Fr. Stephan Ugwu, a Nigerian priest serving the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana, suffered lacerations to his head in an attack by an alleged assailant who said he wanted to ‘kill a black man.’
U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle said that the law was passed for ‘political reasons,’ adding that the ban did not represent a ‘compelling state interest.’
The law comes after Michigan voters approved an amendment to the state constitution enshrining a 'right' to abortion and the repeal of a near-total abortion ban last month.
The statement follows a request from the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democrat Dick Durbin, for Chief Justice John Roberts to testify before the committee Tuesday about the Court’s ethics standards.
