Crisis beneath the crisis: When the faithful can't recognize the Pope
Most Viral Moments
See MoreHe believes in the papacy. He believes in previous popes. He accepts the traditional teachings of the Church. But he met Pope Leo, and he walked away. “I can’t sign up to this,” he said. Not because he doubts the faith. Because he doubts the man who claims to lead it.
This is the new crisis of conscience that no seminary training prepared anyone for. A man wants to become Catholic. He believes everything the Church has always taught. But the current pontificate promotes documents that contradict that teaching, blesses what the Church has always called sin, and leaves the faithful wondering who is actually on the Throne of Peter.
The easy answer — “there have always been bad popes” — does not work. Alexander VI was a grotesque sinner, but he never promoted heresy. His Marian writings would be welcome in any traditional parish. The problem with Leo is not personal sin. It is public contradiction of the faith. It is Fiducia Supplicans. It is Amoris Laetitia. It is the systematic undermining of what Catholics have always believed.
