CALGARY, Alberta (LifeSiteNews) — Newly released data indicates that the actual number of abortions caused by drug cocktail Mifegymiso is vastly greater than the reported number of chemical abortions carried out in Alberta.

According to statistics obtained by CTV News though an access-to-information request, in 2022 and 2023, Alberta Health reported 4,152 and 5,850 chemical abortions respectively. Notably, these figures far exceed the roughly 3,000 chemical abortions recorded per year in the province by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

“Data from Alberta Health shows the number of Mifegymiso doses dispensed is significantly higher than the total medical abortions reported, with 4,152 doses dispensed in 2022 and 5,850 in 2023,” CTV News reported.

“Medical” is the term used by pro-abortion activists to refer to abortions caused using drugs, also called chemical abortions. The CIHI data had originally found that around 25 percent of the province’s abortions were chemical, or roughly 3,000 abortions, between 2020 and 2022.

According to a CIHI spokesperson who spoke to CTV News, chemical abortions are underreported because there is not a specific physician billing code for chemical abortions, which results in some “ongoing underestimation of total/medical abortion volumes.”

The underreporting of chemical abortions should not be shocking to pro-lifers, as groups like Campaign Life Coalition have repeatedly warned that research suggests the use of drug cocktails like Mifegymiso is far more common than official statistics indicate.

Even with likely underreported figures, CIHI data show, that when including chemical abortions, well over 80,000 unborn babies are killed in the womb nationwide each year.

Mifegymiso, which became available to Canadians in 2017, is now both legal and free in Alberta and other Canadian provinces. The procedure, which involves the use of two drugs, has become a standard method of ending the lives of unborn babies younger than 10-weeks.

During a chemical abortion using Mifegymiso, the pregnant mother first takes a tablet of the drug mifepristone. This drug blocks the mother’s progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain the tiny new life attached to her uterine wall.

Without progesterone, the mother’s pregnancy-sustaining mechanism shuts down. The new life is ended. Some 24-48 hours later, the woman orally ingests a tablet of misoprostol, which initiates powerful uterine contractions that cause the woman to bleed heavily as she expels her dead baby.

While the drugs are touted as the safest and easiest way to kill unborn babies, data has shown that over 100 Canadian women have been severely harmed by the abortion protocol since 2017.

In fact, according to Canada’s adverse reaction online database, one 19-year-old, along with her baby, tragically died after using the deadly pills.
