North Dakota could become the first state with a personhood amendment to its constitution, suggests a new poll.

Commissioned by Forum Communications and conducted by the University of North Dakota College of Business and Public Administration, the poll found that 50 percent of the state's likely voters will vote in favor of Measure 1, which would protect all unborn life. One-third of the 505 respondents opposed the ballot question, with one-sixth undecided.

Respondents were asked: “Measure 1 (Q12) Would require the state to recognize and protect the inalienable rights to life of every human being at every stage of development. If the election were held today, would you vote Yes to approve the measure or No to reject the measure?”

Measure 1 was placed on the ballot after legislators approved a resolution. If passed, it would add the following to the North Dakota constitution: “The inalienable right to life of every human being at any stage of human development must be recognized and protected.”

Fifty-five percent of men supported Measure 1, while 45 percent of women backed it. Among age groups, those 18-30 were most likely to back it, with 62 percent in favor. Only residents aged 46 to 65 polled against, with 57 percent opposed.
