While abortion may be wrong, the state should “quit tryin’ to be Jesus” by making it illegal, said one state lawmaker during a contentious floor debate over legislation to increase legal protections for unborn children.

“I personally do not believe in abortion. Who of us to judge and cast the first rock? Who lives in a glass house?” asked Rep. Clayton Luckie (D-Dayton) on June 28. “We have to quit tryin’ to be Jesus, and I keep sayin’ it time and time again: let him do His job and deal with the people who don’t do the right things.”

Lawmakers were debating a proposed “heartbeat bill” banning abortions, as well as two other pieces of pro-life legislation.

Footage of the remarks appear in a video by Created Equal Films in support of the bill, which would ban abortion on children old enough to have a detectable heartbeat, as soon as 18 days after conception.

Hundreds of pro-lifers gathered in Columbus this week to rally in support of the bill.
