(LifeSiteNews) — When progressive politicians in Canada are in hot water, there is a tried-and-true tactic to trot out: Run against the United States and trot out the “pro-life hidden agenda” trope. British Columbia’s NDP Premier David Eby, who has managed accomplish the singular feat of destroying his province’s economy in just three years, is a perfect case study.
As Eby faces what even the CBC calls a “crisis point” over Indigenous land claims that have thrown BC landowners and the entire real estate market into chaos and uncertainty, Eby took to X on May 7 to assure voters that he will always protect their rights – if the rights they are worried about are not private property but the right to kill a preborn child with pills.
“British Columbians are seeing women’s rights under attack in the U.S. and they are worried about Trump’s copycats here at home,” he wrote. “So let me be clear: Our government is expanding the scope of practice for midwives – including the ability to prescribe mifegymiso, the abortion pill.” Eby did not mention that the “home” many British Columbians are worried about is, in fact, the one they specifically live in.

“Hi, it’s Premier David Eby,” he said in a faux-casual video shot in his office with that wide-eyed look politicians use when they’re about to sell you something. “I’m really happy to see Minister Josie Osborne’s announcement today about expanding what’s called ‘scope of practice’ of midwives in BC. It just means they’re able to more in our province to support people in every part of British Columbia and especially in rural British Columbia.”
“Part of the expansion of scope of practice allows midwives to prescribe mifegymiso, it’s also known as the abortion pill,” he continued. “Access to healthcare means access to full reproductive healthcare for women in British Columbia. We know that the right to choice is under attack in the United States. Here in British Columbia, access to health care means the right to full reproductive choice for women, no matter where you are in the province, and we’re proud of that.”
The only thing worse than the immorality of Eby pushing abortion pills while invoking the fake specter of a looming America is the cynicism of it. Surely even pro-abortion British Columbians recognize that there is no concerted move to restrict abortion pills – even though studies have indicated how dangerous they are and a recent analysis indicated an 11% complication rate for those who take them. Eby is doing this for the same reason progressives always do – to distract from his failures.
Now, I very much wish that progressive fearmongering about Canada being on the verge of passing a raft of pro-life laws was actually true, but it isn’t. Eby is pretending that it is true in order to scare liberal Canadians into sticking with him as the economy burns. This was Justin Trudeau’s favorite tactic, and he learned it from Paul Martin and Jean Chretien before him.
Meanwhile, leaders like Eby and Trudeau have created the economic conditions that make abortion more likely. If the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada is to be believed, many women have abortions because they feel trapped. “Many women state they ‘have no real choice’ as they do not have the financial resources to support themselves and a child,” ARCC noted in their 2018 paper “Why Women Have Abortions.”
To sum up: Progressive leaders have done an impressive job of wrecking the Canadian economy while promising more of the same. But for cash-strapped Canadians suffering under the conditions they have created, they offer a consolation prize: That baby you wanted to keep? We can’t give you the support you need, and we want to shut down pro-life crisis pregnancy centers – but we’ll pay for your abortion. How’s that?
They’ll take half your pay check – but at least you get abortion pills. After all, that’s what you voted for.
