LONDON, January 30, 2002 (LSN.ca) – An official government report on the number of morning-after pills dispensed by pharmacists, family planning clinics and schools revealed that last year 25,200 British girls from 12-15 years of age received the abortifacient drugs. The number of the pills given to girls under 16 account for 11% of all MAPs dispensed last year.

The news on the “record high” number of children receiving the pills caused child welfare groups to slam the government for their decision last year to allow children access to the drugs on request without parental consent or notification. “We were right. Young girls are misbehaving, knowing that they can take out insurance the morning after to put things right,” said Dr. Phyllis Anderson, director of the group Teen Concern. Jack Scarisbrick of the pro-life group Life added that the “ready availability of [EC] simply encourages sexual activity and will lead to more sexually transmitted diseases and more infertility in later life.”
