The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most sacred shrine in the Americas. Millions of pilgrims visit each year to pray before the miraculous image of the Virgin. But behind the walls, a scandal is unfolding that involves allegations of organized crime, money laundering, financial mismanagement, and a rector reinstated through a closed-door decree — without releasing the findings of a Deloitte audit.

Canon Efraín Hernández Díaz was removed after the Basilica’s own Chapter of Canons filed a formal complaint accusing him of financial mismanagement, removal of confidential records, contracts with questionable entities, intimidation, workplace harassment, and alleged links to organized crime. The accusations triggered a canonical investigation and a Deloitte financial audit. Then, without explanation, Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes reinstated him.

The audit results have not been made public. Normal appointment procedures were bypassed. Armed guards have appeared throughout the Basilica, and priests reportedly fear retaliation. The scandal has now spilled from Church circles into Mexican media and political commentary.

The question is no longer merely about one rector. It is about whether one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world has been compromised — and whether the hierarchy will allow the truth to surface before more damage is done.
