OTTAWA, May 27 (Lifesitenews.com) – Reform MP Jim Pankiw (Saskatoon-Humboldt) introduced a Private Members’ Bill today which calls for a referendum on taxpayer funding of abortion. The referendum would be held at the time of the first federal election following the passage of the bill.

If Canadians indicated that they did not want “medically unnecessary” abortions funded by taxpayers, the bill requires the federal government to amend the Canada Health Act in order to explicitly state its opposition to such funding. The Act would also be amended to penalize provinces which continue to fund abortions by withholding a portion of their federal health transfers.

The specific referendum question that would be asked of Canadians is included in the bill and reads as follows: “Do you agree that section 13 of the Canada Health Act should be amended to provide that full cash contributions shall be paid only to provinces that do not provide funding or hospital facilities or services for medically unnecessary abortions?”
