CAMPAIGN LIFE COALITION MOURNS A DECADE OF LAWLESSNESS

January 27, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“CARAL’s breaking out the cake and champagne, but sackcloth and ashes would be more appropriate,” said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition, the political arm of the pro-life movement in Canada. Mr Hughes was referring today to the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League and other pro-abortion leaders celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada Morgentaler decision on January 28th. The ruling, widely viewed as an unprecedented case of Charter-based “judicial activism,” left Canada lawless with regard to abortion.

“Science has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that a unique human being with its own complete genetic code is created at fertilization,” said Mr. Hughes. “It’s shown that the child’s heart is beating at three-and-a-half weeks, before a woman even knows she’s pregnant. The child’s full humanity can be known visually by eyes, ears, fingers, and toes by seven weeks, before most abortions are committed.”

“But the abortion industry has been lying to women for 30 years,” continued Mr. Hughes. “Against all reason, they call the developing child a blob of tissue or a collection of cells. Abortionists may need to subdue their consciences by such evasions and euphemisms, but women have a right to know.” “We call on Prime Minister Chrétien to restore full legal protection of the right to life in Canada immediately,” concluded Mr Hughes. “We also call on Ontario Premier Mike Harris to fulfill his election promise and enact women’s right-to-know legislation. And we call on all legislators to reject the pro-abortion myth about the Canada Health Act requiring Canadians to pay for baby-killing through their taxes.”

AL GORE NEXT US PRESIDENT?

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (LSN) – Many speculators on US President Clinton’s sex scandal have suggested that he may be forced to leave office. In that case US Vice President Al Gore would assume the presidency. But Gore’s aggressively pro-abortion and anti-family stance is just as strong if not stronger than Clinton’s.

Al Gore is one of the world’s foremost proponents of abortion and population control. Last October, Gore called a White House “global-warming” conference where he warned that “overpopulation” was one of the main contributing factors to the environmental threat. The Washington Times reported Gore as saying, “Third World nations are producing too many children too fast… it is time to ignore the controversy over family planning and cut out-of-control population growth…” When asked how to go about this he suggested expanding birth control and abortion programs in developing countries.

Last Thursday, Gore celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision speaking at a luncheon held by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL). In his talk, Gore trumpeted abortion “rights” and suggested that the only solution to reducing abortion would be increased “family planning.” Gore proposed increasing family planning funds by $15 million to $218 million.

In September of last year, Gore told the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force that they have his commitment to work as hard as he can to stop “anti-gay hate crimes” and end workplace “discrimination.” As a further example of his pandering to those who promote homosexuality, in October Gore lauded the controversial show “Ellen,” saying, “when the character Ellen came out, millions of American were forced to look at sexual orientation in a more open light.”

GERMAN RC CHURCH TO END ABORTION CERTIFICATES

MAINZ, Germany, Jan 27 (LSN) – The German Catholic Bishops’ Conference revealed today that Catholic agencies in Germany will stop issuing abortion-counselling certificates. The announcement came in response to a letter from Pope John Paul II. In the five-page letter, the pontiff wrote, “I would like to urgently request that you, dear brothers, find ways so that a certificate of this nature is no longer issued in church advice centers or in centers which are affiliated to the church.” Bishop Karl Lehmann, of Mainz, told reporters “We will meet the pope’s request. In no way will we withdraw from the state counselling system and we will fully use the room we have for manoeuver.”

According to German law, a woman who wants an abortion must discuss her decision first with a counselling service. She then receives a certificate to confirm she has been counselled and can have the abortion afterwards if she wishes. A quarter of Germany’s more than 1,000 abortion counselling clinics are run by the Catholic Church. Around 131,000 abortions were carried out in Germany in 1996.

UN PLANS TO REINTERPRET UNIVERSAL DECLARATION

TOKYO, Jan 27 (LSN) – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, spoke at the UN University in Tokyo today at the “Symposium on Human Rights in the Asia-Pacific Region.” In her address she claimed that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has “acquired through state practice the status of universal law.”

Robinson advised against making a new declaration to fit the varied “complexities” of today including “discrimination on grounds of gender or on the basis of sexual orientation.” Rather, Robinson suggested, “we need to recognize and recommit ourselves to the extent to which these values are implied in” the Declaration. Robinson suggests that the Inter Action Council would “bring fresh insights into the interpretation of the Preamble and Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a living document.”
