FARMINGTON HILLS, Michigan, November 16, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Pregnant mothers low on energy might want to think twice before downing another bottle of 5-Hour Energy.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of 13 deaths in four years associated with the highly caffeinated energy shot, including one instance of miscarriage.

After increasing media scrutiny, Living Essentials, the distributor of 5‐Hour Energy, issued a press release stating that the product is an “effective dietary supplement” when “consumed according to our recommended use guidelines.”

Living Essentials states it is “unaware of any deaths proven to have been caused by the consumption of 5‐Hour Energy.”

The drink has no sugar, no herbal stimulants, and, according to the producers, contains about as much caffeine as a cup of the leading premium coffee. It contains vitamins including B6, B12, B3, and B9.

It also contains what the company calls an “energy blend” of Citicoline, Tyrosine, Phenylalanine, Taurine, Malic Acid, and Glucuronolactone.

“It is important to note that submitting a serious adverse event report to the FDA, according the agency itself, is not construed by FDA as an admission that the dietary supplement was involved, caused or contributed to the adverse event being reported, or that any person included in the report caused or contributed to the event,” the organizations stated.

Living Essentials stated that it takes “very seriously” any reports of “potential adverse event tied to our products.”
