AMSTERDAM, September 10, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Dutch Women on Waves’ floating abortuary is expected to return home after failing in its bid to enter Portuguese waters. The pro-abortion activist group’s aim was to commit abortions on expectant mothers at sea, in international waters.  Abortionist Rebecca Gomperts, director of Women on Waves, said the crew was tired. “They have spent a lot of time on the high seas,” an Expatica News report said.

But the real purpose of the trip, according to some pro-life analysts, is to ignite controversy and debate over the illegality of abortion in countries where the right of unborn children to continue living is still protected. Gompert appears to have had some success in this respect—a pro-abortion message was aired on Portuguese television with instructions for expectant mothers on how to induce an abortion using medications readily available in pharmacies.  The information was also made available via their web-site. Gomperts claims that Misoprostol is a safe method for women to self-induce an abortion. “The World Health Organization has written a report about the safety of this abortion method, and the abortion pill is used safely in many other countries around the world,” their web-site claims. Yet reports world-wide of deaths, infertility and other effects are mounting, and these when the drug is administered by physicians.  Gomperts also claims that the expulsion of the killed baby happens naturally following taking the drug.

Pro-life groups in Portugal have launched legal action against the group. One pro-life group, Motherhood and Life, has requested a police investigation.  Read related LifeSiteNews.com coverage:  Portuguese Court backs Government Decision Banning Abortion Boat https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2004/sep/04090708.html   tv
