HEIDELBERG, March 2, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Education minister, Roman Giertych, told European news reporters that Poland would not back down on plans to oppose abortion and homosexuality as enshrined rights in a future European constitution.
Speaking Friday in Heidelberg, Germany, at an informal meeting of European education ministers, Giertych told reporters that “Europe needs changes.”“Abortion needs to be banned immediately.”
Giertych also took aim at the homosexual propaganda flooding the European cultural scene, calling it the result of “unwise political correctness.”“Homosexual propaganda must also be limited so children will have the correct view of the family.”
Giertych called abortion “a new form of barbarism,” and warned of the impending demise of Christian-based culture in Europe. He said, “A nation which kills its children is a nation without a future. A continent which kills its children will be settled by people who do not kill theirs.”
“If we will not use all our power to strengthen the family, then as a continent there is not a future for us. We will be a continent settled by representatives of the Islamic world who care for the family.” He said.
His comments have produced a howl of protest from German media who compared them to those of Nazi propagandists, but Giertych has said his comments were not criticized in the Council of Ministers and that he was insulted by the Nazi comparison.
Giertych called for a serious discussion of the Christian foundation of morality that sustains Europe.
Roman Giertych is leader of Poland’s Catholic-nationalist League of Polish Families (LPR), one of the leading groups among the so-called Euroskeptics who object to the growing secularization and collectivization taking hold in EU politics. The LPR campaigned against Polish membership in the EU, calling it a “centralised, socialist superstate.”
The Giertych’s Heidelberg comments echoed those of the President Lech Kaczynski earlier this month during a state visit to Ireland. The President’s linking of natural sexual relations in marriage with the birth rate was ridiculed and denounced by Irish politicians as “homophobia.” President Lech Kaczynski said that if the homosexual “…approach to sexual life were to be promoted on a grand scale, the human race would disappear.”
