OTTAWA, April 5, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The abortifacient morning-after pill, Plan B, is to be available directly from pharmacies for over-the-counter sales throughout Canada by April, the Canadian Medical Association Journal revealed last week. Saskatchewan, BC, and Quebec already have provincial laws allowing non-prescription sales of the chemical abortifacient.
Dr. Will Johnston, President of Canadian Physicians for Life, told LifeSiteNews.com that there are several problems associated with Plan B’s removal from prescription-only status. Firstly, Dr. Johnston warns that eased availability of the morning-after pill, “by removing a consequence of promiscuity, can’t help but add to the problem of the spread of sexually-transmitted disease.”
In addition, there are no studies examining the risks of repeat use of the pill, Dr. Johnston said. “The potential long-term impact of these high hormone doses, especially when used repeatedly, is worrisome and not being adequately addressed,” he warned.
A disturbing report from Thailand in 2002 revealed that women there, unaware of the risks of the abortifacient morning after pill, were taking the pills on a regular basis. Records from local family planning clinics revealed that excessive use of the morning after pill is common and women ignore the maximum recommended monthly dose of four tablets – which is to say two uses.
Lastly, Dr. Johnston pointed out that the morning-after pill is “consistently mislabelled” with the “absurd suggestion” that the pill is a contraceptive because it prevents the implantation of an egg, when in reality, it is preventing the implantation of a newly formed human being – in other words, morning-after pill use constitutes an abortion.
“The common description of the MAP as emergency contraception fails to accurately describe its possible abortifacient action and is misleading the public,” Dr. Johnston said.
