NEW YORK, Oct 20 (LSN.ca) – Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia have discovered that they can coax human primitive fat cells to grow into bone cells. The researchers note that fat is easily accessible and there is usually an overabundance of it available. Dr. Louis P. Bucky and colleagues presented their work Tuesday in Los Angeles at a meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Scientists at the meeting noted “In the future, liposuction may provide an abundant source of stem cells that are easily obtained.” If the fat cells can be coaxed to grow into other tissues as well, the finding could also totally eliminate the killing of embryos in order to harvest stem cells from them.
