WICHITA, Kansas, August 3, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Operation Rescue, the pro-life group long dedicated to ending the sordid business of George Tiller, has announced a campaign to prevent another late-term abortionist from picking up where Tiller left off.

Operation Rescue has teamed up with two Nebraska pro-life groups, Rescue the Heartland and Nebraskans United for Life, in the “Keep it Closed” campaign to stop abortionist LeRoy Carhart from opening a late-term abortion mill in the area to replace Tiller, who was shot and killed in May.

Carhart, who often filled in at Tiller's Wichita abortion clinic, in an interview with the Associated Press following Tiller's death promised that “there will be a place in Kansas for the later second- and the medically indicated third-trimester patients very soon.”

“We are dedicated to working through every legal means to stop LeRoy Carhart from following through on his threats to open a late-term abortion clinic to replace Tiller's clinic,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

Last month, a coalition of pro-life groups asked Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning to open an investigation into Carhart's abortion business.

The groups point to the troubling circumstances surrounding the 2005 death of 19-year-old Christin Gilbert after a botched abortion by Carhart.  In addition, say the groups, Carhart's poorly-kept Bellevue clinic is a potential health hazard, and records on file with the Nebraska Department of Heath reveal a pattern of sub-standard medical practice at Carhart's business.

The “Keep it Closed” campaign will rally in Omaha, and Carhart's abortion mill on August 28-29 in an effort to “encourage and train pro-lifers who are working … to stop Carhart from becoming the next George Tiller.”

“Carhart's days in Nebraska could be numbered,” said Newman.  “We'll do everything we can to peacefully and legally shut him down.”
