September 23, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) — 40 Days for Life, a pro-life prayer, fasting and vigil campaign that has saved 10,331 babies from abortion since it began in 2007, begins its 17th international coordinated campaign today in 307 communities around the world.

The community-based life-saving offensive, which describes itself as “a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion,” continues until November 1.

In the eight years since it began, 40 Days for Life leaders have reported not only 10,331 babies saved during the twice-yearly campaigns, but 118 abortion workers quitting and 60 abortion facilities closing.

And thousands of mothers, also, have therefore been spared the incalculable harm, trauma and violence of abortion.

To date, 650,000 individual pro-lifers have participated in 40 Days for Life, the stated mission of which is to take a “determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families.”

“The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a focused, 40-day, non-stop, round-the-clock prayer vigil outside a single Planned Parenthood center, or other abortion facility in your community,” states the website.

40 Days for Life’s “community outreach” component, in which the pro-life “message is take proactively to every corner of your community,” includes such means as media outreach, meetings with church pastors of various congregations, and door-to-door “petitions and education drives.”

The campaign pursues its mission “with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion.”

“The most important thing anyone can do to ensure the success of this campaign is pray,” states the website.

“During each campaign, we are calling on people of faith across the nation … and around the world … to fall on their knees before the Lord, asking Him to hear our plea and heal our land. Pray outside an abortion facility. Pray at church. Pray at work. Pray in the car. Pray at home with your family.”

And fasting is also asked for. “The two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God’s will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God’s help.”

The current 40 Days for Life campaign is active in Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, Ghana, Nigeria, Camaroon, South Africa, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Canada, England, New Zealand, Australia, and in 251 locations in the United States.

“With prayerful hearts, we will now be going forward with our next international effort from September 23 to November 1,” states the 40 Days for Life website.

“We don’t know what surprises the Lord has in store in the future … but we’ve certainly seen His hand at work thus far in response to your prayers!”
