November 4, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – A LifeSiteNews petition has gone viral in support of a female athlete who must run races against boys who identify as “girls” because of state requirements in Connecticut.
Since its launch two weeks ago, more than 117,000 signatures have been added to the petition in support of a complaint filed by Selina Soule with the U.S. Department of Education. Selina is a high school senior from Glastonbury, Connecticut, who lodged a complaint with the federal government along with two other female athletes, who remain unnamed because of their fear of retaliation. The complaint alleges that the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) discriminated against biological girls and violated their title IX rights.
The Office of Civil Rights of the Department of Education will investigate the girls’ claim that CIAC requires female athletes to compete against biological males in school athletics. While Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 was intended to ensure that girls and boys would have the same access to school sports, it did not contemplate the onset of transgender ideology and that biological boys would want to compete against biological girls. The language in Title IX does not mention “gender identity,” in which discrimination could be alleged.
In 20 states, including Connecticut, girls are compelled to face off with biological boys who claim to be “girls.” Soule told Fox News earlier this year that her situation is “very frustrating because I know I have put in — some of my friends and fellow competitors have put in — so much time and effort to take down our times and make ourselves better. But we are not physically able to be competitive against someone who is biologically a male.”
“Girls should never be simply spectators in their own sport; they deserve to compete on a level playing field,” Soule told the MiddletownPress, adding that she is “grateful” that the federal government is going ahead with the probe. Soule said she hopes that “fairness” returns to athletic competition.
Alliance Defending Freedom, a nonprofit law firm that fights for the rights of people of faith, stated on its website that female athletes are being forced to compete against biological males.
“Activists are pushing schools and athletic associations to adopt harmful policies that allow male athletes who identify as girls to compete in high school women’s sports. This isn’t ‘progress.’ And it’s not fair.” ADF went on to state that these policies are depriving girls of college scholarships and athletic opportunities.
Transgenderism has hit college sports, too. In October, the Big Sky Conference named “June” Eastwood as its Female Athlete of the Week after having finished second among 200 cross country runners at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. Eastwood was formerly known as Jonathan, a biological male. The conference did not acknowledge that Eastwood claims to be a woman.
