WICHITA, Kansas, Aug. 17, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Only days after Operation Rescue launched a campaign to ensure that late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart does not resume George Tiller's Kansas abortion business, a Wichita, Kansas hospital acknowledged that they would not grant Carhart a transfer agreement.

Operation Rescue president Troy Newman explained that, to establish a late-term abortion clinic in Wichita, Carhart would need to be in the good graces of a local hospital.

But on Friday, Wesley Medical Center issued a statement assuring the public that late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart will not be granted a transfer agreement should he apply for one.

“Physicians do not conduct elective abortions at Wesley Medical Center,” said the hospital in its written statement.  “Wesley treats over 70,000 people yearly in our ED. Our Women's hospital assists in delivering over 6,000 babies every year. We are proud of our role in supporting life.”

“We are very pleased that Wesley Medical Center has taken the position of protecting life, and thank them for working with us toward establishing a community that respects and welcomes life,” said Troy Newman in response to the statement.  “We also are grateful to the hundreds upon hundreds of people who took the time to sign the petition to Wesley Medical Center. Today, your voices were heard.”

The petition was launched as part of the “Keep it Closed” Campaign, aimed at keeping Carhart from opening a Wichita clinic to replace Tiller.  Following the shooting death of fellow abortionist George Tiller in May, Carhart, who currently practices in Bellevue, Neb., told the Associated Press that “there will be a place in Kansas for the later second- and the medically indicated third-trimester patients very soon.”

The pro-life group reported Monday that Carhart's Bellevue abortuary was undergoing external restorations in the days leading up to Operation Rescue's educational rally at the same clinic August 29.

Newman ridiculed the move as “putting lipstick on a pig.”

“Carhart can paint that dump all he wants, but that just putting lipstick on a pig,” he said. “A coat of paint isn't going to stop women from being injured and hospitalized after Carhart gets his hands on them, as we saw over and over again in Kansas.”

The group published a video taken by the pro-lifer documenting the restoration efforts, which shows the extremely abusive behavior and threats of the clinic's hired help – a self-proclaimed “satanist.” (WARNING: extremely graphic language.)

Operation Rescue has also petitioned Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning to launch an investigation into Carhart's existing business, pointing to the death of at least one woman under Carhart's care as well as the sub-standard conditions of his establishment.  While declining to comment on whether an investigation had been opened, Bruning's office sent a statement to LifeSiteNews.com that read: “We are sickened by the actions of Dr. Carhart and intend to prosecute any violations of Nebraska law.”

“Carhart has to face the reality that the vast majority of Americans oppose his late-term abortion business,” said Newman. “No one wants him operating in their community. We are going to continue to work through peaceful, legal means to block his plans to continue late-term abortions, which present an unacceptable risk to the public – especially when done by him.”
