WASHINGTON, May 2, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News reveals that 78 per cent of Americans believe a female under age 18 should be required by state law to notify at least one parent or guardian before having an abortion. Only 17% of respondents believed a teen girls should not have to notify at least one parent.

On Apr. 27, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act after a 270-157 vote. The bill-sponsored by Florida congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of the Republican Party-seeks punishment for anyone who transports a minor to another state to have an abortion, and is not the minor’s parent or legal guardian.

U.S. president George W. Bush urged the Senate to support the legislation, so that “parents of pregnant minors can provide counsel, guidance and support to their children (and) be involved in these decisions.” 72 per cent of respondents think a female under age 18 should be required by state law to get permission or consent from at least one parent or guardian before having an abortion; 22 percent disagreed.

The survey was conducted on April 25-26 with 900 telephone interviews with American registered voters. The margin of error is 3 per cent.
