ROME, Sept 8 (LSN) – According to Zenit news service last week, doctors around the world may no longer need to vow that they will never kill their patients. Zenit reported that, acting on a petition from the British Medical Association, the World Medical Association is planning to replace the 2,300-year-old Hippocratic oath in favour of one which permits abortion and euthanasia. Zenit noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) is also trying to devise a new oath.  The controversial section of the oath reads, “I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give a woman a pessary to produce abortion.”  One suggested revision of the passage by the World Medical Association says, “Where abortion is legally permitted, I promise to perform it legally and ethically.” In seeking to allow for euthanasia another suggestion reads: “prolongation of life is not the only goal of health care.”
