Homosexual Channel Calls for Boycott of Shaw

OTTAWA, September 26, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Canadian government’s broadcast regulator has insisted that cable and satellite companies include a homosexual channel in their regular digital lineup. Shaw Cable, which owns Star Choice, one of Canada’s two satellite companies, presented arguments to the CRTC yesterday defending its position requiring customers to opt in without extra cost to the homosexual channel.

The National Post reports that Shaw argued that since PrideVision airs erotica, it would be irresponsible to provide the service to households without their permission. Denis Carmel, a spokesman for the CRTC in Ottawa, told the Post he is expecting a rebuttal from PrideVision as early as this week, after which the matter will be placed before the commission for a decision.

A LifeSite reader who subscribes to the Canadian satellite service Bell Expressvu, called LifeSite last week to report that, while looking through the new channels in the early afternoon on a weekday, she was alarmed to find PrideVision showing full frontal nudity. The program was depicting an interview with two men ostensibly from a nudist camp. The mother of teenage children was relieved that she, and not her children, came across the offensive material. When she called Expressvu to complain she was told she could block reception of the channel by programming her receiver.

PrideVision has launched a boycott against Shaw’s Star Choice.
