September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day.
Experts in Finland report that the risk of death from suicide within a year after an abortion is more than seven times higher than the risk of suicide within a year after childbirth.
Sometimes the mother sees suicide as the only way of being reunited with her child, and escaping the daily pain that the abortion brings. I deprived my child of life, she thinks, and therefore I don’t deserve my own.
But while abortion ends the life of a child, God’s powerful grace enables the life of that mother to go on. As she regrets striking out at the life of her child, she also realizes that she has no right to strike out at her own life.
Both lives belong only to the Lord.
