RALEIGH, N.C., August 30, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Retired US Senator Jesse Helms compared the tragedy of abortion to the 9/11 terrorist strikes and to the Holocaust in his memoirs being published this week.

Helms, who acted as a Republican Senator for North Carolina for 30 years, wrote that “I will never be silent about the death of those who cannot speak for themselves,” in his memoir, Here’s Where I Stand, scheduled for release Tuesday, according to an AP report.

Responding to criticism about his comparison of abortion with the Holocaust, Helms wrote, “I reject that criticism because this is indeed another kind of holocaust, by another name. At last count, more than 40 million unborn children have been deliberately, intentionally destroyed,” he added. “What word adequately defines the scope of such slaughter?”

In the 28 years following the travesty of Roe v. Wade, Helms brought forward 27 pro-life bills and amendments. Comparing the September 11 attacks with abortion, Helms emphasized that, although Americans were right to respond “with shock, sadness and a deep and righteous anger” to the deaths of 3,000 of its citizens on that day, “let us not forget that every passing day in our country, more than three thousand innocent Americans are killed” by abortion.

Helms, 83, retired from the Senate after a fifth consecutive six-year term ended in January 2003, citing age and poor health.
