TORONTO, November 24, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The illogic of introducing gay men to the bathhouse subculture as a means of stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS has led to the resignation of a Toronto AIDS activist. The Globe and Mail reports today that Richard Churchill, a real estate developer and long time volunteer for AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT), has said that the organization has lost sight of its mandate to help people avoid contracting the disease.
Â
“HIV is a preventable disease and, here, we’re doing things that are not preventing it, but complicating it,” the 44-year-old real estate developer said.
Â
The Committee is implementing a programme that involves organizing tours of Toronto bath houses, issuing decks of 26 “Sex From A-Z”cards promoting various sexual activities and the use of condoms, touted as the beginning and end of AIDS prevention by most activists.
Â
Representatives of ACT said that there was no way to stop HIV transmission entirely and defended the programme.
Â
“We want to impart information and strategies to reduce people’s risk, recognizing that eliminating all HIV transmission may not happen,” said John Maxwell, director of communications for ACT.

In June, LifeSiteNews.com reported that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published a study showing that the death rates among homosexuals closely matched officially reported death rates from AIDS.
Â
Even apart from the AIDS threat, the homosexual community is characterized by severe and disproportionately high rates of drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, violence, suicide and very high rates of sexual promiscuity. The ill-named “gay lifestyle” is known to be one that significantly shortens the life expectancy of many who engage in it.
