January 27, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — The Nigerian bishop who serves as Director of Communications for the African Bishops has lauded the restoration of the Mexico City Policy as a step toward “making America great again,” but has urged the Trump administration to see to it that the policy is strictly enforced.
“I think President Donald Trump, by banning government funding of pro-abortion organizations and policies in foreign countries, has restored some humanity to U.S. foreign policy and granted the U.S. a little more legitimacy as a leading democratic civilization,” Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of Oyo, Nigeria, told LifeSiteNews.
“No democracy nor civilization can be authentic if human life, even the least, is sacrificed for the convenience and pleasure of a few, no matter how rich or influential they may be,” he added.
Trump signed an executive order Monday reinstating and expanding the Mexico City Policy, which bars U.S. taxpayer funding to organizations abroad that perform or promote abortions.
President Reagan introduced the policy at a 1984 UN conference in Mexico City.

Since then, Democratic President Bill Clinton rescinded it, Republican President George W. Bush reinstated it, and Democratic President Barack Obama rescinded it again.
Steven Mosher, president of the Population Research Institute, has stated that Trump’s version of the executive order is far more comprehensive than its predecessors.
It bans funding to abortion providers such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International, and it could even be used to cut off the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
It now applies to “global health assistance furnished by all departments or agencies”—i.e., not just USAID family planning programs; and it now covers “involuntary sterilizations” in addition to abortion.
“What a relief for many women who could be unfairly lured into killing their own children and living thereafter a life of remorse and regret. All human life has intrinsic and divine value,” pointed out Bishop Badejo.
“This and similar bans should be well monitored and strictly enforced to redeem America’s image, often seen as a bully seeking to undermine the cultural and religious practices of other lands in order to impose the ideologies of certain groups and interests,” he added.
“If decisions like this is what the President means by ‘making America great again’ then he might just be on his way to doing so.”
Meanwhile, the Dutch government has announced it will launch a global abortion fund to make up for the $600 million foreign pro-abortion groups claim they will lose as a result of the Mexico City Policy.
