The Biden family’s scandals with America’s number one adversary keep piling up. In less than five months since Inauguration Day, we’ve learned out about Hunter Biden’s ties to Chinese dictator Xi Jinping, possible Chinese espionage, and a Beijing-backed propaganda group (on top of his other business and personal scandals – some directly involving his presidential father).

Reports about Hunter’s verified emails obtained by Jack Maxey, former co-host of Steve Bannon’s War Room, recently revealed new information regarding the Bidens’ Chinese-linked dealings in Eastern Europe with top law enforcement figures.

Starting in 2016, Hunter Biden worked with ex-FBI director Louis Freeh and retired Interpol chief Ron Noble to help a corrupt Romanian tycoon, Gabriel Popoviciu, escape conviction.

During that same time, Freeh gave Joe Biden’s grandchildren a gift of $100,000, had phone calls with then-Vice President Biden, and solicited him for “future work.” FBI agents apparently kept covering for the Bidens through 2020, orchestrating a “bogus” briefing for Republicans used by the press to smear an investigation into the Biden family.

What isn’t clear is whether Freeh knew that the Romanian case implicated the Bidens’ work with a top Chinese state-backed entity.

For Hunter and Joe, Popoviciu was yet another part of a scheme entangling both of them – and those around them – with Beijing.

All roads lead to China

Hunter Biden’s work in Romania dates to at least 2015, when he was retained by Popoviciu to help the tycoon evade corruption charges. Popoviciu had been charged with bribery and “complicity in abuse of position” in 2009 for his role in an illegal sale of hundreds of acres of property by a Romanian university.

Baneasa Investments, a company owned by Popoviciu and the university, later used the land to develop a major Bucharest retail area that is home to the current U.S. Embassy in Romania, according to Romania Insider. Mark Gitenstein, previously a staffer for Joe Biden, was the U.S. ambassador to Romania when the new embassy was inaugurated in a ceremony with Hunter’s late brother, Beau.

Despite assistance from the son of the U.S. vice president, Popoviciu was convicted on his charges in 2016. As Popoviciu put together a legal team to appeal the conviction, Hunter Biden referred the case to Freeh, a board member of a foundation named for Beau. Freeh’s legal group eventually tapped former FBI agents and Ron Noble in a failed bid to get Popoviciu’s conviction overturned, according to media reports and Hunter Biden’s emails.

As with much of the Biden family’s shady business activity, Chinese ties appear to have been a key factor in Romania.

By 2017, Popoviciu’s fortunes had special import for Hunter and his father’s reported dealings with a Chinese firm, CEFC China. A business plan sent to Hunter Biden in May 2017 by associate James Gilliar highlighted the significance of the Popoviciu case and Baneasa Investments for their prospective work with CEFC, then a leading state-backed energy company.

The business plan, an investment outline for CEFC, was proposed by a group of businessmen including Hunter Biden and his uncle James, Joe’s brother. That coalition later formed SinoHawk Holdings LLC, an ill-fated joint venture negotiated with CEFC that year.

According to texts and emails between the businessmen, Joe Biden had direct involvement in the venture. Messages produced last fall by Tony Bobulinksi, former CEO of SinoHawk, show that Gilliar discussed how to “get Joe involved” around the time that Hunter received the CEFC business plan, the New York Post reported.

“Don’t mention Joe being involved, it’s only when u are face to face,” Gilliar told Bobulinksi days after he sent Hunter the plan. A bombshell message dated to May 13 further implicated the ex-vice president, detailing a proposed equity structure for SinoHawk with “10 held by H for the big guy.” Bobulinski confirmed to the Post that “the big guy” referred to Joe Biden.

The Bidens and the 'Baneasa Project'

The business plan for CEFC involved entrenching the Beijing-backed company in southeast Europe in partnership with Popoviciu. “CEFC is active in Romania through its holding KAZMunayGas and its local subsidiary Rompetrol and wishes to expand its presence in the continent and the country investing in large scale projects,” it noted.

The document added that Alltrom Group, a network of companies owned by Popoviciu, “is a major local investor with a leading position in its core business which is Real Estate development and a major candidate for becoming CEFC’s local partner through its own businesses and projects(.)” Baneasa Investments was explicitly targeted in the plan.

“An initial visit of Mr. Qingxin Ren took place on 5-6 March and preliminary discussions were held between him and Mr. Popoviciu and his associate Mr. George Argentopoulos,” it said. “A site visit took also place during this visits and was decided that AG will produce this document to facilitate further discussions among the parties.”

The purpose of the “Baneasa Project” was ultimately for CEFC “to become the biggest developer in Romania and one of the biggest in the region of SE Europe,” with 1 billion euros worth of “future development” and “1,000,000m² of residential developments.”

The project, however, required the “resolution” of Popoviciu’s legal troubles.

“Our scenario implies a resolution of the current legal dispute over parts of the project for which all owners of the Fund will seek to resolve with the Romanian State,” the business plan stressed. “If the issue with the State mentioned above is resolved the Fund’s value will double without even further developments as a result of the appreciation of land and the yield on the existing businesses.”

Image

CEFC seems to have been receptive. “Thanks to your support to our cooperation, the consensus we made last time has been materialized in a timely manner,” CEFC chairman Ye Jianming wrote in a letter to Hunter Biden in July 2017. “Our cooperation in Oman and Romania has been productive and I am aware of the status quo.”

“Please accept my best regards to you and your family,” Ye concluded. He noted that it had been “months since we met in the U.S.”

“I would sum it up that the Biden family was doing the bidding for China on four continents,” Jack Maxey told LifeSite’s Dr. Maike Hickson about the Bidens’ work with CEFC. “This is a takedown of the West. Whether the Bidens are useful idiots or not, they are partly responsible, and they are certainly profiting from the betrayal.”

SinoHawk eventually was scuttled within months of the “big guy” email, as CEFC imploded amid a massive bribery scandal and Hunter Biden and Freeh failed to secure Popoviciu’s exoneration. Hunter nevertheless managed to squeeze millions out of people close to CEFC before the group declared bankruptcy, according to a report by the U.S. Senate last year.

The Bidens and their Chinese partners’ interests in Popoviciu’s freedom raise serious questions. For one, did Hunter Biden purposefully use top American and international law enforcement figures to benefit a firm linked to China’s communist government?

Did his vice president father’s apparent opportunities with CEFC ever impact his discussions with former FBI director Freeh? What knowledge did Freeh have, if any, of Joe Biden’s involvement in a Chinese venture implicated in the Popoviciu case?

And will we ever reach the end of the Biden corruption saga?

Dr. Maike Hickson contributed to this report.

Former CDC director claims he has had death threats from fellow scientists for suggesting COVID originated in Chinese lab

'I was threatened and ostracized because I proposed another hypothesis. I expected it from politicians. I didn’t expect it from science,' former CDC direct Robert Redfield said in recent comments to Vanity Fair.

WASHINGTON D.C., June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – A former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that he received death threats following his public comments about the possibility of COVID-19 having originated and escaped from a laboratory in China.

Robert Redfield served under former President Donald Trump as the director for the CDC from March 2018 through January 20, 2021.

In March 2021 Redfield made headlines when, during an interview with CNN, he expressed support for the idea that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan.

“I’m of the point of view that I still think the most likely etiology of this pathology in Wuhan was from a laboratory — escaped. Other people don’t believe that. That’s fine: science will eventually figure it out.”

Speaking to CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Redfield said that it was “not unusual for respiratory pathogens that are being worked on in a laboratory to infect the laboratory worker.”

He stopped short of accusing China from having deliberately leaked and spread the virus, however, explicitly stating that he did not imply any “intentionality.”

“It’s my opinion, right? But I am a virologist. I have spent my life in virology. I do not believe this somehow came from a bat to a human and at that moment in time, that the virus came to the human, became one of the most infectious viruses that we know in humanity for human-to-human transmission.”

With normal transmission of pathogens from animals to humans “it takes a while for it to figure out how to become more and more efficient in human-to-human transmission,” Redfield stated.

“I just don’t think this makes biological sense,” he stated, referring to the theory that COVID-19 spread by accident, from a bat to humans. Various mainstream media reports have consistently promoted the idea that COVID-19 originated in an animal market in Wuhan, where it accidentally passed from bat to human.

However, these comments appear to have earned Redfield the anger of some who watched the interview. In comments to Vanity Fair, the former CDC director said that he has received death threats from fellow members of the scientific community in response for his televised comments.

“I was threatened and ostracized because I proposed another hypothesis. I expected it from politicians. I didn’t expect it from science,” Redfield said.

At the time of Redfield’s comments, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that it deemed the lab leak suggestion to be “extremely unlikely.”

“The findings suggest that the laboratory incidents hypothesis is extremely unlikely to explain the introduction of the virus to the human population,” stated the WHO’s food safety and animal diseases expert Peter Ben Embarek.

However, since Redfield’s March comments, many within the mainstream media have now begun discussing the possibility of the lab leak origins of COVID-19.

In a recent opinion piece, Dr. Joseph Mercola commented on this, saying that many “legacy journalists” now find themselves in an “uncomfortable position” having previously “insisted [that] SARS-CoV-2 made the jump from bats to humans at one of Wuhan’s open-air wet markets” and having “slandered and censored… anyone who discussed the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 coming from a lab”

Back in April 2020, China expert and founder of the Population Research Institute Steven Mosher, examined the possibility of COVID’s laboratory origins. “Actually, the ‘most likely source’ of the coronavirus is not just one animal but two, whose distinct but related species of coronaviruses were isolated from their hosts and then pieced together in the lab using recombinant technology to create a new and much more infectious variety,” Mosher wrote.

Mosher was subsequently censored by Big Tech for this argument, when Facebook labelled an article he wrote for the New York Post on the laboratory origins of COVID, as “false information.”

Bishops of England and Wales again permit reception of Communion on the tongue

After refusing to offer Holy Communion on the tongue for almost a year, the new guidelines published by the bishops’ conference allow Catholics to receive the Eucharist on the tongue.

LONDON, June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — The new COVID-19 guidelines released by the bishops of England and Wales permit Catholics to start receiving Holy Communion on the tongue again. Until now, the bishops had — contrary to canon law — prohibited the Church’s official practice regarding Holy Communion for more than a year.

Beginning May 17, England and Wales moved into Step 3 of their government’s COVID-19 Response Roadmap. With this in mind, the bishops published a new set of guidelines for Catholics regarding attending Mass and receiving Communion.

The guidelines read, “Communion is recommended to be distributed in the hand, but if people wish to receive on the tongue, then they should wait until the end of the communion line and receive then.”

“Communion on the tongue exposes the minister’s hand to their aerosol and increases the possibility of viral infection,” it continues. “The minister should sanitise their hands after distributing communion on the tongue. Communion on the tongue should not be given in areas with very high spikes in local infections.”

In England and Wales, Communion on the tongue or kneeling has been officially denied to Catholics since June of last year, because of health concerns related to COVID-19.

Even traditional Catholic parishes, which only offer Communion on the tongue, as is prescribed in the form of the rite, were banned from distributing Communion on the tongue to the faithful. Members of the Oratorian congregation in Birmingham were prohibited by Archbishop Bernard Longley from distributing Holy Communion on the tongue.

However, the practice of receiving on the hand, instead of on the tongue, is a formalized act of disobedience to the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church, in the period following the Second Vatican Council.

Renowned scholar Dr. Peter Kwasniewski has declared that “many bishops are abusing their authority” by banning Communion on the tongue. In a lengthy article published in May last year, Kwasniewski collected the statements of the magisterium on the manner of receiving the Eucharist, writing that bishops had no authority to mandate reception in the hand, or forbid reception on the tongue.

Indeed, in the 2004 document Redemptionis Sacramentum, the Catholic Church preserves the Tradition of the Church, teaching that a Catholic “always has the right to receive Holy Communion on the tongue.” While the document does allow for the post-Vatican II practice of Communion being received on the hand, it also stipulates that reverence must always be prioritized: “If there is a risk of profanation, then Holy Communion should not be given in the hand to the faithful.”

Despite this, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments then published a letter on November 13, 2020, confirming and ratifying the decision of a U.S. bishop to only offer Communion on the hand during the coronavirus crisis. This was in direct contradiction to Redemptionis Sacramentum and a 2009 letter from the same congregation, then under Pope Benedict XVI.

That 2009 letter affirmed the right of the faithful to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, even during the H1N1 influenza pandemic. It referred back to the text of Redemptionis Sacramentum, re-iterating the constant right of the faithful to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, even in times of danger to the public health.

In addition to the questions of canon law, there have been numerous statements and studies by physicians, arguing that Communion on the tongue is actually safer than Communion in the hand, or at worst equally dangerous.

In Poland, doctors told bishops that receiving Communion on the hand was more dangerous than receiving on the tongue because of increased contact. The doctors also pointed out that reception of the Eucharist kneeling is safer as the communicant is further from the priest’s face.

Twenty-one Austrian doctors wrote a letter last June, appealing to their Bishops’ Conference to lift the ban on Communion on the tongue. “From the point of view of hygiene, it is absolutely incomprehensible to us why oral communion has been banned in Austria. We also consider this form of distribution safer than hand communion,” the doctors wrote.

In fact, a recent scientific study published in the Journal of Religion and Health repeated the already well documented fact that reception of Holy Communion on the tongue is safer than in the hand. The author, Sergey Budaev, noted the obvious benefit of kneeling and receiving on the tongue, since the two people are breathing at different heights, instead of directly on each other.

“The assumption that Communion in the hand carries no or little risk is not well grounded and may in fact create a false sense of security potentially provoking more reckless behaviour of both the Minister and the communicant,” he wrote.

In the face of widespread canonically illicit prohibition of receiving Communion on the tongue during COVID times, a French reader of LifeSiteNews used his own strategy to overcome a clerical ban on his right as a Catholic: He issued a canonically-founded appeal to his local bishop, referencing multiple texts from Canon Law and the teaching of the Church, including those already referenced above. His bishop was unable to reject the appeal, given that the man’s appeal was completely grounded in the Church’s legislative texts.

In a July 2020 interview on the John-Henry Westen show, Kwasniewski declared that the current restrictions on receiving on the tongue were nothing more than an abuse of episcopal power. “Many bishops are abusing their authority right now because … they’re supposed to uphold Canon Law, and Canon Law is really clear that the faithful have the right to receive communion on the tongue. That’s it.”

Bishop Athanasius Schneider has also weighed in on the banning both of Holy Communion and public Masses, saying that such acts are “pure human law; however, the supreme law in the Church is the salvation of souls.”

Schneider suggested that bishops who, in line with government guidelines, have prohibited Communion on the tongue have “reacted more like civil bureaucrats than shepherds. In focusing too exclusively on all the hygienic protective measures, they have lost a supernatural vision and have abandoned the primacy of the eternal good of souls.”

Donors throw support behind Fr. Altman, LifeFunder campaign rockets past $330k in under two weeks

Altman’s critique of the Catholic hierarchy in America has earned him the ire of the secular media and many prelates.

June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Within just two weeks of launching a fundraising campaign for Fr. James Altman, who is known for fearlessly attacking Catholicism lite, LifeSite’s LifeFunder platform has raised more than $332,000 thanks to the generous contributions of almost 4,000 donors, all in support of Altman’s work.

Altman’s critique of the Catholic hierarchy in America, including the decision of countless bishops to shut their church doors and withhold Mass and the sacraments from the faithful in a time of great need, has earned him the ire of the secular media and many prelates.

The Wisconsin pastor has faced much backlash from the political Left since first exploding into the public sphere in the fall of 2020 with his now-famous video speech “You cannot be Catholic and a Democrat.” At its release, the video went viral, racking up over 1 million views and bringing Altman from simply ministering to the modest parish of St. James the Less in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to the attention of the world.

Following the release of his speech, Altman quickly faced attacks from enemies both inside the Church and out, with his office receiving numerous messages in opposition to his bold stance for the truth: “[We] got the most vile, despicable phone calls, letters. I got some terrible, really foul messages,” Altman told LifeSite’s editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen in September.

The latest attempt to silence Altman has come from his own Bishop William P. Callahan of the diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Callahan asked for Altman to prematurely resign his post at the parish of St. James the Less at the end of May, after months of threatening “canonical penalties.” Previously, he had asked Altman to halt live-streaming his Masses following his scorching of the Democratic Party platform.

With confidence in his convictions, however, Altman refused to abandon his parish by leaving before the end of his tenure, leading Callahan to begin the canonical process of his removal. This process brings with it many expenses, not least of which will be attorney fees, prompting LifeSiteNews to run a fundraising campaign through its LifeFunder platform.

Donate to Fr. Altman's fight for the Faith at LifeFunder.com.

Within the first 24 hours, the campaign had already exceeded its target by almost double the $100,000 goal. Now, just under two weeks later, that sum has broken $300,000 and continues to grow with 25 days left to donate.

Though this sum likely exceeds the costs associated with Altman’s legal battle, the priest has pledged to donate some of the extra money to charities of his choosing, as well as to be able to “feed his sheep” by continuing to broadcast during this time of uncertainty.

Altman spoke to LifeSiteNews correspondent Jim Hale just days after he was asked to resign, and after hundreds of thousands of dollars had already poured in from generous supporters.

He expressed a deep gratitude for the “extraordinary” support from LifeSite readers, describing their generosity as “a testament to me of the witness of touching people around the world with the depth of our faith, with the truths of our faith.”

In addition to laymen around the world, Altman’s unwavering fidelity to the truth gained him the open support of Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas.

“Fr James Altman is in trouble for speaking the truth,” Strickland observed in a May 24 tweet. “I originally supported him when he spoke bold truth during the election. I continue to support him for speaking the truth in Jesus Christ. He inspires many to keep the faith during these dark days. Let us pray for him.”

Indeed, it is precisely Altman’s firm preaching that has caused him so much trouble with Church authorities. In a Pentecost Sunday homily, Altman told his parish that “they want my head on a platter. They want my head now for speaking the truth. I apparently have created enemies in the hierarchy.”

But not one to take things lying down, Altman hit back: “To paraphrase the great, great Cardinal Burke, ‘When I die, I will stand in judgment before the Lord, not any Bishop of the church,’ nor as the great Cardinal Burke specifically said, the USCCB.”

Instead, Altman has held firm to the truths he has consistently preached, and which have won him the admiration of countless faithful Catholics the world over. For this, Bishop Callahan has accused Altman of being “divisive and ineffective.”

“I do not know how any ordained priest, or bishop, or cardinal, could fail to feed his children,” Altman said in response. “But I do know this. I am not the divisive one. I am not the ineffective one. I am not the one disrespecting my office.”

“[The bishops] have done a great job being divisive. They have done a great job of being ineffective and they have done a great job of disrespecting their office all by themselves, without any help from me.”

“Jesus warned the Apostles and us that if the world hated him, it would hate us, just because we are trying to be faithful. In other words, the world will be divided by the truth,” he continued. “There will be we who are faithful, who follow the truth, divided from those who are not faithful and who oppose the truth.”

Court disregards Charter freedoms in Pastor James Coates trial

'An appeal of this decision is being considered, based on serious errors in law.'

EDMONTON, Alberta, June 7, 2021 (JCCF) – The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is disappointed with today’s ruling from the Provincial Court of Alberta in the ongoing trial of Pastor James Coates, of GraceLife Church. Judge Robert Shaigec delivered an oral ruling this morning rejecting Pastor Coates’ arguments that the Public Health Act Ticket he received on December 20, 2020, for holding church services as normal, violated multiple Charter rights.

“It’s obvious that government restrictions on people’s freedom to worship, assemble and associate are violated by health orders that prevent normal, regular church services from taking place,” states lawyer John Carpay, president of the Justice Centre.

“The judge thought the restrictions were reasonable, which is not the proper legal test at this stage. Whether restrictions are reasonable should only be considered later, after the government has finally produced medical and scientific evidence to try to justify its restrictions on Charter freedoms,” continues Carpay.

“An appeal of this decision is being considered, based on serious errors in law.”

While acknowledging “the sincerity of Pastor Coates religious convictions,” Judge Shaigec decided that the Pastor’s Charter right to freedom of religion had to be “reasonably threatened in more than an insubstantial way and only after competing interests are weighed.” Judge Shaigec further stated his view that, “Freedom of religion is subject to such limitations to protect public health and safety” and he focused on whether “enforcement” of public health laws and government “conduct” violated Pastor Coates’ religious freedom.

The first portion of Pastor Coates’ trial proceeded for two days on May 3-4, 2021, in Provincial Court in Edmonton. The remaining portion of the trial, which involves a challenge to the public health orders issued by Dr. Deena Hinshaw and would normally have coincided with the first part of the trial, was permitted by the court to be adjourned because government lawyers were not yet prepared to present any medical or scientific evidence. Pastor Coates’ Charter challenge to the constitutionality and legality of Dr. Deena Hinshaw’s lockdown restrictions will be heard by the Court at an unknown later date, perhaps in Fall 2021. Government lawyers have still not provided any court in Alberta with scientific evidence in support of public health orders that have now been in place for 15 months.

Before the trial, Judge Shaigec decided that up to 1,000 people would be permitted to attend the first trial through the court’s virtual software. However, the Court then decided that those people were only able to hear the trial, and not be able to watch it. There was no video feed. The Judge’s Decision followed a request by the government prosecution lawyer that the trial not be viewable virtually. The prosecution lawyer did not want any images or video stream of her to be viewable during the trial. The Court additionally granted the prosecutor’s request that her name not be used during the trial.

Pastor Coates and GraceLife Church, near Stony Plain, Alberta, are charged with violating the Public Health Act for having held normal church services, which were commenced after many months of lockdown restrictions. Pastor Coates spent one month and six days in jail before his release on March 22, 2021 because he would not sign an agreement to stop pastoring his church according to the congregation’s beliefs. The GraceLife Church building has been seized and barricaded by the government since April 7, 2021 such that the congregants have gathered for worship at secret locations these past two months.

Representing Pastor Coates and GraceLife Church, the Justice Centre argued at the May 3-4 trial that Pastor Coates’ Charter rights and freedoms have been violated, and that the Court should therefore throw out the Public Health Act charge against Pastor Coates.

However, the Provincial Court Judge ruling on Pastor Coates’ trial dismissed the argument that Pastor Coates’ freedom of religion was violated by the ticket he received for holding a regular church service and rejected out of hand arguments that his freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly were violated.

Judge Shaigec also ruled that even though Pastor Coates spent 35 days in jail because his release condition required him to violate his conscience and religious beliefs, his right to liberty was not violated, stating he could have been released on “a single condition he comply with the law”, referring to public health orders.

“The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms requires governments to justify demonstrably – with compelling evidence – any law, policy or health order that violates any of our fundamental freedoms to move, travel, associate, worship, assemble, and express ourselves. This very basic constitutional requirement has been ignored completely by governments at every level in the past 14 months. Unfortunately, the courts have permitted the government to delay facing accountability in regard to Charter violations,” states lawyer Mr. Carpay.

“The government has now had 15 months to assemble proper medical and scientific evidence to justify lockdowns and the resulting violations of our fundamental Charter freedoms. Yet the government cannot or will not put that evidence before the courts. But, somehow, the Alberta government would have us believe that it has enough medical and scientific evidence to shut down hundreds of small businesses, pushing many of them into bankruptcy, and to cancel over 20,000 medically necessary surgeries, and to force Albertans into a third lockdown as of yesterday, with its resulting harms of unemployment, poverty and despair,” continues Carpay.

“The Charter requires Canada’s federal and provincial governments to support and justify restrictions on Charter freedoms whether a court challenge to those restrictions exists or not. The inability or unwillingness of the Alberta government to present medical and scientific evidence at this May 3 trial suggests that lockdown restrictions since March of 2020 are based purely on speculation, not science. If these measures were based on evidence, the government would be able to produce that evidence in court, after almost 14 months of lockdown restrictions,” concludes Carpay.

Chinese defector says China is producing COVID variants to cover up Wuhan lab leak: report

June 7, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) reportedly hid the existence of a Chinese defector with knowledge of the communist nation’s bioweapons program from the FBI and CIA because it felt those agencies could not be trusted.

In a recent series of tweets, independent journalist Adam Housley called attention to the existence of the informant who has told DIA authorities that China is trying to produce variants of the virus suggesting that COVID-19 came from bats in order to cover up that it came from the Wuhan lab.

According to a report by Red State, the high-ranking defector has been with the DIA for three months, providing “an extensive, technically detailed debriefing to US officials.”

“Sources say the level of confidence in the defector’s information is what has led to a sudden crisis of confidence in Dr. Anthony Fauci,” asserts the Red State report, “adding that U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) personnel detailed to DIA have corroborated very technical details of information provided by the defector.”

After having canceled the Trump administration’s investigation into the virus’ origins, the Biden White House has recently been forced to hurriedly launch another

“Being told the increased pressure on China in recent days is due to a defector with intimate knowledge,” tweeted Housley. “In fact, [FBI director Christopher A.] Wray didn’t know right away because they wanted to make sure they got all they needed before telling him.

“Also … US intelligence believes China is trying to produce variants that suggest it came from bats to cover up that it originally came from a lab,” continued Housley. “The belief is still that it escaped accidentally, but was allowed to spread.”

“Again … what I reported tonight. US intelligence has a Chinese defector with Wuhan info. AND China is trying to produce variants that suggest it came from bats to cover up that coronavirus originally came from a lab,” reiterated Housley.

“FBI Director Christopher Wray was ‘ambushed’ with the information,” RedState’s sources say. “Langley was also unaware. Sources say DIA leadership kept the defector within their Clandestine Services network to prevent Langley and the State Department from accessing the person, whose existence was kept from other agencies because DIA leadership believes there are Chinese spies or sources inside the FBI, CIA, and several other federal agencies.”

In a commentary written for LifeSiteNews late last month, China expert Steven Mosher indicated why the FBI, CIA, and other U.S. intelligence agencies are untrustworthy:

[T]hese are the same intelligence agencies that fed us the Steele Dossier and Russian Collusion lies of the past few years. I myself have little confidence that these heavily politicized agencies will produce anything other than a whitewash of China’s responsibility for the pandemic that it unleashed upon the world. Not to mention that they will be starting from ground-zero in carrying out their investigation.

Mosher was the first to expose the Wuhan-lab origin of the coronavirus, drawing the fury of Silicon Valley “fact-checkers.”

In a recent video interview with LifeSite’s editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen, Mosher “connected how China’s People’s Liberation Army was involved in experiments at the bioweapons lab Wuhan Institute of Virology that were ‘not just purely scientific research.’ He also highlighted the involvement of Anthony Fauci in not only covering up this information, but even in helping the Wuhan lab with funds, training, and support.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray’s “blatantly political bent is unprofessional and is undoubtedly sowing distrust within the ranks of the nation’s security agencies,” wrote Kyle Becker, a former writer/associate producer at Fox News and founder of Becker News.

“Wray’s misleading comments about the threat posed to the nation by ‘white supremacists’ and ‘far right domestic extremists’ do not comport with present day political realities that grave threats are posed by both the right and the left, including radicalized Black Lives Matter activists and Antifa extremists who have caused billions in damage to communities nationwides [sic], as well as hundreds of injuries and dozens of deaths,” said Becker.

BREAKING: Canadian gov’t. votes to severely limit debate around internet regulation bill

This process to shut down committee work hasn’t been used in 20 years and never for this short period of time,” tweeted Geist.

OTTAWA, Ontario, June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Political debate regarding the Canadian government’s controversial internet regulation Bill C-10 will now be restricted to only five more hours after a motion to limit debate on the bill at committee gained enough support to pass in the House of Commons this morning.

Last Thursday, the Liberal government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced a motion to limit debate of Minister of Canadian Heritage Steven Guilbeault’s Bill C-10, or “Act to amend the Broadcasting Act.” The motion came about because Guilbeault claimed opposition filibustering from Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) MPs at committee hearings of the bill were a form of “obstruction.”

“It will finally put an end to six weeks of systematic obstruction of the bill by the Conservative Party,” said Guilbeault.

The motion passed in a 181-147 vote with the support of the Bloc Québécois. Voting against the gag order were CPC, NDP, and Green MPs.

The motion of the text reads that in relation to “Bill C-10, An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts,” no more than “five further hours shall be allotted to the consideration of the committee stage of the bill.”

“That, at the expiry of the time provided for the committee stage, any proceedings before the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage on the said bill shall be interrupted, if required for the purpose of this order, and, in turn, every question necessary for the disposal of the said stage of the bill shall be put forthwith and successively, without further debate or amendment,” reads the motion sponsored by Liberal MP Mona Fortier.

Bill C-10 would force companies such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook to remove content deemed “harmful” within 24 hours. In essence, it would let the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regulate the internet and social media in line with their regulations for broadcasting services.

The CRTC is the federal body tasked with regulating TV and radio in Canada, but has had to keep a hands-off approach to regulating the internet.

According to Dr. Michael Geist, law professor at University of Ottawa and Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law, placing a “gag order” on a debate of a Bill at a committee hearing is not something that has been used in a long time.

“As expected, the Bill C-10 gag order passes 181-147 with Liberal and Bloc support. Committee limited to 5 more hours. Many potential amendments will not be considered. This process to shut down committee work hasn’t been used in 20 years and never for this short period of time,” tweeted Geist.

CPC MP Rachael Harder blasted Guilbeault last week for trying to prevent MPs from voicing their concerns about the bill at committee hearings of the bill.

“How low can you go, that’s the name of the game when it comes to free speech with this government and it’s attack, time, and time and time again,” said Harder.

“What this government is doing now is nothing less than a gag order. Censoring the voices of creators wasn’t enough. Now, they’re having to stop members of parliament from debating this atrocious bill at committee,” she continued.

As a retort to Harder’s comments, Guilbeault said that without placing limits on debates it would take “months” for the bill to be debated.

Harder said that the Liberal government is so “determined to rush it though” that they are going as far to “silence” our “voices” by shutting down debate on Bill C-10: “Now, the government doesn’t want any more problems to be discovered with their bill, which is plagued with them by the way, and so now they’re shutting us down. Why?”

Guilbeault responded by saying, “If we continue going at the rate we’re going now, in six months’ time from now the bill would still be in front of the committee.”

Last year, the Trudeau government introduced Guilbeault’s Bill C-10 that would regulate certain online media services through the creation of a new class of broadcaster called “online undertakings.” The new regulations would be done through amendments to Canada’s Broadcasting Act.

The original draft of Bill C-10 had a Section 4.1 exemption clause for “user content” posted on social media by individuals, meaning such posts would originally have not fallen under CRTC regulations.

However, a recent amendment to Bill C-10 through the Heritage Committee removed the Section 4.1 provision, which could mean that the federal government will regulate what people post online.

The Liberals, NDP, and Bloc party members recently rejected a CPC amendment to Bill C-10, which would have brought back safeguards for user-generated social media content during a clause-by-clause review of Bill C-10 by the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.

Recently, the Heritage Committee put a hold on Bill C-10 until the Department of Justice looked at it to determine whether or not the recent amendments violate one’s free speech granted in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms with regard to posts on social media.

After a review, the government said in explanatory note on the bill that it does not impede Canadians’ freedom of speech.

Bill C-10 has come under fire from the former head of the CRTC, Peter Menzies, who said, “Putting the CRTC in charge of the entire internet, I mean, that’s like putting a logging company in charge of the Great Bear Rainforest … it’s not going to end well.”

Currently, Bill C-10 is at second reading stage. Parliament is scheduled to wrap up by June 23 for summer break, so the government will likely try to ensure it gets passed in the House of Commons by then. It is unlikely to make it through Canada’s Senate for a full review in that timeframe, however.

In a May 17 open letter addressed to Trudeau, critics called upon the Trudeau government to halt all regulation of the internet, saying there would be “unintended consequences for the free and open internet in Canada” from any “overreaching regulatory policies.”

Guilbeault recently struggled to give a clear answer to justify why a committee he chaired moved to have personal social media posts placed under government oversight.

CPC leader MP Erin O’Toole said a future Conservative government would do away with Bill C-10.

California congressman requires ‘proof of vaccination’ to attend in-person town hall

Democrat Rep. Jared Huffman, who has voted to eviscerate state voter ID laws, is requiring town hall participants show 'proof of vaccination with a state or federal ID.'

LifeSiteNews has produced an extensive COVID-19 vaccines resources page. View it here.

SAN RAFAEL, California, June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — A California congressman is hosting an in-person town hall tomorrow that is limited to 100 vaccinated participants.

The unvaccinated are relegated to participating online.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) explained in an email invitation, “In accordance with Marin County COVID-19 protocols, in-person attendance will be limited to 100 guests. Seating will be socially-distanced and masks are required. Proof of vaccination will be required at the event before entrance for in-person attendance. Guests can also view the town hall on Facebook Live, Marin TV, or KPCA.”

“Priority will be given to constituents of California’s Second District on a first-come, first-served basis,” Huffman’s email invitation said. “Proof of vaccination with a state or federal ID will be required at the time of the event to attend in-person.”

Image
Screenshot of email blast from Huffman promoting the vaccine-segregated event. An online version of the email can be viewed at iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/view_newsletter.aspx?id=102127&c=CA02JH

Huffman is a cosponsor of and voted for the “For the People Act” (H.R. 1), a bill to completely gut state voter ID requirements.

Huffman’s online advertisements of the event, which already has 100 registrants, do not actually specify which vaccines participants must present proof of receiving. Californians are assuming Huffman means participants must show proof of receiving a coronavirus vaccine, particularly given the sentence about proof of vaccine is in the email blast’s paragraph about “Marin County COVID-19 protocols.”

Some constituents are calling the vaccine requirement a violation of California law, a form of discrimination, and “apartheid.”

“It discriminates and coerces,” commented Lisa Longnecker, a participant in the local activist group Marin Standup!, which advocates for medical and religious freedom.

“It promotes segregation and apartheid against people who got a first shot, had a severe reaction and can't get a second shot, people with allergies, disabilities, medical conditions, and religious people” who conscientiously object to taking the vaccine, she said. “Imagine if they said, ‘If you’re black, you can’t come in.’ That's a biological thing. So is an allergy.”

Vaccine safety advocates note that the Americans with Disabilities Act can potentially include as a disability medical contraindications to vaccines, and thus to treat someone differently because of such a condition could be illegal under the ADA and its sister statute the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Fox News’s Tucker Carlson recently ripped vaccine-based segregation on his popular show Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, “pretty much everybody agreed that segregation was the worst thing this country ever did,” Tucker Carlson told his audience on Tuesday night, kicking off a sardonic monologue about vaccination passports and the social penalties for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Forcing certain categories of citizens into separate, lesser accommodations, barring them from public places, treating them like lepers or untouchables: that was completely immoral and wrong,” the Fox News host continued. “We were told that a lot, and most of us strongly agree. It was wrong.

Nevertheless, “the very same people” who have condemned segregation “are now enforcing segregation,” Carlson charged.

“Medical Jim Crow has come to America,” the host said, provocatively citing the laws that enforced racial segregation in parts of the U.S. from the 1870s until 1965. “If we still had water fountains, the unvaccinated would have separate ones.”

Longnecker is calling on fellow concerned citizens to protest the in-person event. The town hall meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 8 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time at San Rafael Community Center (618 B Street, San Rafael, CA 94901). In-person participation requires an RSVP online and “proof of completed vaccination(s) more than two weeks prior.”

Potential attendees are also invited to send questions in advance to [email protected].

The event will be livestreamed on Huffman’s Facebook page.

LifeSiteNews reached out to Huffman’s office for comment, but did not receive a response by press time.

Biden announces July 4 giveaway if 70% of Americans take a COVID vaccine

‘It’s going to take everyone … to get to this 70 percent mark so we can declare independence from COVID-19,’ the president said.

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — President Joe Biden has announced June to be a “month of action” to get “70 percent of American adults vaccinated … so we can declare our independence from COVID-19.”

The president delivered his remarks during a June 3 speech at the White House, promising American citizens “a summer of freedom, a summer of joys, a summer of get-togethers and celebrations,” if only a critical mass of “at least 70 percent of adult Americans [take] at least one shot” before July 4, Independence Day.

“It’s going to take everyone: the federal government, the state governments and local, tribal, and territorial governments, the private sector and, most importantly, the American people to get to this 70 percent mark so we can declare independence from COVID-19,” Biden announced.

“That’s why today we’re announcing a month-long effort to pull out all the stops to free ourselves from this virus,” Biden announced before encouraging “every American over 12 years of age, no matter where you live, what you believe, who you voted for,” that they have “the right to get vaccinated.”

Although touting the liberty Americans have to choose the vaccine freely, the president made clear his preference that citizens use this liberty in a specific way. “It’s your choice. So please, exercise your freedom. Live without fear. We need to be one America, united, free from fear this fall … we especially need people under 40 to step up … so we can declare independence from COVID-19.”

Driving the “wartime effort” is a host of new incentives, designed to encourage those who are currently hesitant about receiving a COVID vaccine to put their fears aside and take the jab.

Parents will be given free childcare in order to facilitate attending a vaccine clinic, in partnership with over 500 YMCAs and Bright Horizons day-care centers.

Additionally, the brewing giant behind Budweiser, Anheuser-Busch, has announced that it “will buy America’s next round of beer, seltzer, non-alcoholic beverage or other A-B product,” providing the free beverages to over 21s if Biden meets the 70 percent quota, CEO Michel Doukeris said.

“At Anheuser-Busch, we are committed to supporting the safe and strong recovery of our nation and being able to be together again at the places and with the people we have missed so much. This commitment includes encouraging Americans to get vaccinated, and we are excited to buy Americans 21+ a round of beer when we reach the White House goal,” he added.

Obtaining the shot is to be made easier and more accessible than it already is, Biden announced. Not only will companies be handed tax credits to give their staff time off to get a jab, but “thousands of pharmacies” across the U.S. are opening for 24 hours on Fridays to give people every opportunity to drop in for a vaccine. CVS, in addition to being open at later hours, is entering vaccine recipients into a prize draw where they can win cash, cruise tickets, and Super Bowl and Major League Baseball tickets, simply for taking at least one COVID vaccine shot during the month of June.

The drive, however, may not be having the desired effect, with the rate of vaccination dropping significantly from its peak in April. According to a report in the Washington Post, April saw as many as 3.2 million people receiving either their first or second jab in a single day, but now that number has slowed precipitously to around 500,000 per day.

Every U.S. state is reportedly down at least two thirds from its peak, with a particularly prominent drop in southern and midwestern states, all of which makes Biden’s July 4 vaccination goal less likely to come to fruition, regardless of the freebies.

Frustrated with slow take-up of the vaccine, state governors, too, have taken to incentivizing COVID vaccines, devising high-value prizes and other giveaways.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine offered citizens in Ohio the chance to be entered into a weekly lottery worth a staggering $1 million after lamenting the roughly 67 percent of Ohioans who hadn’t been fully vaccinated by mid-May.

Prior to DeWine’s announcement, Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) promised “a $100 savings bond to every single one [aged 16 to 35] that steps up and takes the vaccine.” The effort to encourage widespread uptake of the jab is aimed mostly towards the young in West Virginia, a demographic that Justice decried as not taking the shot “as fast as we’d like them to take them … we’ve got to do something about this.”

In like manner, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) offered New Yorkers a free lottery ticket (usually worth $20) with a $5 million jackpot in exchange for presenting themselves for a COVID jab between May 24 and 28. “If you were undecided or dubious about getting a vaccine, now you have an added bonus. Don’t miss this chance,” Cuomo said, according to an ABC News report.

Though the list of incentives offered in states nationwide grows, the FDA clearly stipulates against coercion, stating that each vaccine is “an investigational vaccine not licensed for any indication,” and the agency requires that all “promotional material relating to the COVID-19 Vaccine clearly and conspicuously … state that this product has not been approved or licensed by the FDA, but has been authorized for emergency use by FDA.”

On account of this, federal law states that “to protect public health,” all manufacturers of products authorized for emergency use are required to provide “[a]ppropriate conditions designed to ensure that individuals to whom the product is administered are informed … of the option to accept or refuse administration of the product, of the consequences, if any, of refusing administration of the product, and of the alternatives to the product that are available and of their benefits and risks.”

June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – Deaths and hospitalizations for COVID-19 infection have tripled among the fully vaccinated in the U.S. in the past month.

Deaths from COVID in those who have been fully vaccinated against the disease increased from 160 as of April 30 to 535 as of June 1, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A total of 10,262 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine “breakthrough infections” – defined as coronavirus infections in fully vaccinated people – were reported to the CDC from 46 U.S. states and territories between January 1 and April 30, 2021, according to a report released by the CDC May 28.

About 10% (995) of the patients who became ill after vaccination before April 30 were hospitalized and the agency said it had received reports of 160 fully vaccinated patients dying from the infection.

Just days later the CDC website reported that 3,016 patients fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine had developed a “breakthrough infection” and had been hospitalized or died. “Breakthrough” deaths climbed to 535 as of June 1 compared to 160 reported deaths a month earlier.

Increasing cases of people testing positive for COVID-19 have been reported in the media. Software developer Joel Kallman, 54, died May 25, after reportedly losing a battle against the virus that causes COVID-19, though he had been vaccinated against the disease on March 26.

Last month Comedian Bill Maher tested positive for COVID-19 despite having received two doses of a coronavirus vaccine weeks earlier, as did at least nine New York Yankees players.

CDC no longer counting post-vaccine cases

“Despite the high level of vaccine efficacy, a small percentage of fully vaccinated persons (i.e. received all recommended doses of an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine) will develop symptomatic or asymptomatic infections with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19,” the CDC said in May.

The health oversight agency added that it would only be counting COVID-19 cases and infections after vaccination that resulted in patients being hospitalized or dying from May 1 onward – discounting almost 90% of cases of vaccine failure.

The policy leaves a gaping hole in data collection on vaccine effectiveness. What’s more, since only 27% of the reported cases were asymptomatic, it also leaves a bulk of vaccinated people who are symptomatic – more than 60% of reported cases are actually ill with COVID symptoms – who are perhaps unwittingly spreading the disease because they do not suspect themselves of having a COVID infection because they have received their shots. But the CDC is no longer counting them.

The CDC did not respond to questions about how discounting the majority COVID breakthrough infections might affect analysis of data efficacy.

Given that the CDC definition of “breakthrough infection” is in “fully vaccinated” individuals, the agency is also discounting cases of COVID infection among those who have only received one dose of vaccine in its statistics.

Antibody-dependent enhancement?

It is not clear from the CDC data if the people who have become seriously ill, including those who have died of COVID infection following vaccination, are not experiencing a known side-effect of coronavirus vaccination that was warned about before the rollout began: antibody dependent enhancement, or ADE.

ADE is a response to the wild virus in which vaccinated people (or animals) experience a hyper-immune response which sets off dangerous inflammatory processes of disease – basically, and ironically, creating the worst outcome for the disease among those who have been vaccinated. At least 130 children died in the Philippines in 2017 when an experimental vaccine against Dengue fever resulted in an explosive immune ADE reaction killing the children when they were exposed to wild Dengue virus after vaccination, for example. The fiasco led to government health officers being indicted and the pharmaceutical giant, Sanofi, yanking its vaccine – but not before more than 800,000 children had already been given the shots and left in danger of an ADE response to the circulating virus.

Multiple studies had warned of the repeated failures and dangers of a coronavirus vaccine that created an ADE response when vaccinated individuals encountered a wild virus. Yet there is no evidence that the deaths from COVID-19 in the fully vaccinated have been investigated to determine if they suffered from an ADE response to a wild coronavirus.

Previous COVID infection?

Pennsylvania immunologist Hooman Noorchashm has been warning the CDC and the public for months about another possibility: the danger of being vaccinated while having a COVID infection or having been recently infected.  Having the vaccine react to lurking virus particles from infection could explain the illnesses and deaths of people from COVID post-vaccination.

“[C]ritically, in persons who have had recent infections, vaccination could re-ignite a critical inflammatory disease or blood clotting complications that have proven deadly to some patients,” Dr. Noorchashm warned in a May 30 blogpost.

The immunologist, who has been interviewed on the Tucker Carlson’s show on FOX News and has warned people to undergo antibody testing to make sure they have not been already infected by the virus that causes COVID-19 before they are vaccinated, slammed a recent announcement by the CDC discouraging testing for COVID antibodies.

“The presence of COVID-19 antibodies in unvaccinated persons considering vaccination indicates that they were previously or recently naturally infected. It is almost a certainty that many such persons are already well immune and either do not benefit, or only marginally benefit, from vaccination,” Dr. Noorchashm said. “In the absence of benefit, ANY medical procedure, including vaccines, can only impose harm.”

FDA’s ‘do not test’ policy

In the same month that the CDC announced it would no longer count most vaccine failures, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it is discouraging people from getting tested, before or after vaccination, for immunity.

“[A]ntibody tests should not be used at this time to determine immunity or protection against COVID-19 at any time, and especially after a person has received a COVID-19 vaccination,” the agency said, offering no explanation why it is opposed to testing. The agency has not warned the vaccinated that they may be especially vulnerable to a serious vaccine reaction if they have already had an infection with the virus or that their vaccine may not work.

Immunologist Noorchashm called the FDA announcement “shocking.”

“Why shouldn’t Americans check their blood after vaccination to make sure they’ve mounted a response? It’s shocking!” he wrote about the announcement.  “The COVID-19 vaccines, like any medical product are not perfect — and especially the mRNA vaccines, which we know are more unstable than traditional protein vaccines.”

“As such, out of the millions of doses of these vaccines being administered daily across the world, a fraction, perhaps thousands, can reasonably be expected to be ineffective,” Dr. Noorchashm wrote.

“So, it is entirely conceivable that some individuals who think they are getting vaccinated, are in fact NOT getting an adequate dose of the vaccine and do not become immune. Performing an antibody test post-vaccination could reassure vaccinated Americans that they, in fact, have developed antibody immunity,” he said.

Creator of CDC COVID vaccine app dies two months after taking jab. Company mourns his passing ‘from Covid-19’

Joel Robert Kallman is one of thousands of cases of 'breakthrough' COVID infection – if that is indeed what he died of, and not complications of the vaccine itself – in people who have received a COVID vaccine.

June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – The creator of a COVID-19 vaccine app used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has died two months after taking a COVID vaccine.

Joel Robert Kallman of Delaware, Ohio, died on May 25, after tweeting a message March 26 that he had received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Two days after his death his employer announced that he had “passed away from Covid-19.”

The 54-year-old husband and father, best known in the technology field as the creator and vision behind Oracle APEX, a web-based software development platform, tweeted his last message on March 29, three days after getting the shot.

“I got my first vaccination today,” Kallman tweeted on March 26. “I am incredibly proud of @Oracle and the team that worked tirelessly to create and run v-safe for the USA.”

‘V-safe’ app developer

“V-safe” is a smartphone-based tool developed by Oracle APEX that uses text messaging and web surveys to provide personalized health check-ins after people receive a COVID-19 vaccine. It was adopted by the CDC so that users could inform the agency of side effects after getting a coronavirus vaccine and to remind them to get a second dose of vaccine.

After his tweet announcing having received a COVID vaccine shot, Kallman tweeted five more times in the following three days and then abruptly stopped posting messages altogether after his last post about a tech conference on March 29. He had been in the habit of tweeting at least once daily.

“We're heartbroken to share that Joel Kallman has passed away from Covid-19 on May 25th,” Oracle APEX company tweeted May 27. “Joel's warmth and enthusiasm touched countless across the globe. We miss him dearly.”

No description of Kallman’s condition between his vaccine and his death was provided by his company or his obituary, which asked that donations be given in lieu of flowers to the National Right to Life Committee.

‘Every person has infinite value’

Kallman had raised money for cancer research by annually biking 200 miles in a fundraiser and giving generously to cancer research drives. He was described by employees and friends as “so kind,” an “amazing mentor,” and a person “who helped people feel like they mattered.”

In a video chat to APEX personnel, Kallman had said “the purpose of my life [is] to elevate and serve others.”

“Those who know me personally know that I have an unwavering faith in God. It’s what defines me as a person. And I don’t try to conceal that fact and I attempt to live my faith. And I fail in so many ways every day, miserably, but I still try to live it,” Kallman said. “And it’s with my faith that I view every person as having infinite value. Those among us, those we don’t know – infinite value.”

“You don’t have to do something big or global to have a big impact on someone’s life,” Kallman told his employees.

“Eventually all of us are going to be delivered from this pandemic,” he said. “But there’s going to continue to be countless among us who need our help. It’s endless – the oppressed, the infirm, the mentally ill, the imprisoned, those living in abject poverty. And additionally, there’s going to be a ton of people who’ve been affected by this pandemic. Not only have they lost their jobs, their livelihoods have been wiped out. Gone.”

He told his employees that it was his hope that they would make use of their God-given talents so that they can “have a profound impact on people’s lives.”

A funeral Mass was held for Kallman, who left behind his wife, son, and six siblings, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Columbus, Ohio.

‘Breakthrough COVID’ deaths triple

Kallman’s is one of thousands of cases of “breakthrough” COVID infection – if that is indeed what he died of, and not complications of the vaccine itself – in people who have received a COVID vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that hospitalizations for COVID infection and deaths have more than tripled among those who have been fully vaccinated against the disease in just the past month alone.

Vaccines ‘deadly’ for some

It is not known if Kallman had been previously infected by the coronavirus before his vaccination, or if he received a second dose of vaccine, but Pennsylvania immunologist Hooman Noorchashm has been warning the CDC and the public for months of the dangers of being vaccinated for those who have a hidden or have had a recent COVID-19 infection.

“[C]ritically, in persons who have had recent infections, vaccination could re-ignite a critical inflammatory disease or blood clotting complications that have proven deadly to some patients,” Dr. Noorchashm warned in a May 30 blogpost.

The immunologist, who has been interviewed on the Tucker Carlson’s show on FOX News, has urged people to undergo antibody testing to make sure that they have not already been infected by the virus that causes COVID-19 before they are vaccinated. Noorchashm has slammed a recent announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which discouraged testing for COVID-19 antibodies.

“[A]ntibody tests should not be used at this time to determine immunity or protection against COVID-19 at any time, and especially after a person has received a COVID-19 vaccination,” the FDA said without offering an explanation and without alerting the public to the dangers that Noorchashm and others have raised.

“The presence of COVID-19 antibodies in unvaccinated persons considering vaccination indicates that they were previously or recently naturally infected. It is almost a certainty that many such persons are already well immune and either do not benefit, or only marginally benefit, from vaccination. In the absence of benefit, ANY medical procedure, including vaccines, can only impose harm,” Dr. Noorchashm wrote.

“So why is FDA guiding against their use? It’s shocking!” Dr. Noorchashm wrote, calling the use of blood testing to detect COVID-19 antibodies before and after vaccination an “ethical AND safe medical practice.”

Dems still want Jan. 6 commission with broad powers to investigate conservatives

The commission would have authority to demand donor, owner, shareholder, member, and communication data from every conservative group and individual in the nation. Standing in the way is the Senate filibuster.

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Following the crumbled narrative of an “armed insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, Democrats are not only seeking to double-down, but likely intend to use it as a pretext for the persecution of law-abiding Americans, and the utter destruction of the conservative movement, including their enemies in the Republican party.

On May 19, the Democrat-led U.S. House of Representatives voted to create a special January 6 Commission for investigating the roughly four-hour afternoon riot, providing it with virtually unlimited authority to subpoena even the internal records, communications and donor lists of conservative organizations with full access to any and all data held by any department of the Federal government, including the National Security Agency (NSA), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

The bill elevates this “breach” of the Capital grounds to a “domestic terrorist attack” and authorizes the Commission to investigate the incident itself and “the influencing factors that fomented such [an] attack.” The purview of the investigation, one observer wrote, is thus limited only to “the imagination of the Democrat appointees,” as “influencing factors” may include any and all individuals and organizations who happened to be skeptical that Joe Biden was actually duly elected and had the temerity to communicate those ideas to others.

Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA) released a statement opposing the bill charging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) with refusing to “negotiate in good faith on basic parameters that would govern a commission.” He also pointed out investigations are being conducted by two bi-partisan Senate committees, the Office of Architect of the Capitol, and, of course, law enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Department of Justice which had made at least 445 arrests with many more to follow.

This initiative by the Democrats in the House, he said, also “ignores the political violence that has struck American cities [in 2020].”

As Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) explained in a recent speech on the floor of the House, left-wing Antifa and Black Lives Matter (BLM) “domestic terrorists … did a horrific and jaw-dropping amount of damage to cities across America during 2020,” including 2,385 looting incidences, 624 arsons, 97 burned police vehicles, over 2,000 injured police officers, a death toll of 25 Americans, and a bill of $2 billion.

“Despite all of this damage, there is no investigation into [this] domestic terrorism from Congress,” she chided. “We have no commission launched to investigate the funding of Antifa. There’s no investigation into the funding of BLM.”

Yet, by contrast, in providing a purview of authority so broad, the proposed January 6 Commission would be able to legally demand such information from any and all conservative organizations. The Reactionary published an analysis in March demonstrating the Democratic Party’s past and future “roadmap” of “investigative abuse to further [its] political goals,” including the inflicting of maximum political damage on their enemies. Examples included lies regarding Donald Trump Jr.’s communications with Wikileaks, the Carter Page FISA applications, and the alleged “collusion” between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Having recalled the tactics of the Democrats, the anonymous attorney author of the analysis highlights one recent example of the types of subpoenas which may be issued by this January 6 Commission in relation to not only any politician, but any organization, corporation, or individual they wish to target.

In early February, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), serving as Chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, wrote a letter to the Chief Operating Officer of the social media platform Parler and accused the company of “facilitating Russia’s campaign to sow chaos in the American electorate.”

Maloney bragged about her having introduced legislation that would require corporate entities being investigated in relation to “the assault on the Capitol on January 6” to be forthcoming with all sorts of internal information lest individuals “be allowed to hide behind the veil of anonymity provided by shell companies.”

Though lacking subpoena power, the committee was nonetheless undeterred from requesting Parler provide comprehensive documents including lists of all individuals who have “direct or indirect ownership interests in Parler” along with a “shareholder register,” a “list of all individuals and entities who have or had any control over Parler,” a full report on their creditors including amounts owed, and more.

The author, under the pen name “Techno Fog,” goes on to warn, that with the subpoena power of the January 6 Commission, requests like this will become binding demands and will go well beyond Parler, certainly impacting other platforms like Gab, and even possibly requiring the identification of anonymous individuals on these platforms.

“Next will be the investigations of conservative political groups and those who exercised their First Amendment right (whether correct or not, it’s still protected speech) to speak out about the 2020 election. There will be efforts to obtain documents concerning leadership and internal communications, as well as donor lists,” he writes.

“Techno Fog” provides one example of how in 2014 the office of California Attorney General Kamala Harris demanded donor lists from conservative nonprofits to “chill” their free speech.

Individuals and their personal communications will also be vulnerable, beginning with President Trump and his staff. “Anyone who disputed the election results or questioned the fairness of the election will be fair game” as well, he writes.

“If you question the seriousness of the game they’re playing,” he writes, “just look at the security around the Capitol. Currently, over 5,000 National Guard troops, along with fencing and razor wire, protect against a non-existent threat.” Like exaggerated media claims about that day, the military at the Capitol “is theater to make January 6 more than what it was to justify what is to come.”

At the end of May, the attempt to establish the commission failed in the Senate with Republicans exercising their filibuster option. “The final vote Friday was 54-35, but Republicans withheld the votes necessary to bring the bill up for debate,” NPR reported. “Just six GOP senators joined with the Democrats, leaving the measure short of the 60 votes needed to proceed.”

Yet pressure is ramping up on Democrats in the Senate to remove the filibuster. On Thursday, a coalition of more than 100 leftist organizations issued a letter calling on the Democrats to overturn the rule. With the GOP senators blocking the bill on the Jan. 6 Commission, “it is clearer than ever that the filibuster needs to be eliminated,” they wrote.

In order to overturn the rule, Democrats will need their full caucus of 50 to hand the tie-breaking vote to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Standing in the way, however, are two Democrat senators who have been explicitly opposed to changing the filibuster rule: Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Joe Manchin (D-WV). The latter said in April, “There is no circumstance in which I will vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster.”

Commenting on these dynamics, former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan writes, “As for Manchin, he is sitting in the catbird seat in the Democratic Party … [If he] holds his ground this June, he will prevail, the filibuster will survive,” the Democrat agenda, including the January 6 Commission, “will die a deserved death, and Joe will become legend in West Virginia.”

Pfizer vaccine ‘probably’ linked to heart inflammation, Israeli panel of experts concludes

Israeli health officials said Tuesday there is a likelihood of a connection between receiving a second dose of the Pfizer COVID vaccine and the onset of myocarditis in young men aged 16-30.

June 7, 2021 (Children's Health Defense) – Israeli health officials found a probable link between the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID vaccine — which the country has relied on almost exclusively in its vaccination drive — and dozens of cases of heart inflammation in young men following the second dose, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

After the ministry received reports of heart inflammation, including myocarditis, following recent COVID vaccination, a panel of experts was appointed to investigate the issue. The panel included public health experts specializing in epidemiology, members of the National Center for Disease Control and academics from the Tel Aviv University, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Haifa University.

Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle that can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and death. According to researchers at the National Organization for Rare Disorders, myocarditis can result from infections, but “more commonly the myocarditis is a result of the body’s immune reaction to the initial heart damage.”

According to a study by Israeli health officials, there were 275 cases of myocarditis identified between December 2020 and May 2021, including 148 cases that occurred within a month after vaccination. Of those 148 cases, 27 occurred after the first dose and 121 after the second dose. About half of the cases involved people with previous medical conditions, Bloomberg reported.

Many of the cases were reported among men 16 to 30, and most often in 16- to 19-year-olds. Most of the patients were discharged from the hospital in less than four days, and 95% of the cases were considered mild.

“There is a likelihood of a connection between receiving a second dose of vaccine and the onset of myocarditis in young men aged 16-30,” the group of experts concluded. “The connection is stronger in young people aged 16-19 compared to other ages and it decreases as age increases.”

The new analysis “is very suggestive of a causal nature” between the vaccine and myocarditis, said Dror Mevorach, head of internal medicine at the Hadassah University Medical Center who was tasked with leading the panel. “I am convinced there is a relationship.”

“It does suggest that this is, at least statistically, a real phenomenon,” said Peter Liu, a cardiologist and chief scientific officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Douglas Diekema, a pediatrician and bioethicist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, said it’s important to investigate “even a hint of a signal.” However he cautioned that “while this report is suggestive … it requires validation in other populations by other investigators before we can be certain the link exists.”

In a statement, Pfizer said there is still no indication the cases are due to its vaccine. Myocarditis is often caused by viral infections, and COVID infections have been reported to cause the condition, the drugmaker said.

Pfizer’s partner, BioNTech, said more than 300 million doses of the COVID vaccine have been administered globally and the “benefit-risk profile” of the vaccine remains positive.

“A careful assessment of the reports is ongoing and it has not been concluded,” the company said. “Adverse events, including myocarditis and pericarditis, are being regularly and thoroughly reviewed by the companies as well as by regulatory authorities.”

The Israeli panel’s findings come as Israel and many European countries debate whether younger adolescents should be vaccinated against COVID. A decision to include the 12 to 15 age group in the country’s vaccination program has not yet been made.

According to the Health Ministry, a recommendation regarding the vaccination for children ages 12-15 will soon be formulated by the epidemiological team and will be communicated to the ministry’s director general.

Other countries, including the U.S. and Canada, began vaccinating children 12 and older in May. As The Defender reported, a group of more than 40 UK doctors last month in an open letter told Britain’s drug regulation agency that vaccinating children for COVID is “irresponsible, unethical and unnecessary.”

The preliminary findings of the Israeli panel studying a possible link between the vaccine and myocarditis were first leaked by Channel 12 at the end of April. Channel 12 mentioned two cases of people succumbing to the disease, but said there was no certainty as to the link between these cases and the vaccine.

As The Defender reported May 10, EU regulators called on Pfizer and Moderna to provide additional data related to the companies’ COVID vaccines and a potential link to heart inflammation after the agency completed a safety review of all four COVID vaccines authorized for emergency use in the EU.

In a report issued May 7, the European Medicines Agency’s safety committee, (PRAC), disclosed its members were aware of cases of myocarditis and pericarditis following Pfizer vaccination.

Regulators said they didn’t see an indication the vaccine caused these cases. But as a prevention, PRAC requested Pfizer provide further data, including an analysis of events according to age and gender, in its next pandemic summary safety report before regulators could determine if any other regulatory action is needed.

On May 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it was investigating reports that some teenagers and young adults vaccinated against COVID may have experienced heart problems.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in a May 17 statement said reports of myocarditis to date seemed to occur predominantly in adolescents and young adults, more often in males than females, more often following the second dose and typically within four days after vaccination. Most cases appeared to be “mild” and follow-up is ongoing.

On April 27, Reuters reported the U.S. Department of Defense was investigating 14 cases of heart inflammation among people who were vaccinated through the military’s health services.

A search in the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) revealed 419 cases of pericarditis and myocarditis reported between Dec. 14, 2020 and May 21, 2021 in the U.S following COVID vaccination. Of the 419 cases reported, 247 cases were attributed to Pfizer, 151 cases to Moderna and 20 cases to Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine.

Pastors belong at the foot of the Cross, but Bishop Robert Barron is serenading boomers

St. John has always been my model for what Church leaders should look like. Whatever their personal weaknesses, they must not flee the cross. But one thing Bishop Barron isn’t, is a reflection of John as apostle.

June 7, 2021 (The Stream) – In a suffering world, where should Christians stand? Especially where should pastors stand, those men who dare to speak on Jesus’ behalf, to “feed” His sheep? I think the answer is clear from the example of their Master. Jesus shed the glory of heaven to find the most vulnerable, the suffering, those estranged from God who deemed themselves unworthy even of mercy. He suffered with them and for them. He calls on us to take up the cross and follow.

Which of the apostles stood with Jesus on the darkest day in history, Good Friday? Just one, the apostle “He loved,” whose name was John. He was the only man strong enough to stand by the women, especially Jesus’ mother — who never fled Him. As a Catholic, I believe that John was one of the Church’s first 12 bishops. One had already betrayed Christ, while another pretended he’d never met Him. The rest remained in hiding. And Jesus gave His greatest earthly treasure, His beloved mother, into John’s care.

The Apostle John didn’t flee from Caesar, or join him

So John has always been my model for what Church leaders should look like. Whatever their personal weaknesses, they must not flee the cross. However Caesar threatens, they do not bend the knee. Whatever their “prudent” colleagues do, they will not run and hide.

With great sadness I must say that few Christian leaders today live up to this standard. The more power, prestige, and visibility such leaders have, the greater their failure when they flee. That’s why I’ve been bold in my criticisms of the most powerful Christian on earth, Pope Francis. His alliance with Communist China and embrace of pro-choice globalists might be the greatest scandal in Catholic history. Popes appointing their illegitimate children as Renaissance cardinals? That pales by comparison.

The malleable Bishop Barron

In the US, one of the most prominent, well-funded, visible and “connected” bishops is Robert Barron. He’s known and respected on both the theological “right” and the progressive “left.” When Benedict XVI was in office, Barron sounded orthodox. Now that Francis rules, Barron tilts his way. Read theologian John Gravino’s staggering exposé of Barron’s leadership in “mainstreaming” gay clergy in the Catholic church.

He is all things to all popes, it seems.

The least among our brothers … The least of his concerns

One thing Barron isn’t is a reflection of John as apostle. Out of the hundreds of thousands of words that emerge annually from Barron’s personal media empire, I have strained to hear him speak anything prophetic on behalf of the weak, the abandoned, the desperate. This bishop with so much influence, who appears on network TV shows, doesn’t talk much about the unborn. I didn’t hear him defend David Daleiden, when the state of California (where each of them lives) decided to persecute Daleiden for exposing Planned Parenthood. When Barron appeared in a video with Ben Shapiro, who challenged him to evangelize for Christ, Barron demurred. He pretty much shrugged, and said that there were other paths to salvation.

Bad as that is, somehow I am more offended at Barron’s refusal to use his vast personal resources, given by well-meaning donors, on behalf of the persecuted. Since Pope Francis sealed his secret deal with China, Barron has said not a word about China’s concentration camps, forced abortions, and organ theft aimed at Uyghurs — peaceful Muslims hunted by the Communists for their religion. Since the LGBT syndicate launched its attack on religious freedom, Barron has pragmatically dodged any battles on our behalf. Having gained the kind of platform any pastor would envy, Barron has acted more like a courtier in the palace of Caesar, Mammon, and Sodom.

His fellow bishop attacked, and … crickets

What brought this home to me most? This news from China:

Authorities in northern China have arrested a Vatican-appointed Catholic bishop, his seven priests, and an unspecified number of seminarians in what is seen as part of a renewed crackdown on the underground Catholic Church in the communist country.

Police arrested 63-year-old Bishop Joseph Zhang Weizhu of Xinxiang Diocese in Henan province on May 21, a day after they detained the priests and seminarians for allegedly violating the country’s repressive new regulations on religious affairs.

How many times must a man kiss up, before he stops kicking down?

The highly visible Barron’s response to this news? He said nothing about China’s attack on a fellow bishop and his church. But he did find time to mark the birthday of Bob Dylan with a music video.

Now I’ve got nothing against the gifted Bob Dylan. But can you think of a safer, less counter-cultural gesture a pastor could make than to celebrate the Boomers’ favorite songster? I’ve tried, and I can’t.

Dead legacy Catholicism

Bishop Barron is an icon of the legacy Catholic infrastructure that’s collapsing all around him: Bishops as fixers, power-brokers, and pals of the local Democrat pols. Bishops as fund-raisers, builders, and bureaucrats who protect their own above all. (That, along with Freud replacing Augustine in our seminaries, is how we got the sex abuse crisis that still shames us.) The bishops who stay mum while Biden expands the exploitation of aborted babies, but chime in with fashionable tracts on “systemic racism.” The bishops of what has become, in effect, our own Chinese-style, state-run “Patriotic Church.”

In my own flawed, human way, through my apostolate, I’ve always striven to do the opposite. We have sought out the foot of the cross. It took me to Iraqi Kurdistan, just a few miles from ISIS, to chronicle Kurds’ fight for freedom. It took me to Sudan, in the midst of the Darfur genocide. It took me to crisis pregnancy centers, to help them raise millions to serve abandoned mothers and threatened children. It took me to Washington, DC., to speak on behalf of the Uyghurs, whose leaders I count among my closest friends. I don’t know where it will take me next. But I know why I’m going and Whom I follow.

Do bishops like Robert Barron? I pray that they find out soon. Maybe this short film on which I served as co-executive producer might wake them up. It’s all about a pastor who prefers carrying tunes to carrying the Cross.
