Vatican II cannot be your reason for overhauling everything Catholics once believed. Father David Nix, who converted from liberal to conservative to traditional Catholicism, has seen the whole spectrum. He argues that the Council has become the excuse for every doctrinal innovation, and the evidence is overwhelming.

When liberal Catholics disagree with tradition, their answer is always “Vatican II.” Not St. Thomas Aquinas. Not Pope Gregory the Great. Not St. Vincent of Lerins. A document from the 1960s. Nix asks: If the Council did not create a new religion, why does every departure from tradition rely on it?

The fruits are visible: 50 million Catholics left the Church in the Western Hemisphere alone after the Council. The best Catholics, not the worst — became evangelicals, tired of liberation theology and social justice sermons. They wanted to hear why Jesus died for them. They got half the truth by going Protestant. The sexual revolution did not cause this exodus; it affected every denomination equally. The difference was the Council.
