Why libertarians should be pro-life

I am morally aligned with Republicans on almost every social issue – pornography, gay marriage, prostitution, etc. – but find I have begun to disagree with the party establishment on the proper role of government when it comes to these things.

Past three years have taken a ‘dramatic toll’ on number of US abortion clinics

This kind of change is incredibly dramatic. What we’ve been seeing since 1982 was a slow decline, but this kind of change … [is] so different from what’s happened in the past. ~ Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager at Guttmacher Institute, commenting on a Huffington Post report  (“Anti-abortion laws take dramatic toll on clinics nationwide”) that “54 abortion providers across 27 states have shut down or ended their abortion services in the past three years,” August 26.) Even pro-aborts appalled at decision not to prosecute for sex-selective abortions

When we wrote yesterday about the waves of opposition to the decision by the (British) Crown Prosecution Service not to prosecute abortionists who were willing to abort female babies, I began by remarking that a “hornet’s nest of outrage” had followed this indefensible [non-]action. (See “Controversy follows decision not to prosecute British abortionists accused of willingness to practice sex-selection abortion.” But that’s proven to be not the half of it. This depiction neglects the fact that the provision of abortion care is also conscience-based [emphasis added]. The persistent failure to recognize abortion provision as ‘conscientious’ has resulted in laws that do not protect caregivers who are compelled by conscience to provide abortion services…” This is a very real reason why I […]

Alimony for egg freezing commodifies children

We have seen egg buying, paying poor women to gestate, eugenic IVF, etc.–and now alimony to pay for egg freezing? That’s the gist of a request in a New Jersey divorce, supported by Sarah Elizabeth Richards in the New York Times. From, “Alimony for Your Eggs:” All of a sudden, fertility has been assigned a value. If the point of a divorce settlement is to take inventory of a couple’s joint life and divide the assets, then that commodity belongs on the negotiating table — alongside vacation time-shares and projected earnings from his and her M.B.A.’s. No! This idea must not be […]
