UNICEF BY-PASSES CANADIAN PARENTS AND LEGISLATURES

Teams up with Elections Canada to conduct children’s only vote

OTTAWA, July 13 (LSN) – To mark the tenth anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF Canada and Elections Canada have teamed up for “Canada’s first national election for the rights of youth.” The vote to take place in schools on November 19,1999 will have Canadian children under 18 vote from among ten rights “for the right they feel is most important to them.”

The ten rights “candidates” to be voted on will be culled from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and submitted to Elections Canada in September, one month prior to the vote. While the UN Convention has many positive aspects, one very disturbing one is its proposal to prohibit spanking as a form of discipline, which in practice has shown to be a major focus of UN committees dealing with countries which have agreed to the Convention. See https://www.lifesitenews.com/clc/national_news/news_1197.html#Par…

The Convention on the rights of the Child has many other implications which greatly disturb family organization leaders. This vote in the schools appears to be a consciousness-raising exercise to make Canada’s children aware of their supposed rights under the UN Convention to claim personal authority on all moral, educational, religious and many other matters.

The allowance of a UNICEF sponsored program in Catholic, Christian and Orthodox Jewish schools will also bring controversy since UNICEF has become a prominent partner in the abortion, contraception and sterilization programs of the U.N. The resulting withdrawal of a Vatican contribution to the UN’s children’s organization three years ago led to many Catholic schools abandoning the traditional practice of UNICEF fundraising via Halloween boxes.

There are many other serious implications of this UN exercise in Canada which pro-family organizations must address, not the least of which will be the tremendous cost of this so called national vote.

FBI DATABASE ON US PRO-LIFERS DISCOVERED

WASHINGTON, July 13 (LSN) – The Justice Department of US President Clinton and the Federal Bureau of Investigations have allegedly compiled a database on pro-life leaders called VAAPCON. After being tipped off anonymously to the database’s existence, Judicial Watch filed a freedom of information act lawsuit Friday to garner the information from the government.

Larry Klayman, Chairman and General Counsel of Judicial Watch, a US government watchdog, said, “the Clinton Administration has used and continues to use the FBI as a political weapon against its perceived adversaries.” “Now we understand that the Clinton Administration is keeping a FBI database on prominent Americans and other citizens who happen to be active in the pro-life movement and who believe it is wrong to kill unborn children.”

LifeSite has learned that VAAPCON was the name of an 18-month task force called Violence Against Abortion Providers Conspiracy by the US Justice Department which frustrated pro- abortion supporters by finding no evidence of a conspiracy to do violence on the part of pro-lifers.

STEM CELL RESEARCH QUANDRY SOLUTIONS

WASHINGTON, July 13 (LSN) – In anticipation of an upcoming political battle over the funding of stem cell research in the United States, a coalition of researchers, pro-lifers, politicians, ethicists and religious leaders have put together a policy paper cutting through the ethical dilemma proposed by the research. The release by The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity released July 1, 1999 is of great value since it points out where research in this area is ethically acceptable and where it is not.

The statement gives expert analysis noting that “human stem cell research requiring the destruction of human embryos is objectionable on legal, ethical, and scientific grounds.” However, the paper also points out that “destruction of human embryonic life is unnecessary for medical progress, as alternative methods of obtaining human stem cells and of repairing and regenerating human tissue exist and continue to be developed.”

Signed by Judie Brown, President of American Life League; Dr. Higel M. de S. Cameron, chairman of the Advisory Board for The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity in Bannockburn, Illinois; Richard Doerflinger, Associate Director for Policy Development at the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, National Conference of Catholic Bishops; Dr. Edmund Pellegrino is the John Carroll Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Georgetown University and many other notables, the paper could serve as a great boon to other nations struggling with similar issues.

BEARING DISABLED BABIES TO BE SINFUL

Britain To Screen All Babies For Down’s Syndrome

LONDON, July 13 (LSN) – Bob Edwards, one of a pair of scientists responsible for the birth of the first test tube baby – Louise Brown – said at a recent conference on fertility that “soon it will be a sin of parents to have a child that carries the heavy burden of genetic disease.” The Sunday Times reported July 4th that the conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology is taking place in France while in England, doctors are about to present a report to parliament outlining a programme to test all babies to be screened in utero for Down’s syndrome.

A firm advocate of eugenics, Edwards unabashedly said, “we are entering a world where we have to consider the quality of our children.” Some Down’s Syndrome support groups in England are protesting the screening the primary purpose of which is to offer the option of abortion to parents.
