(LifeSiteNews) — The Democrats have had a “God problem” for decades. This graph, by researcher Ryan Burge, sums up the problem succinctly:
This is the “God Gap” in one graph.
It’s the idea that Republicans are the party of religious voters, while Democrats have become more secular over time.
In 1988, 4% of Reps and 6% of Dems were atheist/agnostic in belief.
Now, those are numbers are 6% and 23% respectively. pic.twitter.com/iFMXr4AChX

The reason Democrats are concerned about this is because it has become a potent political problem, and one without a ready solution. Enter James Talarico, a former Presbyterian seminarian and the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Texas.
Talarico has attracted a Beto O’Rourke-esque wave of enthusiasm as a sexual revolutionary in clerical garb. He is as pro-abortion as they come and a staunch advocate for the extremist LGBT agenda, but he claims that he is does so not in spite of being Christian but because he is a Christian.

Talarico has trotted out the tired claims that the Bible is silent about abortion and same-sex “marriage,” informed an enthusiastic Joe Rogan that American Christians have lost their way because of their public pro-life convictions and opposition to the LGBT agenda, insisted that there are (at least) six “biological sexes,” and pleaded with Joe Biden to put abortion clinics in every national park.
The Democrats have been delighted. Barack Obama called him “terrific.” Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Bill Maher have praised him. Even David French, who has spent the last decade complaining that evangelicals voted for Donald Trump despite his manifold and manifest character flaws, bizarrely claimed that Talarico “is one of the few openly Christian politicians in the United States who acts like a Christian.”
Thus, it is interesting that even Talarico has decided to back away from aspects of his transgender advocacy – and this after blasphemously claiming that “God is nonbinary.”
On September 9, Talarico told Fox News that he was reversing his previous position on trans-identifying males in female sports – or something like that. “I oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports if it endangers safety or fairness,” he said. “Every sport has to be safe and fair. As a former public school teacher, I care a lot about our student-athletes.”
The devil, of course, is in the details. Sharp-eyed observers might notice that the word “if” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. LGBT activists claim that trans-identifying athletes do not pose a fairness or safety issue, and thus Talarico is doing with rhetoric what he does with Scripture: lying. Indeed, Talarico likely wouldn’t have even gone that far if he wasn’t getting hammered by GOP attack ads on his support for the trans agenda.
In fact, when pressed, Talarico didn’t quite walk back his opposition to a Texas bill that prohibited trans-identifying male players in female sports. “That bill was overly broad,” he said vaguely. “I supported amendments – and you can go back and check, this is public record – I supported an amendment that would have given the power to make these decisions to local communities.” Whatever that means.
In fact, back in 2021, Talarico had claimed that there are at least six genders:

“The bill seems to think there are two (sexes),” Talarico declared. “The one thing I want us to all be aware of is that modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes. In fact, there are six, which honestly, Rep. Hefner, surprised me, too.”
Now, he’s trying to walk that back, as well. “I was being provocative with that statement,” he claimed this month. “I get that. What I was trying to say is that we can’t use human categories to define God, and that’s not controversial theologically. God is so much bigger than every human category. God is bigger than any of our understandings. And it’s important for us to remember that when we’re having these discussions.”
That, obviously, is a lie. Talarico wasn’t being “provocative,” he was claiming that “modern science obviously recognizes” that there are six “biological sexes.” Talarico just recognizes that this is not a politically viable thing to say right now.
