HAMILTON, ON, Feb 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Americans are shocked to have found out that their former President Bill Clinton will be speaking at a fundraiser for a Catholic hospital in Canada on May 2. An article in the National Review today asks, “What exactly is a president who vetoed a ban on partial-birth abortion doing as a headliner at a Catholic hospital?” The article concludes that “although St. Joseph’s Hospital and its sponsors say they welcome the attention, the local Catholic ordinary might consider taking a page from one southern neighbor – James C. Timlin, the bishop of Scranton, Pennsylvania, who rescinded a Catholic hospital’s invitation to then-vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore to speak at a Catholic hospital about the economy and health care. In June Bishop Timlin said that “the Mercy Hospital has decided not to give Vice President Gore a platform, lest there be any misunderstanding about the hospital’s Catholic identity and its commitment to the sanctity of life.”

Known as the partial-birth abortion President due to having twice vetoed bills banning the infanticidal procedure, Bill Clinton’s record on life issues should automatically disqualify him from any association with a Catholic function prior to his conversion on the issue. At least that is the view of leading Catholics and Evangelicals south of the border.

The National Right to Life Committee’s fact sheet on President Clinton’s Record on Abortion notes that:
  – President Clinton urged the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v. Wade.
  – The Clinton Administration endorsed the so-called Freedom of Choice Act,” a bill that would have prohibited virtually any state restriction on abortion.
  – The Clinton Administration urged Congress to make abortion part of a mandatory national health insurance “benefits package,” forcing all taxpayers to pay for virtually all abortion.
  – President Clinton ordered US military facilities to provide abortions.
  – President Clinton ordered federally funded family planning clinics to counsel and refer for abortion.
  – The Clinton Administration ordered federal funding of experiments using tissue from aborted babies.
  – President Clinton ordered his appointees to facilitate the introduction of RU-486 in the US.
  – President Clinton ordered a resumption of funding to the pro-abortion UNFPA, which participates in the management of China’s forced abortion policy.
  – President Clinton restored US funding to pro-abortion organizations.
  – The Clinton Administration declared abortion to be a “fundamental right of all women,” and ordered US ambassadors to lobby foreign governments in support of abortion.

Focus on the Family President Dr. James Dobson devoted his February 2001 newsletter to the destructive nature of the Clinton presidency especially in terms of the former President’s attacks on life and family. “No man has ever done more to debase the presidency or to undermine our Constitution – and particularly the moral and biblical principles upon which it is based – than has William Jefferson Clinton,” he wrote. On abortion Dobson writes, “Clinton’s hands are stained with the blood of countless innocent babies. By twice vetoing a bill that would have banned partial-birth abortion, he almost single-handedly preserved a barbaric procedure by which fully viable and un-anaesthetized infants, each fresh from the Creator’s hand and brimming with life, were murdered during the final moments of delivery.”

Dobson provides a lengthy, detailed history of Clinton’s sordid record on issues of life, family and morality that should cause anyone with a conscience who has invited the ex-president to speak at a function to blush from embarrassment.

The July 30, 1999 Conservative News reported that the Clinton “administration ….has done far more than any previous one to advance homosexual rights. Clinton sought and received the support of homosexuals in both presidential election campaigns”.
