White Ribbon against Pornography Awareness Week – October 31 to November 7

November 2, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – This week marks the 22nd annual White Ribbon Against Pornography (WRAP) Week, which runs Sunday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 7. WRAP Week is intended to inform the public and public officials about the harms of pornography and the need to enforce existing obscenity and related laws.
Robert Peters, President of Morality in Media (MIM), a non-profit U.S. organization working to stop the traffic in pornography constitutionally and organizer of the WRAP campaign, urged “every American concerned about the floodtide of pornography pouring into our nation’s communities, homes, and children’s minds to participate in this year’s White Ribbon Against Pornography (WRAP) Week, and whenever possible to take action against pornography throughout the year.”
Participators are encouraged wear a white ribbon and to spread the message against porn by writing letters to the editor of local papers, or making complaints to local businesses, such as video and magazine outlets, that support or promote pornography. Other suggested activities are asking religious leaders to take a stand in the pulpit against pornography, demanding that federal, state, and municipal politicians enforce existing obscenity laws, and asking Governors, State Legislatures, Mayors, or City Councils to issue a proclamation recognizing the White Ribbon Against Pornography Week campaign.
The State of Tennessee, through the work of Rep. Susan Lynn of the 57th House District, and the State of Tennessee House of Representatives, proclaimed the state’s endorsement of WRAP week.
An excerpt from the Tennessee Proclamation states, “We recognize October 31 through November 7, 2010, as White Ribbon Against Pornography Week in Tennessee and encourage all citizens to wear or display white ribbons as a sign of their commitment to community standards of decency and their support for enforcement of laws against obscene materials.”
Donna Rice Hughes, president of Enough Is Enough (EIE), a U.S. advocacy group working to protect children and families from Internet pornography, online sexual predators, and cyberbullies, said that the White Ribbon Against Pornography campaign is an important reminder that “teens, kids and even young children are scarred by their access to Internet pornography, pornography that is often filled with violence against women, group sex, excretory functions and a myriad of other deviant behavior.”
“This week it is important to remember what we can do to fight pornography’s assault against our children and families,” Hughes said in a press release.
“Consider displaying a white ribbon to raise awareness to those around you about this battle; call or write your members of Congress and challenge them and the Department of Justice to ensure that our current obscenity laws are aggressively enforced and our child pornography enforcement efforts are well funded.”
Hughes points out that parents can avail themselves of the group’s widely acclaimed “Internet Safety 101” program, which educates and equips parents, educators and other caring adults with the knowledge and resources needed to effectively protect children from online pornography and other Internet dangers, as well as how to keep kids safe on social networking sites, gaming and mobile devices.
“We give parents basic, non-technical and technical safety measures to help parents dialogue with their kids about dangers like pornography and protect innocent eyes by using filtering technology and other parental controls. Our children’s innocence is worth fighting for,” Hughes said.
