EDINBURGH, March 14, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Scotland’s Cardinal Keith O’Brien has urged faithful Catholics there to boycott the National Lottery after learning the lottery had issued £3.3 million in proceeds to fund so-called family planning organizations that refer women for abortions. Cardinal O’Brien said Catholics should “think very carefully” before buying a ticket.
The Lottery has financed the Brook Advisory Centres and the FPA (formerly the Family Planning Association. Both organizations offer contraceptive and so-called family planning information, and refer women for abortion.
“I remain concerned at what I believe to be a blatant misuse of funds given in good faith by members of the public who hope to buy a winning lottery ticket but equally want to give to good causes,” Cardinal O’Brien said, as reported by a timesonline.co.uk report. “I would urge anyone concerned with the sexual health of future generations to think very carefully before supporting the national lottery. I am quite staggered at the volume of funds provided to these agencies.”
“I am at a loss to understand the criteria used by the National Lottery when determining whether or not to give such vast sums of money to agencies which have such lamentable track records,” he added. “At the same time, I know of Christian agencies excluded from the funding process because their religious ethos marks them out as noninclusive organisations.”
